A Hazardous Profession
Lebanon, nearly alone in the Arab world, has a free press. The country is no longer ruled by an unelected foreign dictatorship. Its parliament is national, democratic, and sovereign.
But loose agents of the ancien régime are still active, and they’re doing their damnest to violently intimidate journalists into submission.BEIRUT (Reuters) - A prominent anti-Syrian news anchor was seriously wounded when her car exploded in Lebanon on Sunday, fuelling fears of a slide into violence as the U.N. wraps up a probe into the murder of an ex-prime minister.Earlier reports said she had an arm and a leg amputated, which turned out not to be true. It looks like she’s still in bad shape, but at least she’s alive and has more than two limbs.May Chidiac, 43, a Christian journalist, is a familiar face to Lebanese. She had hosted a talk show earlier in the day to discuss public fears of more violence ahead of the U.N. investigators presenting their report, expected next month.
A security source said the bomb weighed around 500 grams (one pound) and was planted beneath Chidiac's white four-wheel-drive. It exploded as she was getting in, wrecking the car.
Doctors said her left leg beneath the knee was blown off in the blast, which also set hair and clothes ablaze. They also operated to try to save her left hand. She was in a stable condition in hospital on Sunday night.
I met dozens of Lebanese in April during the Cedar Revolution. They are tough, brave, and war-hardened -- not at all the sort to cringe or back down from a fight.
The campaign to silence their journalists is not very effective. If it were effective the culprits could dryly smack their hands together, say that’s that, and find someone else to pick on for a change. The fact that they still feel threatened by journalists is a good indication that the Lebanese media is doing excellent work.
I take personal selfish comfort in the fact that so far all the targeted journalists write and broadcast in Arabic. Beirut’s English-language newspaper The Daily Star published article after article sharply critical of the Syrian regime even throughout the occupation. As far as I know, no one on its staff has been harmed, nor have any foreign journalists ever been harmed.
UPDATE: Anonymous blogger "Lebanon.Profile" over at the Lebanese Political Journal wonders if some dark force is trying to engineer the perfect storm.
Posted by Michael J. Totten at September 25, 2005 05:23 PMAnother shot in the war. The Syrians, or should I say more correctly Assad and his inner-Iranian-backed-circle are in their final throws of life and they are desperate to hold on. Let's hope there are no work accidents in Damascus.

Posted by: chuck at September 25, 2005 10:02 PM"I take personal selfish comfort in the fact that so far all the targeted journalists write and broadcast in Arabic."
Probably a very good indication on the relative importance of Arabic vs English reporting there. If you can't read the Arabic press for yourself, you're gonna be flying half blind.
Posted by: Michael Farris at September 25, 2005 10:51 PMMichael Farris,
Not necessarily. Do you read the Daily Star? You should, if you're at all interested in Lebanon. In many ways the reporting there is better than in the Arabic press because there is far less self-censorship.
The English-language reporting is considered 1) less threatening because it caters primarily to foreigners and expats, and 2) far more risky to target.
Posted by: Michael J. Totten at September 26, 2005 12:03 AMI don't read the Star (I'm not so tremendously interested in the Middle East, though I can [half-assed] read newspapers in Turkish aince Turkey is the country there that interests me most).
I wasn't talking about quality of journalism, but rather importance to people on the ground and the expression of native (as opposed to expat) viewpoints.
Newspapers that cater to foreigners and expats tend to report from that viewpoint, as they should. It does tend however to differ from that of the people who live in the country permanently. Also, in my experience, locals who know English well and who hang around foreigners a lot are usually very unrepresentative of local viewpoints. You probably also realize, that in a lot of places in the world, answering the person and not the question is considered good policy.
Posted by: Michael Farris at September 26, 2005 12:57 AMMichael Farris: I wasn't talking about quality of journalism, but rather importance to people on the ground and the expression of native (as opposed to expat) viewpoints.
Certainly true.
Posted by: Michael J. Totten at September 26, 2005 02:17 AMThe next paragraph was also true, and much more important for a person who's really interested in the truth to understand.
Posted by: Link at September 26, 2005 04:41 AMAfter I saw the picture of her blown up car on TA3 last night, I wondered if you would notice.
I think it's not exactly a "pefect storm", but a clear desire to push the Christians into self-defense, since the Lebanon police seem unable to defend "the Christians".
There's no good direct answer to this type of challenge -- the right desire is to reach a state where the Sunnis, Shia, Lebanese Hizbollah, and (perhaps especially) the Druze, accept living in peace with the Christians.
I hope you remain untargeted; I suspect you will be fairly safe from any high level attacks.
Posted by: Tom Grey - Liberty Dad at September 26, 2005 05:37 AMM. Farris: "Also, in my experience, locals who know English well and who hang around foreigners a lot are usually very unrepresentative of local viewpoints."
Not valid in Lebanon, where nearly everyone speaks either English, French or both in addition to Arabic. Having established that, the Daily Star and L'orient le jour (French) do not cater to expats, but rather to English language and French language readers in Lebanon, regardless of nationality (many of their readers are Lebanese and Lebanese expats abroad).
Tom Grey: "There's no good direct answer to this type of challenge -- the right desire is to reach a state where the Sunnis, Shia, Lebanese Hizbollah, and (perhaps especially) the Druze, accept living in peace with the Christians."
There is no state of war between the mentioned sects in Lebanon, at least not anymore. It is quite impressive that these bombings are strengthening the sense of "national unity" in the country.

