Hezbollah Flexes its Missiles

By Callimachus:

NYT reports:
The power and sophistication of the missile and rocket arsenal that Hezbollah has used in recent days has caught the United States and Israel off guard, and officials in both countries are just now learning the extent to which the militant group has succeeded in getting weapons from Iran and Syria.

While the Bush administration has stated that cracking down on weapons proliferation is one of its top priorities, the arming of Hezbollah shows the blind spots of American and other Western intelligence services in assessing the threat, officials from across those governments said.

American and Israeli officials said the successful attack last Friday on an Israeli naval vessel was the strongest evidence to date of direct support by Iran to Hezbollah. The attack was carried out with a sophisticated antiship cruise missile, the C-802, an Iranian-made variant of the Chinese Silkworm, an American intelligence official said.

At the same time, American and Israeli officials cautioned that they had found no evidence that Iranian operatives working in Lebanon launched the antiship missile themselves.

But neither Jerusalem nor Washington had any idea that Hezbollah had such a missile in its arsenal, the officials said, adding that the Israeli ship had not even activated its missile defense system because intelligence assessments had not identified a threat from such a radar-guided cruise missile.

...

But it was Friday’s successful launching of a C-802 cruise missile that most alarmed officials in Washington and Jerusalem.

Iran began buying dozens of those sophisticated antiship missiles from the Chinese during the 1990’s, until the United States pressured Beijing to cease the sales.

Until Friday, however, Western intelligence services did not know that Iran had managed to ship C-802 missiles to Hezbollah.

Officials said it was likely that Iran trained Hezbollah fighters on how to successfully fire and guide the missiles, and that members of Iran’s Al Quds force — the faction of the Revolutionary Guards that trains foreign forces — would not necessarily have to be on the scene to launch the C-802.

At the same time, some experts said Iran was not likely to deploy such a sophisticated weapon without also sending Revolutionary Guard crews with the expertise to fire the missile.

One wonders what else they have we don't know about. Posted by Callimachus at July 18, 2006 08:51 PM

I'm 'glad' they launched these 'better' weapons. I think they made a mistake if truth be told.

Israel is correct in assuming that it has a window of opportunity to deal with these 'fascists'. That they have shown themselves to be very much more dangerous than previously assumed, merely makes their defeat more necessary.

Nothing they have shown thus far is truly devastating, so I don't think they can really harm Israel.

As I said,I think they made a mistake by tipping their hands in a period where they had no chance to count on the 'usual suspects' to save their ass(ets). Although I forced myself to watch the BBC tonight and they are sure giving it the 'old college try'. Geez I loath that outfit.

But really what do I know? I base all my opinions on the fact that ever time I see those parades in Iran or Hezbollaland, I am reminded of nothing so much as the Nuremberg Rally, saved for posterity by Leni Riefenstahl.

Gives me the creeps. Evidently many others appear not to notice the similarities. Or not to care.

The bad guys seem to be working their way through the weaponry of WWII rather quickly...looks like they're up to V2s now.

>>>I don't think they can really harm Israel.

Tell that to the dead in Israelis, and the dead IDF that were sent to protect them, and all the resulting dead Lebanese. Those missiles harmed-- and continue to harm-- lots of people on both sides of the border. And if regional war breaks out and thousands more die you can blame those missiles for it, I don't care how "primitive" they may be.

The latest rumours are that sources close to Sheikh Nasrallah have threatened that Tel Aviv will be showered by 500 rockets within the hour, so citizens should evacuate.

Hopefully its just empty rhetoric.

It may be rhetoric, or it may be real:

Yep.

Iran's a lot closer than anyone thinks, and they've been stalling for time.

Is there any other interpetation that makes sense?

I think they made a mistake if truth be told.

Since they're fighting, I don't see how using their better weapons is a mistake. I don't think they 'tipped their hand' so much as played their hand.

they had no chance to count on the 'usual suspects' to save their ass(ets).

I haven't yet seen anything specifically suggesting that support channels from Syria, Iran, or within Lebanon have been disrupted, though I might be missing it.

Let's be clear on the Leftist rhetoric if/when Iran gets a bomb and if/when it is used:

It was justified because of Israeli oppression/ agression.

Since they're fighting, I don't see how using their better weapons is a mistake. I don't think they 'tipped their hand' so much as played their hand.

Hizbullah expended a C-802- a weapon the Israelis didn't know they had- and all they accomplished was damaging one ship and killing at most 4 Israelis.

That was a bad trade.

I haven't yet seen anything specifically suggesting that support channels from Syria, Iran, or within Lebanon have been disrupted, though I might be missing it.

The airport is closed. The ports in Lebanon are blockaded. Bridges are out.

Channels are not completely closed, but they are definitely disrupted. The only way in or out of Lebanon now is via Syria. Assad cannot be happy- he's got Israelis to the south and in the Med, Turkey (an Israeli ally) to the north, and the US occupying Iraq to the east.

If this was just between Israel and Hizbullah, Assad might be tempted to be obnoxious... but pretty much everyone has decided Iran is behind this, and that means Syria doesn't just have the Israelis to worry about.

I wonder if he's picked out a spider hole?

Posted by: rosignol at July 19, 2006 02:08 AM

No matter what they using - It's taking a painful toll. On the other hand, the toll on Lebanese people is not easy as well... Hope it will be over soon.
I just posted some numbers you might be intrested at.

"Hizbullah expended a C-802- a weapon the Israelis didn't know they had- and all they accomplished was damaging one ship and killing at most 4 Israelis."

Ships in the area - - especially US naval ships - - are responding by staying away from the area. The c802 has a 98% hit rate when fired the right way. It also has a turbojet engine, i.e., doesn't use a rocket engine & fuel.

I read the Israelis who were struck did not have the radar-jamming equipment turned on that is used to block radar-controlled cruise missiles like the c802 - - no one thought Hezbollah had this kind of gear.

Except for the US made Harpoon anti-ship missile, the c802 is considered one of the best anti-ship missiles in the world. The speculation I have seen is that Hezbollah got the missile from Iran, who got the technology from North Korea, who likewise got it from China.

iran has at been at fight with USA the day they have taken over american embassy holding american diplomats hostage for some 400 days and humiliating her by killing 254 marines in beirut. i mean who is hezbollah, it is the secret service of iran, their proxy. it is like before the main bands get to the stage they start with appetizer group to warm up people for the main event. these are the first signs of showdown that will take place between america and iran in the near future.it is inevitable and it is vital for america to overcome the evil mullahs unless there is alternative source of energy or
america is willing to cede its super power position in world. time will tell.

cal,

America did manage to shoot down an Iranian airliner filled with civvies.

Posted by: monkyboy at July 19, 2006 06:48 PM

That was a fuckup, not payback.

Posted by: rosignol at July 19, 2006 09:51 PM

Interesting that Chinese tech may eventually be used against Israel, so that if Israel sells to China, it may eventually find its way to Hezbollah.
