Nineteen Eighty Four

Yafawi in the comments section linked to a photo gallery of North Korea. Many of the pictures are illegal.

Here are two of them.

North Korea Streets.jpg

Crossing the street is illegal because you just might get hit by a car.

North Korea Beach.jpg

That's an electrified barbed wire fence on the beach to prevent North Koreans from swimming away in the ocean.

Here are the rest.

Had my own version on my blog two days ago, Michael.

Posted by: Gary Farber at June 18, 2006 02:43 AM

Incidentally, I thought it was only polite to credit the photographer by name, and point to his original site, as well, myself.

Posted by: Gary Farber at June 18, 2006 02:44 AM

Gary,

Where is the original Russian site?

Posted by: Michael J. Totten at June 18, 2006 03:36 AM

Michael,

The original Russian site is http://tema.ru, the pictures are under http://tema.ru/travel, more specifically under "????. ????? X"

The guy's name is Artemiy Lebedev.

Posted by: Vince at June 18, 2006 06:26 AM

But at least they have free healthcare.

Posted by: Carlos at June 18, 2006 06:36 AM

Where I said it was in my post? I sort of figured that you might actually look.

Oh, ok. The photographer is Artemii Lebedev (one of the pictures I posted was of him, wearing a shirt insulting the USSR, ungrecognized by his minders, who didn't speak Russian), and the original site (so far as I'm aware) is this in Russian. As I credited it.

Posted by: Gary Farber at June 18, 2006 07:00 AM

That was an amazing peak into a commie hellhole.

Now for a photo essay of Cuba.

Posted by: Carlos at June 18, 2006 07:11 AM

Gary, your url-link on this site is borked. Not your fault, something with movable type, probably. Made it harder to get to your site and check it out.

Posted by: rustifer at June 18, 2006 08:38 AM

"Gary, your url-link on this site is borked."

Well, aside from the fact that I see that the HTML is correct, it also works when I test it, so I don't know what to say to that, though thanks for the feedback.

Posted by: Gary Farber at June 18, 2006 09:33 AM

Oh, and plus I've gotten a number of hits from people clicking the link, so I know it works for other people.

Posted by: Gary Farber at June 18, 2006 09:33 AM

Was it me, or did "the big monument" look just like the Eye of Sauron? Creepy.

Posted by: Sean P at June 18, 2006 11:24 AM

that's evil.

Posted by: Wissam at June 18, 2006 02:33 PM

Is it that hard to jump the fence and swim away to freedom?

Posted by: PoliticalCritic at June 18, 2006 03:17 PM

I assume that has to be a joke.

Posted by: John Jenkins at June 18, 2006 04:25 PM

Gary, the HTML for the link in your name is not correct. It won't work, and I, at least, get redirected to WC3. You have the protocol in there twice.

Posted by: John Jenkins at June 18, 2006 04:27 PM

"Gary, the HTML for the link in your name is not correct."

Hmm, so it is, above. I'd not noticed that; thanks. I don't know why; the default memory when I loaded this page again is correct. I'll see what happens when I post this, as it's correct as filled out in the field. (Gosh, this is fascinating, isn't it?)

Posted by: Gary Farber at June 18, 2006 06:07 PM

Okay, I see what the problem is. The text in the field was accidentally and incorrectedly entered by me as "http//amygdalagf.blogspot.com," without the necessary ":" after "http." Mystery solved.

Well, there are plenty of other posts at my blog, at least a handful of which I'd hope are more interesting than this thrilling elaboration on HTML protocol, though, warning, many are from the Dread Liberal-Type Perspective. But, hey, you can always yell at me and tell me how wrong-headed I am.

Another site with images taken by a Brit who traveled to North Korea two years ago:

The most mindbendingly 1984ish thing I heard about North Korea is that the radios obtainable there are all pre-tuned to and exclusively usable on one frequency only, that of the North Korean state radio.......