Just out of curiousity, do you still plan on updating this blog the next 6 months?

But where do you get your “evidence” of “Syrian involvement”???
The sheikh Rafiq Hariri information and propaganda center?
The Waco and Houston affiliates of Fox News?
The Wahhabi foundation for the propagation of the “truth”?
I kind of wonder...
You should know better, and your readers deserve more than second-hand rumors scooped from Saudi-funded media outlets such as LBC, Al-Nahar, Al-Daily Star et al.
All we know at this stage is that we have yet more anti-Christian (“anti-Nasara” in vernacular Saudi parlance, the language of Hariri’s Saudi paymasters) sectarian killings in Beirut.
No matter which bunch of cowardly fundamentalist thugs did it, be they Wahhabi murderers à la Hariri or Hizbullah-style Persian infiltrators, this has to stop now!
Prime Minister Seniorita and Saad Hariri are responsible for this horrendous crime: after all they now control all security/police apparatus and can’t blame it on Colonel Rustom Ghazaleh, General Alcazar or Inspector Jacques Clouseau: they must tender their resignation immediately, and agree to dissolve this highly incompetent Wahhabi-controlled puppet Parliament.

Who do you think did it, pal?
Posted by: Michael J. Totten at September 26, 2005 10:32 AMMJT said: “Who do you think did it, pal?”
Well, in all honesty I don’t know...
BUT I think the chattering classes in the US and the Mideast are simply too eager to peddle Saudi conspiracy theories involving Colonel Rustom, General Ghazi or Inspector Jacques Clouseau!
Mainstream/Wahhabi-sponsored media are blaming it on the decrepit Syrian regime, and as the barrel of oil stands above $65, most “independent” Arab and American journalists are sticking to this convenient canard...Not to mention the fact that moustached “Baathist butchers” make highly caricaturesque strawmen!
On the other hand, (what’s left of) pro-Syrian media in Beirut and Teheran are blaming it squarely on ubiquitous "Zionist agents".
I personally believe both theories are totally unfounded to use a polite word.
“Qui bono?” as Roman lawyers used to say: who benefits from these horrendous crimes targeting Christian journalists and intellectuals?
Well, based on that sound legal principal, I’d say Saudi Arabia and Iran are BY FAR the most likely suspects: I’d bet good money the former did it, using proxy executioners e.g. brainwashed Lebanese “Salafists” and/or Palestinian mercenaries trained in the desolate quarter’s terrorist camp(use)s.
Posted by: Dr Victorino de la Vega at September 26, 2005 11:19 AMI don't know, Doc. When trying to assess likely suspects in a crime, it's pretty common to ask who benefits most from the deed.
So, who benefits from a fractured Lebanon?
In descending order, from my admittedly limited knowledge of the subject:
- Hezbollah
- Syria
- Iraqi Ba'athists (read: Zarqawi, at this point)
- Iran
- al-Quida and fellow travellers.
Note that these choices aren't mutually exclusive. The agency responsible for the bombing could have ties to any or all the above-named groups. But given recent history, I don't think it's unfair or unreasonable to look at choices A and B first (and let's face it, it seems pretty naive to treat them as truly discrete).
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for a good bit of Saud bashing, but pushing the Saudis front-and-center as the most likely actors here seems like like a reach.

Also, here is something I just ran across that looks really interesting.
Reporters Without Borders has just released a Handbook for Bloggers & Cyber-Dissidents.
It sounds fascinating and I can't wait to read it. Given your recent and future experiences, I thought you'd want to check it out.

