The View from the North
My colleague Patrick Lasswell and I interviewed on camera Iraqi Kurdish Peshmerga Colonel Salahdin Ahmad Ameen in his office in Suleimaniya, Kurdistan, Northern Iraq.
Colonel Salahdin spoke to us about his experience as an anti-Baathist guerilla fighter during Saddam Hussein’s genocidal Anfal Campaign – when 200,000 people were killed and more than 5,000 villages were destroyed. In one fight he recounts for us, 300 Peshmerga beat an entire Iraqi brigade of slave soldiers in battle and suffered only one casualty.
He also told us about the notorious Abu Ghraib prison – where he was beaten and tortured by the agents of Saddam’s regime – about the Peshmerga’s doctrine of human rights during war time, Henry Kissinger’s betrayal in 1974, why the Kurds have not yet declared independence from Baghdad, and what may happen if the United States withdraws its armed forces from his country.

Live streaming results in a series of herky-jerky shudders...the meaning is incomprehensible. I assume the gentleman is speaking English.
If any of you have any advice on how to dl this so that it's viewable, please post instructions. Or, if it's possible to post in a different way, at a different location, let me know if this has been done.

Anyway, I hope you shoot a lot more video. The use of MotionBox is great too. Hopefully it'll have an annotation function soon so that discreet points in the interview can be referenced. And I bet there are many high level sunni and shia with interesting things to say as well, but, like normal people everywhere, they are not going to stick their neck out anymore than they already do for fear of getting murdered. Perhaps under the right circumstances (face shadowing like MSM does when they interview someone who doesn't want to show his face?) you could interview some regular sunni and shia folk and get their impression of whats going on.

I always consider your interview-based comments from Kurdistan more informative than most other reports.
My problem is that my computer is ntt set up to supply me any audio with visual materials. Therefore, unless I undertake some serious computer heroics, I cannot know what transpired from the interview.
As a matter of fact, not a few of my opinions on the future of Kurdistan and Iraq are posited upon your reportage. Having worked for a domestic United Press International bureau for a while, 45 years ago, I think I know good reporting.
But since you conducted that interview, and because you undoubtedly are reporting it for various print media, could you please post a transcript so people such as me can read it?

I hope someone will take the time to make a transcription of this, or make it available in audio format. I am glad such video is being made available, but there are more than a few of us who lack the fast connection, and (in my experience) video tends to time out before anything longer than a few minutes can complete downloading. The work you are doing is greatly appreciated even by those of us in the 'working poor' category!

You Tube seems to work okay. I can click on it, hit pause, and after a while it loads to my drive. Then I can watch it without interuptions. Maybe You Tube is too bothersome? expensive? I don't know how it works and my son isn't telling. When I get back I'm going to try the click then pause tactic. If it works, never mind. (Thought I was doing that earlier, but didn't get any dl to temp that I could notice.)
Posted by: OregonGuy at April 30, 2007 02:08 PMOne of the advantages of being able to post the interview in video (I would like to think), is simply the labor savings involved. Barring some simple editing and automated transfer and format conversion, the time to publish a video/audio clip today is almost "free" compared to the time it takes to write it up. Sure the various processes consume time in their own right, but they consume computer time, not Michael time. Even a process that take 1 hour to perform overall saves Michael time if he's not the one doing it.
So, in that sense there's value for Michael in being able to publish such content, in that it (ideally) is more efficient for him.
Now, he may well be a blazing typist, so writing this stuff up may not be a burden for (it would be for me -- I'm a lousy typist).
However, I must say, even with lots of bandwidth, as a consumer of such content I don't particularly care for it. I much prefer a transcript. As a reader, I can read the transcript far far more quickly than the audio or video can play. I can skip over the white space, the pauses, the concerned looks, etc.
One primary benefit of text over audio (if not necessarily video) is simply that I can easily control the speed at which I consume the content. I can skim it quickly and get value out of it, or I can go over it slowly, again and again, until I'm content that I've absorbed all that I can out of it. That's effectively impossible with audio.
One can not deny the value of both video and audio, but for me, particularly for shorter content such as interviews like this, text is far far better.
But no matter what I appreciate that Michael is there creating the content, in any format.

I live in central China and when I tried to watch the previous interview where the young shooter was arrested I experienced what the above viewers are talking about.

Motionbox created a better product than You Tube. You Tube breaks my videos and screws up the audio track and makes it out of sync with the video. Also, You Tube has a 10-minute limit on videos, and Motionbox doesn't. So I'm using Motionbox now. Maybe it streams better, too, I don't know.

I really have to strain to understand what he's saying through the accent, or turn it up so loud my cheap speakers get fuzzy. I quit after 5 minutes. Sorry, guys.
The other thing about transcripts -- the uhhs, umms, speaker searching for words, etc. is eliminated, saving abundant time. I mean, this guy is probably worth it, but audio-video of an interview with a face is just not something I will EVER spend 18 minutes watching on my computer -- and I have blazing high speed.

Excellent video. I found it to be 18 minutes well spent. I prefer video to a transcript because there is so much information lost on paper, e.g., the Colonel's eyes clearly communicated his pride in his overmatched men at having faced down an Iraqi brigade.
The video motivated me to try send a donation again, and this time Paypal actually worked (last two times I tried it kept freezing). Keep up the good work.

Thanks for your comments, we're still trying to figure out how to pay our expenses by doing video and your comments help. I agree with Pam about the length, but there was a reason: Michael didn't want to split the video and miss some really important bits.
The two video piece I posted a couple of weeks ago shows a pronounced difference in viewings. The first video has been seen 1,500 times and the second one 900. The second video is more interesting, but many people will never know that because they did not click on it. Kak Salah deserved to be heard in full. I will work on getting a version with better sound soon.

Also, my friends and family who are fans of MJT who live in Dial-up only territory can't view these reports due to ridiculously slow connections, and I know they aren’t alone. I also second the observation that a transcript is easier to absorb and carefully read and reference. Plus, it is far easier to get away with reading than watching video while, ummm, ‘working’. :)

I have had no problems with Paypal, and have used it several times to reinforce MJT.
It occurred to me today that the best use of video probably is NOT for visually static 1:1 interviews. When the video is even half as visually satisfying as your splendid photos, I'll be much more likely to make the effort, but you've got a ways to go there.
