Pierre Gemayel has been assassinated.

Can anyone familiar with lebanon give some background on who the guy was, who liked him, who didn't like him, and who would benefit from the hit?

All right - I give - what's the point of the "One word" post, and who cares about someone named Nancy Rommelman?

You beat me to the punch, rosignol.

Yes, Pierre Gemayel was assassinated. Comments?

My guess, although I am hardly the most erudite Lebanon commentator here, is that Syria was behind it. I wouldn't be surprised if Hezbollah had a role, either, since they've been looking to cause domestic troubles.

My question is, how will the other confessional communities react to this? For a couple of yeara now there has a been low-level campagin of assassination of moderate Lebanese politicians and journalists. How long are the Christians and Sunnis and Druze going to keep taking it before they hit back?

I think it's time for the anti-Syria Lebanese to quit wasting their time hoping that the U.N. will help them out, and start fighting back in the Chicago way.

This is getting ridiculous.

SoCal,

The Christians and other groups keep saying the last thing they want is to go back to a civil war. Sadly, it's starting to look like their only other option is Syrian-Hezbullah-Iranian domination. They have to determine what is potentially worse, to fight the S-H-I axis or bow to them.

I think memories of the civil war are fresh enough that it'll have to get pretty freakin' awful before that happens... but it's also more likely that it'll be 'everyone vs hizbullah' instead of 'us against them vs those other guys'.

I would really love to see the day when all of the Lebanese factions turn on Hezbollah.

Maybe this assassination will presage a Hezbullah putsch? Perhaps they are trying to throw their opponents off balance sort of like al-Qaeda did to Massoud before 9/11?