Posted by: CP at September 26, 2005 02:24 PMDr. - I agree with Mark - this doesn't fit the Saudi/al Qaeda M.O.
If graves had been desecrated, if any large groups of non-Wahhabis had been slaughtered with shocking cruelty for no apparent reason, if the goal had been for blood to run through the streets then the Wahhabis would be suspect. But this attempted murder of a specifically targeted individual is not the Wahhabi style. It appears to be an authoritarian police state's attempt at intimidation.
Posted by: mary at September 26, 2005 03:50 PMIt's all part of the jihad - '...kill them (Infidels) wherever you find them.' Quran
Posted by: Pedestrian Infidel at September 26, 2005 04:12 PM- Mark, Mary,
Well, I’m not so sure we can exonerate the Wahhabis here.
Bush-proclaimed “leader of the new democratic Lebanon” [sic] is a sinister character named Saaduldînne a.k.a. Saad Hariri who holds Lebanese + Saudi dual citizenships.
Hariri’s chief of staff and election campaign manager is a notorious Wahhabi thug named Salim Diab: Mr Diab is also a member of the Lebanese branch of the ultra-fundamentalist “Muslim Brotherhood” cult (an organization that manufactured many mad killers including Al-Qaeda's Ayman Al-Zawahiri but I’m digressing), and he’s on the record for praising acts of terror specifically targeted at Christians and other “infidel crusaders”.
In May-June of this year, Salim Diab repeatedly called for Hariri sympathizers in North Lebanon to vote against “dirty kuffar pigs”
The Hariri mafia clan and their power hungry friends are clearly a bunch of dangerously racist Wahhabi stooges, which doesn’t seem to bother the Bush administration- last week, Dick Cheney and Condi Rice held extensive meetings with their “friend” Saad Hariri in New York.
Earlier this month, bloodthirsty war criminal Waleed Jumblatt said the following on Hariri’s Future TV:
“Our beloved friend martyr sheikh Rafik Al-Hariri, may Allah have mercy upon him, single-handedly defeated the 1982 Israeli-Lebanese treaty that president Reagan and evil Christian collaborators such as Basheer Gemayyel tried to impose on our Ummah...” [sic/sick]
In fact Rafeeq Al-Hariri was only 32 when the treaty in question was signed- he was living in Jeddah and wasn’t even remotely involved in Lebanese politics at the time...
Talk about anti-Lebanese historic revisionism on a MASSIVE scale!
Very frightening stuff anyway: at least Lebanon’s Christians and all authentic patriots are now officially warned about the Saudi-Druze lobby’s sinister intentions.
Posted by: Dr Victorino de la Vega at September 26, 2005 04:44 PMYes, "Dr. Dr Victorino de la Vega", you basically said the same thing at the Lebanese Bloggers' site.
Doha's response was:
Stop spreading [rumors], if you have any proof please produce it.
For your info, Salim Diab waws NOT responsible for North elections, he was only responsible for Beirut ones.
Again, I have to echo the words of bloggers who are more well-informed than I am. If you have any proof, please produce it.
...and if you have proof, show it to the Lebanese Bloggers. They're waiting.
Posted by: mary at September 26, 2005 05:35 PMVictorino,
Do you live in Mount Lebanon by chance? Or are you from there? Kesrouan or Sassine perhaps. Maybe Jounieh. That might explain a few things.
If I'm wrong, I am mightily curious where you are from.

You said/quoted:
“for your info, Salim Diab waws NOT responsible for North elections, he was only responsible for Beirut ones” [sic]
And that’s laughable: it’s as if you had said something like “Karl Rove was only in charge of the Bush campaign in Washington DC and had nothing to do with electoral strategy Ohio”!
- Michael,
I was born and raised in Norman, Oklahoma and I’m kind of an old school Bob Taft Republican
My father came from Monterrey in northeastern Mexico...not far for from the Texan border actually, hence my natural distaste for everything Dixie/Evangelical!
;)
No connection to mount Lebanon here except for a few ski outings: my grandparents came from the south of the country
I now live and work between (West) Beirut and Paris
Guess you now know the story of my life dude.

