Gaius, Meet the World

PORTLAND, OREGON -- I need one day off blogging. So we interupt this Iraq report to introduce our new baby Siamese kitten Gaius, who just arrived in our house today, to the rest of the world. (He has no idea he's on the Internet.)

Gaius1.jpg

Gaius2.jpg

UPDATE: I suppose someone is going to ask me how we came up with the name Gaius. So I might as well deal with that here.

Well, Reginald wasn't going to work and Horace was right out. My wife and I both agreed on that much from the beginning.

I met a Turk who named his cat Jeff, and I thought that was pretty cool - but only if you're a Turk. Jeff did inspire us to give our cat a foreign name, though.

I wanted to name the little guy Fulgencio. A cat deserves a strong name. But Shelly just couldn't imagine standing at the back door and calling out Fulgencio, Fulgencio until the cat came in the house. Too many syllables. Mustafa would have been funny, but only if the cat had a moustache, which he doesn't and won't. Gaius was pretty much the only name left after all that.

He has no idea he's on the Internet.

Perhaps the handle GAIVS is still available on Typekey?

I suppose someone is going to ask me how we came up with the name Gaius.

Alternative namesakes:

- Gaius Caesar, of the Julii,
- Gaius Balthazar, of Battlestar Galactica.

(These are the only two Gaiuses I know. Prior to introduction to Gaius, of the Kittens, that is.)

"Mustafa would have been funny, but only if the cat had a moustache, which he doesn't and won't."

Excuse me? A cat without whiskers?

Posted by: moustache at April 13, 2006 04:21 AM

lewy, don't forget Gaius (Caius) Cassius, one of Caesar's assassins...or Gaius "Little Boots", the first completely nutso Roman Emperor...or Gaius Marius, dictator and reformer of the Roman army...

Posted by: Brian Swisher at April 13, 2006 06:00 AM

Hmm, the first "Gaius" that comes to my mind is Gaius Baltar, from Battlestar Galactica.

Michael, you'd better hope that cat doesn't eventually betray humanity to a race of vengeful robots.

"Gaius" as in "no more Mr. Nice Gaius"? lol!

Looks like we got us a Battlestar Galactica fan here.

Posted by: Carlos at April 13, 2006 08:20 AM

Question, though. If you're in the middle east(?), and the kitten is in Oregon(?), how did you get a pic together???

Posted by: Carlos at April 13, 2006 08:27 AM

Since you want a strong muscular name, and you are in the middle east, how about Darius Meow? (a pun on Darius Milhaud)...oh, but I forgot. He's not a Persian cat. How about Felis, or Gatus? I'm sure that whatever you try to stick on the little fella, he's sure to ignore it.

Posted by: Jauhara al Kafirah at April 13, 2006 08:38 AM

I'm enjoying your "Back-to-Iraq" series, and, although not able to do a PayPal help-out right now, I've got a counter-proposal: Since you're back in good ol 'River City' and I'm just upriver in Canby, let me treat you to a micro-brew and munchies at a local brew pub of your choice. I know 'em all, pretty much, and like 'em equally.

A cat deserves a strong name.

If I had a cat, (instead of all these damn dogs), I'd name him "Rumsfeld."

Or "Wildebeest."

Posted by: greenmamba at April 13, 2006 08:54 AM

Carlos, I'm writing about where I very recently was, not where I currently am. See here.

Posted by: Michael J. Totten at April 13, 2006 09:39 AM

He is too cute! Little fuzz ball! (yes, I have cats myself, why do you ask?)

I like Gaius. Although, I, too, thought of Battlestar Galactica.

Posted by: BeckyJ at April 13, 2006 09:49 AM

I have a siamese cat. I'd never actually BOUGHT a cat before so I kept complaining about the price. My son, trying to change the subject, suggested that we think about a name for the cat.

Once again I complained about the price of the cat.

"It needs an asian sounding name," My son said.

"I cannot believe I paid $100.00 for a Goddamned cat!" I replied.

And so it went.

but we did give the cat a name. It combines the need for something vaguely asian with my complaints about the cost.

this cat is named "ChaChing"

Posted by: skipsailing at April 13, 2006 11:57 AM

What a neat kitty and good name...Makes me almost ashamed to admit what my cat's name is..But, this is what happens when you let grandchildren pick out names.. My poor cat got stuck with "Gary Larry"....I cannot bring myself to call him that so he is just "Gary"....

Posted by: cathy at April 13, 2006 12:28 PM

My cat's name is Iskender. It's the name of a Turkish meat dish. The cat is neither Turkish nor edible. I was not responsible for the naming of the cat. I call him kitty.

Posted by: Grant McEntire at April 13, 2006 02:13 PM

Also, Gaius Gracchus, a statesman who was lynched by a mob of patricians for trying to settle plebians and veterans with lands in Italy. A good man brought low...

I thought Iskander was also the Turkish name for Alexander? Either way, Grant, it's a cool name.

I, for one, welcome our new felidae overlords.

Posted by: Alan Kellogg at April 13, 2006 05:32 PM

Gaius is a great name for a cat. My family has found that naming pets after a theme is a good way to inspire creativity. Thus our lizards were named after tyrants (such as Ghengis and Attila), our cats were literary, and so on.

I currently own two cats named Percival and Nimuë, though the latter has morphed into Mui. I suggest that if you have to append a surname, make it a Gaius who is well known as a public speaker. Siamese are like that.

Posted by: B. Durbin at April 16, 2006 01:32 PM

awwwwwww...what a pretty kitty. I love kittens! There's not much better than kittens and puppies and babies in this world. I wish we could keep them at that age. :)

Thanks for sharing! And I still can't figure out exactly how you pronounce his name. I went with pretty normal cat names ... Mischief, Jazmyn, and Sherbert (yes, an orange cat). Mischief & Jazmyn remain but sadly Sherbert (we think) got eaten.

No new kitties for us though...they'd be dog food very quickly in our home. Keep your new kitty safe, healthy, and happy!
