Hello from Iraq

by Michael J. Totten

Me in Iraq Snow 3.jpg

Yep, that’s me in Iraq, in a photo taken earlier today. Obviously I am not in Baghdad. Iraq is big, and diverse. Not all of it is a hot, flat, dusty plain, and not all of it is a war zone.

I’ll have something a bit more substantial shortly.

Mountains and snow....looks good to me. Glad to see you safely there Michael. Stay safe.

Hey......you're not fooling anybody. You're in Switzerland skiing! :)

Good luck, Michael and stay safe.

Have a good trip, dude.

And now we know who to cast as the unstoppable robotic killing machine in the next Terminator flick. C'mon, say it!

I'LL BE BACK!

Some time could you talk about your consulting work? I'm curious, especially since you've been somewhat mysterious about it, and you never know who's reading the blog, and might want to hire you.

Posted by: Eric J at March 14, 2007 11:58 AM

How's the skiing?

Posted by: Andy at March 14, 2007 12:00 PM

Maybe this is a little too picky, but do you smile? I mean, the photo on the top of the page has you staring, almost longingly into the distance. The other photo has you staring right at your w/ almost an amused smirk. This photo has your hands in your pocket, almost slouched w/ an outsiders kindof look. I realize this is totally irrelevant to your articles which are always amazing, but I am stuck in class, and this is what I am really noticing.

P.S. Best of luck w/ your trip, and I will fulfill my promise to donate upon acquiring a summer clerkship.

this is no iraq, it is kurdistan, because there is only desert sand and dust in iraq. the highlands are in kurdistan. everybody is invited to our us and west friendly country kurdistan. peace

Michael, stay safe. Don't take any risks.

Posted by: Zak at March 14, 2007 05:52 PM

I can't talk about my consulting work, sorry. I signed a non-disclosure agreement.

Posted by: Michael J. Totten at March 14, 2007 08:41 PM

Wow Iraq might eventually be host to some decent ski resorts.

The Switzerland of the Middle east.

Of course the moonbats on the left will over-react when they see any industry of value developing, and suggest that it is another form of American military and industrial imperialism !

Hi Michael,

If you get a chance to read this entry, please try and find out what you can while your'e there, of the Kurdistan Democratic party leader, Massoud Barzani's involvement with supplying logisitics and weapons to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), (terrorists who have been responsible for approximately 30,000 deaths in Turkey since 1984.)

As well as the leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Jalal Talabani giving the wink and the nod to the PKK's activities in Turkey.

Michael Ruben writes in the Weekly Standard on it here: http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/013/397lgxzg.asp?pg=1

And I blogged on it here as well: http://tundratabloid.blogspot.com/2007/03/are-iraqs-kurds-taking-page-from-fatahs.html

Have a safe trip.
Cheers/ KGS

Is that a gun in your waistband?

Posted by: Joe Marino at March 15, 2007 05:17 PM

Oh, it's a camera, sorry.

Switzerland? Looks an awful lot like Tejon Pass on the way to Bakersfield. I mean, to the people in LA, Bakersfield may as well be in Kurdistan.

Posted by: Pat Patterson at March 16, 2007 05:29 AM

Glad to see you there safe & sound! Can't wait to read more...stay safe.

Regarding KGS' comment about Mr. Rubin's article in the Weekly Standard, I posted a comment over there but I have no idea where they post comments or letters to the editor - does anyone know?

Rubin is obviously one of those Arab apologists who, like Baker and Carter, has a vested interest in supporting them. The Big Lie always incorporates a little of the truth, but it remains a lie none the less.

I reposted my comments over at KGS' site just for the heck of it.

Keep up the good work, Michael.