This is your idea of "proof"?
Most people (including people who have earned Doctorates) define proof as research, references and/or online links to these sources.
The only proof I've found of anything connected with this conspiracy appears to be provided by - you.
A quick google search reveals that you seem to be carrying out a one-man crusade to spread the conspiracy that Jumblatt & other Lebanese leaders are involved in some kind of Saudi inspired conspiracy to attack poor, pitiful, weak Syria. Most of your efforts seem to be devoted to defending the Syrian Ba'thist government by consistently implicating the Lebanese, the Saudis and "Israel's neocons" in America.
Although you imply that you're opposed to Islamists, you have also spoken out about the "IS-REALIZATION » OF THE WEST" while speaking up for the Islamist Guardian reporter, Dilpazier Aslam.
From what I've seen, I'm willing to guess that you're not a big fan of Democracy.
In your own words, you are Lebanese. At August 30, 2005 6:13 PM, Dr Victorino de la Vega said...If you're a proud supporter of Ba'thism, just come out and say so. You may as well, it's not like it's a big secret.
Ramzi,
First, for the record, I don’t live in a “powerful country far away” whatever that means!
I’m actually Lebanese, from the South-East of our groovy Jumhurrya for that matter, and I live in downtown Beirut: but anyway, an American blogger would also have the right to interject and criticize faux sheikh Saad and his cronies, as freedom of speech knows no boundaries be they ethnic and/or geographic.
Posted by: mary at September 27, 2005 06:29 AM
Victorino,
Sorry for being nosy, but...Christian or Shia? I'm just trying to figure out your angle here.
Posted by: Michael J. Totten at September 27, 2005 09:24 AM- Well my dear Mary I’m at loss for words…
Copying/pasting out of context cum disparate postings of mine doesn’t mean you’ve unearthed “internal contradictions” in my “system of thought” to use pseudo-scientific Trotskyite parlance- the kind of neo-vocab in vogue at the Pentagon and the National Review.
Has it occurred to you that I could be a US citizen of Lebanese descent?
Not all of us have ancestors that came to the New World on the Mayflower!
What you say about “the Baath party” shows you have absolutely no clue about the history of the Middle East and of its people: unlike the Marxist-leaning Syrian Baath party, the rightwing republican Iraqi Baath always stood with Washington against the USSR throughout the cold war.
Saddam Hussein has always been a staunchly secular/Christian-friendly Arab leader: this is the reason why he supported conservative Lebanese MPs such as Raymond Eddé in their forceful rejection of the unconstitutional Taef “agreement” imposed on Lebanon by gunpoint in 1989 by Saudi and Syrian thugs, while Wahhabi-phile luminaries such as George H. Bush and Jim Baker looked the other way.
Throughout the 1980s, Saddam Hussein together with the French government also supplied weapons and ammunitions to both the Christian Lebanese Forces and General Michel Aoun who were fighting a war of liberation against bloodthirsty Syrian occupation troops…that were “generously” financed by Saudi Arabia and Rafeeq Hariri until 2003!
Earlier this month, US ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad called the Iranian-inspired new Iraqi constitution "the most progressive document of the Muslim world"
I guess it depends on your definition of “progress”
Thanks to Bush and his neocon friends it will now be legal to stone women to death for adultery, Christians will be required to pay a specific tax (called “Jizya” or fiscal punishment), and cafes across Iraq will only serve lemonade and milk shake...
Secular and moderate Sunni Arabs such as Saddam who have ruled Iraq for the past thirteen centuries will have to abide the strictures of Persian-Shiite fundamentalist jurisprudence and will be treated as second class citizen in their own country- they might get consolation from being slightly above women and Christians in Iraq’s new “democratic” social hierarchy.
This is what we’ve come to 2 ½ years after the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq, a far away Middle-Eastern country that posed no threat to the West whether “imminent” or otherwise (remember Dick Cheney’s sci-fi army of Iraqi drones eager to nuke Cheyenne, Wyoming?): Iraq has now become a totalitarian Islamic Shiite Bantustan under the tutelage of its Iranian and Hebrew masters.
With all its faults, the Republic of Iraq under Saddam Hussein was probably the most progressive/secular country in the Arab world: 30% of members of government and high ranking civil servants were women (most of them wore no veil unlike their oppressed sisters in neighboring countries); the number 2 man in government was Tariq John Azeez, a devout Roman Catholic; most of Saddam’s senior advisers were Western educated Middle-Eastern Christians; and Iraq was the world’s third largest importer of Johnnie Walker whiskey!
- Michael, I guess by now you have the answer to your question
;)
Posted by: Dr Victorino de la Vega at September 27, 2005 04:07 PMVictorino,
You're Christian, as I figured initially.
Some of us Americans remember that many Lebanese Christians supported Saddam Hussein during the 1991 Gulf War. Those of us who do remember aren't very happy about it either. Get over him, he's not your pal.
Posted by: Michael J. Totten at September 27, 2005 04:29 PMDoc, "for all his faults" included a lot of mass graves and a lot of more-or-less effective genocidal policies. But it's always bracing to hear an apologist for someone like Saddam. It keeps one from getting too comfortable with his fellow humans.
No matter your murky provenance, now that you've told me the company you'd prefer to keep, I'd prefer not to keep yours. Thanks for the info.

