Back Shortly...

Been out of town and busy. Back shortly.

Posted by Michael J. Totten at September 11, 2005 08:31 PM

When you're no longer busy, are you going to post an article that includes the refutations that have come to light of some of your earlier postings? First one could be the Wal-Mart one. Those water tanks were directed elsewhere...information that didn't come out until later.

As with war, there is a fog that surrounds initial reports coming from any disaster zone. As the fog lifts and more facts come out, initial conclusions should be adapted to fit the changed premises.

Initial outrage is understandable. We all felt it as we watched the desparate people in the Superdome. Those in the convention center were not even noticed by the press, including the Times-Picayune, until Wednesday evening.

Is it honestly so surprising that Chertoff didn't know about them on Thursday when the locals he was in communication with didn't either? The convention center was not mentioned in any of the disaster plans that the local agencies work from.

For a couple of days, the LANG was bringing trucks of food and water to the superdome. Tuesday afternoon Blanco said the place had to be evacuated instead of relieved. The Red Cross was not allowed into the city by the State DHS. (Their safety couldn't be guaranteed and local officials didn't want the aid to act as a magnet to keep people from evacuating.)

We were viewing NOLA as a hurricane relief operation which was entirely wrong. After the flooding it had become a Search and Rescue and Evacuation operation. The response is different.

Blanco was livid that the buses weren't there to evacuate the Superdome within hours of her call. They had to be arranged for, drivers gotten, gas tanks filled, and the route laid out. Besides which, they had to actually drive to NOLA. Some buses showed up as early as Wednesday night. By Friday, 1,100 buses were available for evacuation from the superdome and convention center. That's 72 hours from the initial request. Not a failure at all.

In the meantime here is an interesting article and blog from a former Green Beret who was prepared for the disaster in NO and is operating a large ISP in downtown New Orleans. They had a plan, and enough provisions for weeks. Check it out, interesting read.

It is also turning out that my original estimate that FEMA deserves a B for its efforts seems accurate. No, this federal organization is not perfect, but it is doing a good job. I refuse to take the MSM seriously. They are biased partners of the Democratic Party out to slime Republicans. It’s as simple as that. One should take everything they say with a huge grain of salt. This is particularly true of the New York Times.
