A Prayer for the Children of Gaza

I am neither religious nor Jewish, but I can’t help but be touched by this Jewish prayer for the children of Gaza published in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz while Israelis are in the midst of a shooting war with a violent fascist regime. If Hamas ever publishes prayers like this one for the children of Israel, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will be over.

Lord who is the creator of all children, hear our prayer this accursed day. God whom we call Blessed, turn your face to these, the children of Gaza, that they may know your blessings, and your shelter, that they may know light and warmth, where there is now only blackness and smoke, and a cold which cuts and clenches the skin.

Almighty who makes exceptions, which we call miracles, make an exception of the children of Gaza. Shield them from us and from their own. Spare them. Heal them. Let them stand in safety. Deliver them from hunger and horror and fury and grief. Deliver them from us, and from their own.

Thanks to the indispensible Jeffrey Goldberg for pointing me to this.

Brings to mind Golda Meir's quote about peace coming when Arabs love their children more than they hate us.

Is there anyone who could read that prayer and not have tears come? The prayer is so typical of Israelis. Persephone, if you read that link, that is the kind of people you meet when you visit Israel.

Michael, as a Christian who has walked where our Savior walked, I could easily live in the Golan Heights. Tell Dan reminds me of my home state of Colorado. Much of the rest of Israel is much like the hill country of Texas. What a remarkable place Israel is. Thank you for your coverage. Take care of yourself.

"If Hamas ever publishes prayers like this one for the children of Israel, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will be over." I disagree. Many Palestinians no doubt pray for all Israel and Palestinian children. Their prayers have not lead to peace. The will of the majority of Palestinians, who I think want peace and friendship with Israel, has not been able to fully stop terrorist extremists (who most Palestinians do not support.)

I see no solution that does not tackle 500,000 Israeli settlers in the West Bank. Some of these settlers live in segregated gated communities, and some of them do not behave ideally with their Palestinian neighbors.

Perhaps the long term solution is for Palestine to offer 500,000 Israeli settlers Palestinian citizenship and to ask them to live in a fully desegregated and integrated Palestinian State that includes almost all of the West Bank and Gaza.
