Viva la Muerte!

Hezbollah rockets kill two Arab Israeli boys in Nazareth, but the Arab resident of the town blame Israel, at least when the microphones are turned on.

"It's war, and we are stuck in the middle," said his brother, Omar Talussi. "All the world knows the reason, everybody knows."
Another mourner chimed in: "It's Israel's fault."

"That's it," Omar Talussi said, wiping his hands in a motion of disgust.

Many Arabs here, who are Israeli citizens, feel they are involved in their own low-level fight with Israel.
Though they make up about 20 percent of Israel's population, their towns often get less development money than comparable Jewish areas and their average incomes are usually far less than those of the general population.

For that you feed your children to the missiles?

"Everybody knows it was an accident," said Afif Zidani, who acted as a translator for the grieving family. Though Hezbollah offered no public apology for the killings, many here heard rumors of one and that was good enough for them.

It would be morbidly funny if it were's so sad. As Amba says:

How do you deal a decisive, clean blow to a terrorist organization that uses its own neighbors as human shields? You don't. You either grant them an unacceptable kind of immunity, or you go after them, whatever it takes, and become a hated slaughterer yourself. The terrorists are not blamed, because, after all, they were not harming their neighbors; only living and quietly stockpiling arms among them, and even dispensing social services. The death and destruction they call down on their neighbors serves their purposes, and they have proven before that they have no scruples about sacrificing Muslim lives for the cause. (Two Israeli Arab boys were killed by a Hezbollah rocket that struck Nazareth.) But they are not blamed. Even though the catastrophe for their people may prove a perverse victory for them. Because their power feeds on chaos, suffering, and rage.
This is how terrorists have the world by the balls.

The reactions of the Arabs in this sick little anecdote appear to me to have nothing to do with 'terrorism' per se despite the lamentations above.

This appears to sum up perfectly the Arab mind-set. I hate you if you kill me; I hate you if you don't. It seems to me that a mind-set like that invites but one realistic response(if you take the roll over and die option off the table).

Amba in the comments following this excerpt says --"It is truly a no-win situation, in that you cannot have your ideals and victory, or perhaps even survival."

Well maybe not but as long as I can wake up tomorrow I might perhaps hopefully buy some new ideals. Time is funny that way, much as we try to pretend otherwise. But however much time elapses after I am dead, I will still be DEAD.

Think I will take door #2, Alex. That dead thing sounds like a bit of a bummer.

Thats the real problem with these stupid FASCIST fanatics, they drag everyone down to their level, sooner or later. The difference is that I won't likely be staying there longer than is necessary to stop their lunacy at the source.

Slippery slope be damned.

Why does Israel have to use jets to go after the people firing rockets?

There are plenty of weapons that only kill their intended target...provided the person wielding it is brave enough to...be on the ground.

The Lebanese Minister of Defense warned Israel Thursday that if IDF ground forces are sent into southern Lebanon, Lebanese troops will fight along with the Hizbullah against Israel.

The proof that Lebanon is not united in their 'effort' to disarm Hizbollah. The government of Lebanon has blood on their hands. Israel is fighting against two enemies... the Lebanese government and the Hizbollah terrorists. Somethines it's difficult to distinguish one from another.

To Monkeyboy, proportionality means that Israel should fight Hizbollah rockets with rocks and sticks. Israel didn't start this war and this talk of proportionality is pure BS and is only meant to give the terrorists status.

Armed terrorists are only a part of this war. These terrorists are supported by states like Syria and Iran. They're also supported by a billion dollar, somewhat 'underground' economy.

Asymetric warfare gives the terrorists every advantage in this war. But the tactic of asymetric warfare leaves terrorism's higher level supporters, like Syrian government employees, Saudi bankers, wealthy Al Haramain donors relatively unprotected. They used to hide behind plausible deniability, but terrorism has been so successful, and they've been so untouched in the fighting, they're becoming a lot more open about their support.

However, they're still relatively unprotected.

Those higher and mid level supporters are the fat, easy targets. They're the people we should be targeting in this war, any way we can.

Get this through your head: the Israelis are NOT OBLIGED TO GIVE PEOPLE CHANCES TO KILL THEM.

War is about killing the enemy and destroying their stuff. When you kill enough people and destroy enough stuff, one side or the other surrenders and stops fighting. This 'proportional response' crap basically means that conflicts get prolonged for decades and niether side gets to the 'too many people are dead, too much stuff is destroyed, we should surrender' stage. Instead, we get endless low-level sniping that just result in more suffering over a longer period of time because the dispute never gets resolved- it's easier to keep fighting (at a low level) than to resolve the matter- and a government (and national leaders) no longer face the possibility of being thrown out of office or killed in the fighting.

This is not progress, it is idiocy. If WW2 had been fought on these terms, it would still be going on.

Most people, when faced with a superior military, prefer to use diplomacy and negotiation to resolve their disputes, because they know that if they resort to force, they will lose.

For some reason, Hizbullah seems to think that the way to deal with a superior military is to attack it.

It is a tragedy that so many lebanese must suffer because of Hizbullah's stupidity.

Random shelling would be what Hezbollah are doing, monkyboy. But there is the question of effectiveness; I am inclined to think the most effective approach will combine the force of air and long-range attacks with the thouroughness of troops on the ground- and indeed, this appears to be what the Israelis are doing.

On the other hand, any previous tactic might be adjudged ineffective given that this situation arose?

That is precisely why they are using their jets. They carefully identify targets, doublecheck them and then use extreme precision to only hit what they have determined to be an appropriate target. With laser or camera guided precision.

Unlike say, lobbing rockets into any civilian area they can find and then running behind children for cover.

Precision doesn't mean the same thing as accuracy, Mesa. You can precisely guide a bomb onto the wrong target.

Countries that use their Air Force to go to war get a distorted picture.

Of the 2556 American military personnel killed in Iraq so far, only 26 were Air Force.

No wonder the U.S. Air Force is the only branch of the U.S. military that wants to go into Iran.

It's just a video game to these guys...they get to blow stuff without exposing themselves to any danger.

And from 30,000 feet...wars always look ike they're going great!

Monkeyboy, war is not a game of tennis. The aim is to keep killing the other guy until he calls "stop". There is no honour in taking casualties to achieve that end.
If it is done from 30,000ft, with no casualties, then thats great.

That said, some things cant be achieved from the air. But thats not the point you are making.
