Back from Israel

Okay, I’m back from my brief visit to Israel. Sorry I haven’t had time to write much in the last week. The American Jewish Committee scheduled back-to-back meetings from breakfast until dinner every day, and I took a token amount of time off to visit the Dead Sea for the first time with Max Boot and Mario Loyola. I met with Israeli military officers, academics, and journalists from the far-left to the far-right and at every point in between. Now that I’m home and can process everything I’ve learned, I can start writing again. Stay tuned. And thanks for your patience.

Welcome back MJT. Looking forward to your reports from the field.

Off topic question directed at everyone. Many assert that Israeli Arabs are discriminated against:

Hat trip:

Any responses about to what extent this is true? How much does the treatment of Palestinian Jews contribute to the Palestinian/Israeli conflict?

On another note, many believe that some extremist zionists organized attacks against non Palestinian Arab Jews to encourage them to move to Israel. Any response to these allegations?

THANK GOD your back!

Now I can read someone more intelligent than Juan Cole's blog!

...(actually, using "Juan Cole" and "intelligent" in the same sentence is an oxymoron)

MJT,

I hope your trip went well. An issue I am curious about and wonder if you would address: To what extent are Israeli decision-makers and opinion-makers knowledgeable about Arab history and Islam, over millennia? Thanks.

anand,
What do you make of the following story about the coming release, under the Obama administration, of a convicted terrorist, nominally named Khalid Duhham Al-Jawary?

Yes -- Horseshit.

If you want more than that, why don't you look for facts instead of gobbling up and then spewing rumors. Start with actual historical sources about Arab states' attraction to Hitler and adoption of Nazi political theories. Try googling 'Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and Hitler' or 'Syria Nazi' 'Egypt Nazi'

The Lavon Affair is one example of an Israeli terrorist operation in Egypt which lead to the evacuation of the remaining Jewish community:

Thanks for that Eliot:

Another article detailing alleged zionist/Israeli terrorist attacks against non Palestinian Jewish Arabs is: http://www.bintjbeil.com/E/occupation/ameu_iraqjews.html

I look forward to more perspectives regarding this issue. How wide spread were these type of incidents? (I don't doubt that most Israelis and zionists opposed these types of terrorist attacks.)

I also look forward to additional perspectives regarding the treatment of Palestinian Arab Israelis by other Israelis:

MJT, I would be curious about your perspective regarding Arab muslim Israelis related to this recent war.

Posted by: anand Author Profile Page at January 25, 2009 9:57 PM

I'm sure you'll find a way to blame all this on a handful of Jewish extremists and/or Mossad. The Lavon affair was hardly 'an attack against Jews by extremist Jews,' btw. Everytime Israel hiccupped, Arab countries expelled Jews.

"During the 1947 UN debates, Arab leaders threatened the Jews living in their countries with expulsion and violence if partition were to occur."

"On May 16, 1948, New York Times ... reported of a law drafted by the Arab League Political Committee “which was intended to govern the legal status of Jewish residents of Arab League countries. Their bank accounts would be frozen and used to finance resistance to 'Zionist ambitions in Palestine.' Jews believed to be active Zionists would be interned and their assets confiscated.“"

"Following Syrian independence from France in 1946, attacks against Jews and their property increased, culminating in the pogroms of 1947, which left all shops and synagogues in Aleppo in ruins. Thousands of Jews fled the country, approximatly 10,000 to the United States, and another 5,000 to Israel... For the next decades... Jews were stripped of their citizenship, and experienced employment discrimination. They had their assets frozen and property confiscated."

"In 1956, the Egyptian government used the Sinai Campaign as a pretext for expelling almost 25,000 Egyptian Jews and confiscating their property. Approximately 1,000 more Jews were sent to prisons and detention camps. On November 23, 1956, a proclamation signed by the Minister of Religious Affairs, and read aloud in mosques throughout Egypt, declared that “all Jews are Zionists and enemies of the state,“ and promised that they would be soon expelled.

