Note to Portland Locals

I don’t know about you, but I need a break from the horror show on CNN. And if, like me, you can’t wait to see Joss Whedon’s new Firefly movie Serenity, you can see it tonight at the Lloyd Center Cinema (1510 NE Multnomah Street) press screening at 7:00. I got my free pass already, but several haven’t been claimed yet. If you show up between 5:00 and 6:30 you can probably get one whether you’re a press person or not.

Who's Joss?

What's a Firefly movie?

What's Serenity about?

Take a break. Individual stories are not so oppressive. It's a tragedy, but I keep telling my family the news stories are the worst cases. Millions have evacuated. But most of us will be back. New Orleans will never be the same, but once in your blood, it never leaves you.

We all need a break from something. But a chance to see Serenity early? Oh, how I wish I were you.

Hope you enjoyed it. I got a chance to see a preview last week and I loved it. Some small quibbles, but overall it was just perfect.
The whole audience was awe-struck and silent by the end, and then in the best surprise ever, we got Sean Maher and Jewel Staite along for a question and answer session.

They were so very nice, and signed autographs for everyone in the audience.

I stopped watching news televistion after "surviving" the earthqueake in Seattle. The coverage was so overblown that I could no longer trust anything they put on the screen.

Posted by: Scott Janssens at September 2, 2005 06:54 AM

OK, that just annoys the heck out of me. I didn't read this until this morning, of course, and almost spit my coffee out on my laptop in shock. Damn.

I have to add my voice to Michael's and say that this is (was) probably the best science fiction TV series to come out -- ever. Right up there with the best TV series, regardless of genre. I just finished watching the box set with my girlfriend last Friday, and listen to The Signal podcast off iTunes.

My countdown, unfortunatly, is still set for September 30th -- 28 days away. A little earlier warning next time, eh Michael?

No, I'm not bitter.

I'm not ready to see "Serenity" yet, as I'm only now watching the orignial series' re-broadcasts on Sci-Fi channel (4 down). I think we'll have a good crowd to see the movie, tho', quite a few of my friends have joined up!

Yeah, it shouldn't be a surprise to any well-read and/or travelled type that MSM broadcasts are going to be overly maudlin and sensationalistic. Compare CNN with the excellent, 'guiliani-esque' posts from the Times Picayune. Bigger aint' better folks...

I went throurgh the Loma Prieta quake in 1989 and the media was twising itself into pretzels trying to dig up some misery. Sigh Does this aspect of your profession bother you at times, Micheal?
(hmm, that assumes you'd consider y'self a journalist. Do you, or do you think of y'sef as a writer?)

Michael, I probably forgot to thank you for posting about Firefly when you did (and thanks also to InstaGlenn, which is where I think I found the link to your post some weeks ago). So, FWIW - Thanks!!

We rented the DVDs via Netflix and my wife loved it so much that I have since purchased her the set. It's some of the most enjoyable television I've watched since the middle of the Babylon 5 series. I found it interesting that Battlestar Galactica (which is also excellent, IMHO) has copied Whedon's camera techniques.

What I find astounding is that neither my wife nor I can remember even ever hearing about Firefly back when it was on Fox. Not a single peep. We don't watch much network T.V. (mostly rented DVDs, Sci-Fi, Food Network and Discovery/History) but I do some fairly extensive channel-surfing every so often, and have no recollection of the series at all. Based on that data point, I'm not surprised it was cancelled - looks like they buried it from Day One, which is a damned shame.

Hope Serenity was all it could be. I look forward to seeing it at the end of the month, since I haven't yet seen anything about previews here in New England.

Thanks again!

Hope you had a great time watching Serenity. I'm still counting down to my chance to see it, 27 days now.

If you post a review, I'll make sure it gets linked in over at so it will get even more visibility; reviews from outside the entertainment biz and outside the MSM are especially appreciated. (And more visibility for your blog, of course!)
