It is about Iran, not about America!

There is a silly debate starting about the impact of President Obama on the Iranian election. It is worth noting that President Obama is making no such claims. Here are some examples:

“'Whereas the Bush administration united Iran's disparate political factions against a common threat, Obama's overtures have accentuated the deep divisions and incongruities among Iran's political elites,'' said Karim Sadjadpour, an Iran expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. (from the BBC).

Could there be something to all the talk of an Obama effect, after all? A stealth effect, perhaps?

And in his Cairo address June 4, he accepted responsibility for America’s part in the enmity between the United States and Iran.
“In the middle of the cold war, the United States played a role in the overthrow of a democratically elected Iranian government,” Mr. Obama said — a reference to the 1953 coup in which an Iranian prime minister, under whom Iran had nationalized its oil industry, was overthrown and the now-despised Shah was restored to power. (from The New York Times).

So is there “an Obama effect” in Iran?

Short answer: No

Long answer: No

Why? Because the Clinton Administration made the same overtures. Here and here are links to stories from 2000 in which Madeleine Albright acknowledged the U.S. role in the 1953 coup in Iran. President Obama is saying little different from his last Democratic predecessor.

What has changed is Iran. Back in 2000 Iran was run by a so-called reformist who was running into opposition from the same forces that have recently showed just how dishonest Iran's system is. Today Iranians are on the streets in protest against that act of massive electoral fraud and the regime's violent response.

It is about them. It is not about us.

How could the Obama affect the Iranian elections? THEY ARE A FARCE ANYWAY!!! The Obama could dress in a pink tutu and stand on his toes, it wouldn't make a damn difference. And the Obama bending over and asking the muslim world "Are you in yet?", along with apologizing for America being America hasn't got the results the Obama wished for.

I really feel sorry for those Iranians that want and crave freedom. The world and especially America will do or say nothing, except to say how we deplore the violence there. It's obvious that the Obama isn't going to be the Messi-uh they wanted. I hope I'm wrong, but this little uprising will be crushed and maybe the Obama will get the meeting he wanted after all.

It was no surprise to me. The embarrassing response the Obama had to the invasion of Georgia showed how weak he was. President Bush's GWOT is coming to fruition. The younger generation of Iranians DID take notice that their neighbors Iraq and Afghanistan held relatively fair and free elections. The protests show they want that also. It's too bad we don't have a leader that will take advantage of it. Don't want to piss of the TERRORISTS...

PD, I have heard consistently from Iranian protesters and analysts they do NOT want Obama putting his mouth on this, in any way. They know we're not going to intervene -- no one is -- and there still are possible rifts in the military and clerics to exploit.

As I think HB was saying, 'It's not about us' -- and we damn well shouldn't try to make it about us.

Technically, what's happening in Iran is none of our business.

And really, talk is cheap, unless you're willing to enforce what you say.

AZZenny & Boojum,

Who the hell advocated attacking Iran militarily, because their election process is a farce? NOT ME! BUT, if America isn't going to speak up and promote freedom who is? The U.N.? LOL ROFLMAO

If the Obama doesn't have the balls to stand up for freedom around the world, he shouldn't have RUN FOR THE LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD! Instead the Obama can't prostrate and apologize to the world fast enough. Did you ever see or hear Putin, Medved, Sarkozy, Brown or Jintao APOLOGIZE for the misery they've caused around the world? FUCK, NO!

Don't you get that the Iranian leadership is going to blame America no matter what we do. They don't need an American President chastising them for cracking down on their citizens to call America the GREAT SATAN. If we are going to called the Great Satan it might as well be for something worthwhile, LIKE SPEAKING OUT FOR FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS IN IRAN!

Thank God we had Ronald Reagan was in office when Solidarity was challenging the COMMUNISTS in Poland. Otherwise millions of people would still be under the heel of communism.

The response by the Obama administration has been WEAK and EMBARRASSING. FUCKING PATHETIC!
