Hang On

I'm coming back soon, I promise. When I get here I'll have a story from the Lebanese mountains. I intended to publish it months ago but it got bumped and put into cold storage. You will, I hope, find it entertaining as well as revealing of a certain mindset.

In the meantime, here is something from the AP worth noting:
BAGHDAD, Iraq - American and Iraqi forces have carried out 452 raids since last week's killing of terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, and 104 insurgents were killed during those actions, the U.S. military said Thursday.

Maj. Gen. William Caldwell, a U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad, said the raids were carried out nationwide and led to the discovery of 28 significant arms caches.

He said 255 of the raids were joint operations, while 143 were carried out by Iraqi forces alone. The raids also resulted in the captures of 759 "anti-Iraqi elements."

In the meantime, here is something from the AP worth noting:

Sure is, and it looks like the Iraqi gov't is making a determined effort to secure Baghdad. Including, by the way, offering talks with insurgents aimed at reconciliation.

While this may make a dent in the anti-coalition insurgency, there's still the problem of the sectarian violence that is being fuelled by the militias. That will require a political solution rather than a security-based one. Of course, with a government now in place, part of that political solution is already there. Let's hope they can provide the other missing pieces.

Excellent! Let's hope that the Iraqis can take care of the Iraqis!

Posted by: Ratatosk at June 15, 2006 01:53 PM

gotta love the famous anti-democratic media and their creative use of quotations. the iraqi army goes after terrorists and the Associated "Press" says:

The raids also resulted in the captures of 759 "anti-Iraqi elements."

An interesting perspective can be found at Omar's place on Iraq the Model, too, concerning the mass kidnapping of 50 or so people who were waiting for the bus...seems it might have been a precursor to the bomb drop on Zarqawi.

Posted by: Jauhara at June 15, 2006 04:50 PM

The quote marks would indicate that they are quoting someone when they use the phrase.

"The quote marks would indicate that they are quoting someone when they use the phrase."--DPU

Distasteful as it is to me to 'defend'* the media, I have to agree with DPU on this one.

This term seems to have come from 'our' side and not from the infamous ' quote' factory maintained by the illustrious media. I would assume it is intended to cover the gamut of those who might have gotten swept up by the raids. Not all AQ, not all Baathist, not all anything really except antis. Just your good old, reliable, AIE . Considering the areas swept, it is probably pretty fair terminology.

*--- word used extremely loosely .

Posted by: dougf at June 15, 2006 07:01 PM

It's apparently a direct quote from Major General William Caldwell, and is his description for those captured, hence the quote marks.

Got my credit card bill yesterday and on it was a $15.00 gift to Michael Totten.
I have never received a thank you.
And you deleted my comment too.
Well your welcome, Mr. Totten.
Advice: Rude and greed don't go far.

Zarkawi has lousy INFOSEC. Kept too much data where it could be recovered. And his friends and allies do not know what names, locations, etc. are compromised.
They are either running, looking for a new hideout or in "use it (and) or lose it" mode. Hence OP Together Forward targeted on the "use it or lose it" group.
The offers of reconciliation are targeted at allies that know that they may be compromised.
Last chance to get out...

Posted by: dj elliott at June 15, 2006 10:11 PM

I know, I know, technically it should be had.

But, his failure in INFOSEC is still actively helping US. Even in (and after) death, he is a failure, as is his cause...

Posted by: dj elliott at June 15, 2006 10:17 PM

Terry,

I have sent thank you notes to almost everyone who has given me money, but there was a short period where I was swamped and wasn't able to do it. (I was blowing off my friends, too, so don't take it personally.) Please allow me to say thank you right now.

I have not deleted a single comment from this Web site for months, and the only person whose comments I did delete was posting death threats and rape fantasies about my wife. There is a misunderstanding or a technical glitch somewhere. When and where did you leave a comment that doesn't appear today? This is the first I've heard of missing comments.

Posted by: Michael J. Totten at June 15, 2006 10:41 PM

Zarkawi has lousy INFOSEC. Kept too much data where it could be recovered.

If you're referring to the USB drive that was supposed to have been found in his pocket, well, yeah. Zarkawi may have thought that if the US can search his pockets, he's pretty much boned anyway, so why bother?

:-)

rosignol

And burned his people and cause with that piece of stupidity.

That's why I'm smiling.

http://www.strategypage.com/qnd/iraq/articles/20060616.aspx

"So far, the June 7th strike has led to over 500 more raids. There have been so many raids, that there are not enough U.S. troops to handle it, and over 30 percent of the raids have been carried by Iraqi troops or police, with no U.S. involvement. Nearly a thousand terrorist suspects have been killed or captured. The amount of information captured has overwhelmed intelligence organizations in Iraq, and more translators and analysts are assisting, via satellite link, from the United States and other locations."

"The terrorist organization has basically been taken over anti-government Sunni Arabs. That made the capture of Zarqawi even more valuable, as his address book contained a who's who of the anti-government Sunni Arab forces. This group has been hurt badly by last week's raids."

As I have said elsewhere since I heard about that on the 8th, they are now either running for the border, finding new hideouts or in "use or (and) lose" mode. Hence Operation Together Forward.