"When Colonel Qaddafi came to power in Libya in 1969, all Jewish property was confiscated and all debts to Jews cancelled. Although emigration was illegal, more than 3,000 Jews succeeded in leaving for Israel."

anand & Eliot - The Lavon affair??

Where are you getting these links? As far as I can tell, you both seem to be fans of Alec Jones' conspiracy theory site, a major source of links like this.

So what are the Freemasons up to lately? Any news on the New World Order?

Posted by: maryatexitzero Author Profile Page at January 26, 2009 6:51 AM

@maryatexitzero,

I appreciate your skepticism but the Lavon Affair is accepted as a bungled covert operation by the Israelis. Lavon was the Israeli Defense Minister at the time.

Lavon Affair, USS Liberty, Mossad, blah blah blah blah blah

So frickin' what? Just more tired, old clubs with which to bash the only homeland of the Jews.

I wish creeps like Anand and Eliot a nice, long and intimate affair with a kidney stone. Maybe that way they will regret having had the temerity to piss up the wrong tree, and long for a day they can just piss.

AZZenny:

Willful ignorance cannot be overcome with salient facts.

In fact, I know of no way it can be reversed, short of first-hand experience.

Perhaps a work-release program in Sderot for Anand the past few years might have opened his eyes (and heart).

Perhaps not.

I no longer care about the likes of Anand, and have resigned myself to the truth in the saying, "In every generation they rise up.....". It ennobles us to remember this, and act to preserve ourselves and our children's future in the face of such engineered hatred.

The treatment of Israeli muslim arabs is an important issue. Israeli muslim arabs serve as a bridge between Israelis and Palestinians from the occupied territories. Recently I have read that the major Israeli political parties tried to ban 3 Arab muslim Israeli political parties (that have 7 our of 120 seats in the current Israeli parliament) from participating in upcoming national Israeli elections. {Is this really happening?}

What is the perspective of Arab muslim Israelis to the current Gaza war?

Asking questions isn't willful ignorance. Many good and decent Palestinians genuinely believe that Palestinian Israelis are mistreated, and that zionist extremists conducted terrorist attacks to encourage Arab Jews to move to Israel. These issues have to be addressed head on.

Posted by: anand Author Profile Page at January 26, 2009 9:56 AM

Anand, your questions are rhetorical devices -- a disingenuous means to convey your own point of view while being able to avoid taking responsibility for it.

Li'l Mamzer is right -- you're a total waste of time.

Posted by: AZZenny Author Profile Page at January 26, 2009 10:48 AM

anand & Eliot - I asked about the "Lavon affair" links because this issue (like the use of the term "Likudnik") is a red flag that indicates that one is dealing with extremists or conspiracy theorists.

Alex Jones uses the Lavon affair to "prove" that "the Israeli government has a history of tricking the United States into attacking their enemies for them."

He then uses the Lavon affair to prove that Israel and Mossad are to blame for every international/political crime on the books, from 9/11 to the murder of JFK.

Asking questions isn't willful ignorance. Many good and decent Palestinians genuinely believe that Palestinian Israelis are mistreated, and that zionist extremists conducted terrorist attacks to encourage Arab Jews to move to Israel

Tens of thousands of Jews were forced to move from Arab lands. More tens of thousands of Arab Christians were also forced to move from Muslim Gaza, the Muslim-dominated West Bank, Egypt, Libya and other nations in the Middle East. Since the Arab/Muslim persecution of these Jews and Christians is well-documented, and is clearly due to prejudice, a long history of Arab/Muslim ethnic cleansing and apartheid Sharia laws, your 'question' is about as valid as anything Alex Jones writes - it's fever-swamp stuff

Posted by: maryatexitzero Author Profile Page at January 26, 2009 11:32 AM

AZZenny is correct -- I can't recall any post by anand which is not disingenuous.