An increasing number of old-school Taft Republicans and other true patriots are naming the Neocon conspiracy for what it is: a cabal of Pharisaic Marxists and Wilsonian fools eager to fight for Israel…until the last American GI dies in Arabia’s desolate quarter
Check out the following article by Michael Scheuer, a 22-year senior veteran of the CIA and the author of “Imperial Hubris: Why the West Is Losing the War on Terror”
http://www.antiwar.com/scheuer/?articleid=5690
“ Exporting freedom and democracy is not a Grand Strategy. It may be an ambition, an obsession, or – most likely – a hallucination. The idea that such exports are a "Grand Strategy" spotlights the ignorance about America of the men and women who today lead the country. Ditto for many of the 535 individuals in the Senate and House. America is not a nation meant to order others how to live and then push them at bayonet point into that lifestyle. The cost of such a policy, John Quincy Adams wrote, would be the loss of America's soul.
The force behind this Grand Strategy is President Bush's inane, ahistorical claim that "The survival of liberty in our land increasingly depends on the success of liberty in other lands." This is pure Wilsonian claptrap with the lethality-multiplying extra of being hands-on, rather than rhetorical Wilsonianism – the difference being that foreigners died from the latter, while Americans will die from the former. Mr. Bush, Mr. Rumsfeld, Ms. Rice, Mr. Cambone, Mr. Wolfowitz, Mr. Bolton, and their acolyte front organizations at the Weekly Standard, American Enterprise Institute, Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, etc., are not bad or evil people. They're just confused and ignorant about the meaning of America.
And, like Wilson, Bush is ill-served by some of his advisers, public and private. Wilson had House, Page, and Lansing, each of whom put British interests above American and pushed us into world war. Bush has Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, and Perle, who seem to conflate Israel's interests with America's and are pushing us toward a war with Islam. Indeed, U.S. elites across party lines bask in this American-killing conflation.
[…] Sadly, for America, the neocons and many Republicans differ from the Democrats only in that the latter are eager to teach democracy with the sword until there are U.S. casualties, then they run for the hills […] Americans should damn them, damn Wilson, and cull the strength to resist their plans from three things for which this crowd will never tumble: the Founders' timeless guidance, the traditional repugnance of Americans for bullies, and the innate common sense, insularity, modesty, and quiet patriotism of non-elite Americans. A presidential candidate for 2008 could do no better than talking to as many of these folks as possible, while systematically absorbing the Federalist and Washington's Farewell Address, and reading the essays of Congressman Ron Paul and Paul Craig Roberts ”

Posted by: at at January 31, 2006 03:04 AMNowadays, shopping at a sex shop for adult products has never been easier at a sex toy shop. Today you can browse through thousands of adult items: form lingerie, dildos, vibrators to sex toys, comparing each characteristics, prices and looking for the best choice for you. But is it really easy now to find exactly what you are looking for, receive it discretely and in a timely manner? Hence, we would like to offer you some helpful tips on adult products online shopping.
Sex Toys1. Start from the general information within the product category. Let’s say you are looking for vibrating dildos or vibrators. It is easy to be lost – so many different types, colors, styles and prices! However, you can find some educational sites as well as web forums on this subject. You can also explore all the different kinds of dildos and vibrators, including their functions, as well as feedback from other people who bought it. A piece of advice from somebody with a personal experience might help you to decide what exactly will be great for your pleasure.
Once you decided on a product, go ahead and browse through online “shelves”. There are so many online adult toy stores that sell dildos, vibrators as well as other sex toys on the web. Here is a tip – choose ones that have a nice and clean layout, a lot of info on each product and good pictures so you can see it in details. In the real world you would definitely prefer to shop in a clean and friendly atmosphere, why would you change your preferences? Don’t be shy to ask questions about the dildos and vibrators you want to buy – send it to them via e-mail. Here you don’t have to deal with a rude sales person making silly jokes about your choice…
Before placing your order go back to search engines and enter the exact name of the dildos and vibrators you are going to buy. You’ll be surprised – some stores might have the same items for less! Not talking about free shipping, spring sale and many other offers that they might have for you… so don’t hurry, shop around!
Erotic LingerieSexy lingerie is provocative, attractive and extremely appealing to the senses, especially for men. Men get turned on very easily by anything that is visually stimulating. Erotic Lingerie if chosen and worn correctly can titillate the senses and drive your partner wild! So, sexy lingerie is a sure way to get your partner fired up and coming back for more.
