What Katrina Wrought

Thank God New Orleans is still standing. The city is in absolutely horrid shape, probably the worst in its history. But it’s there. I was stunned numb when I heard meteorologists say there was a chance it could be destroyed. Cities aren’t supposed to be destroyed anymore. What is this, the Middle Ages?

There is no city in America I want to visit more than I want to visit New Orleans. I’ve been talking about how I need to go there for years, but I keep putting it off for no particular reason. It never would have occurred to me that I need to see that city (or any other city) before it gets wiped off the map. That’s supposed to be the stuff of bad Hollywood movies, not the Weather Channel.

Looks like it could be quite a while before I get down there. And it looks like some people can never go home there again.

UPDATE: It ain't over yet. Lake Pontchartrain is now spilling into New Orleans through a huge breach in the levee.

I grew up in Mobile, and spent many day trips in New Orleans, a short 2-hour drive from home. I've lived in Memphis for 13 years now, but I'll never forget the ferocity of what these storms can do. Words simply fail - it's staggering. I believe it will be weeks, not days, before they really know the toll. They can't get to all of the homes, they can't get to most of the attics yet, and the evacuees can't get back to direct anyone to the people who stayed. There will, I'm certain, be some that will never be accounted for - they won't be able to find the bodies. If the death toll doesn't reach the thousands, it will be nothing short of a miracle. I hate to be so macabre, but I spent a lot of my life down there, and that's just how it is, given the circumstances.

I'm sorry you didn't have a chance to go. NO is the only place my husband and I want to vacation; we try to spend a few days there every year. Like San Antonio and San Francisco, it was unique, and uniquely American. We are heartsick at the devastation. I ordered a couple of coffee-table books about the French Quarter and NO architecture yesterday from Amazon, in the despairing belief that photos are the only way we'll get to experience the city again as it was.

You never get the 'feel' of the situation from TV. Too large a scale and too much drivel. These 'small' photos brought the sadness of the disaster home to me. The man holding his flag beside the ruined house and the girl clutching her dog were particularly touching.

We all think we are 'masters of our domain',even though we know we are not. When NATURE shows us what forces really exist outside of our little personal worlds, it is truly humbling.

I don't think we realise that even those homes merely flooded with a foot or two of water are probably un-inhabitable for months at the least, and that hundreds of thousands of people have had their lives permanently altered overnight.

Very sad.

According to Brendan Loy's site, the cable news networks are doing a terrible job of reporting the news from New Orleans, but the local papers are doing their job.

CNN does have a list of aid agencies, though.

New Orleans is a wonderful city. I hope they'll be able to recover from this, and I hope they might move some of their treasured landmarks inland.

I used to live in a hurricane prone area (Cape May, NJ). We used to have a yearly flood (an area called Toad Hollow was the most vulnerable - we used that as a tourist parking lot).

About a hundred years ago, there used to be a South Cape May, but that town has been underwater for decades. Friends of ours had a seaside home, but they sold it because they were tired of cleaning up after flood damage. I don't know if it's global warming or something else, but the ocean seems to be moving inland. Even if we all stopped driving cars tomorrow, lived in harmony with nature and dressed ourselves in bannana leaves, this trend would not reverse itself. We're probably going to have to learn to live with things as they are, and give large bodies of water some breathing room.

Why are people rebuilding in New Orleans? What sense does that make? The city is significantly below sea level. It’s time for these folks to move our permanently! To be blunt, this tragedy should not have surprised anyone. The insurance companies are unlikely to continue subsidizing such reckless behavior---and neither should the United States government.

Too many modern people have an unreasonably exulted view of modernity's achievements. Atomic bombs, you say? Ha! The impact that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs was 10,000 times as powerful as all the atomic in the world put together! Mother nature laughs!

Very Sad. I also have wanted to visit NO for years, but have been unable. It is a city with a tremendous hertiage.

In 1900 a major hurricane hit Galveston, Texas. People moved to Houston immediately. The United States government did not fund those foolish enough to stay behind. How dumb is it to finance the rebuilding of New Orleans? It’s analogous to buying a new car for the teenager who has already crashed a couple of vehicles. Not only that, after giving the kid the keys---you then also hand him a quart of whiskey!

David Thompson: Where would you have everyone live, Utah? Yes, in 1900 a hurricane wiped out Galveston and people moved to Houston. In 2001 Allison flooded many parts of Houston and cost $5 billion plus to rebuild. Should Houston not have been rebuilt? Are people foolish to live in Houston?

From what I have read, a lot of the damage is due to the fact that the flood control/levee systems that have been put in affect the way that the delta is built up, so that it does not get the massive amounts of silt anymore. Because of this, the delta is slowly eroding, and thus not providing as much of a buffer between the Gulf and the city of NO as it used to. And thus storms like this cause much more damage.

It is a great town--but a tough one, too. I stayed at a nice hotel there once and was surprised to find police roaming the hallways the next morning. I asked what the deal was. Noting special, just a routine patrol.

You never thought you had to visit the city before it was gone?

Funny, I've had some friends who have said for YEARS that they had to visit New Orleans before a hurricane took it out. And actually, they were expecting worse than this.

Yes, worse.

It reminds me of a story I saw on the Discovery Channel a while back on the Netherlands. If you ask a Dutchman what the worst tragedy of the 40s was, he won't say Hitler's invasion and rule; he'll say the day the dikes broke.

And the sea washed half the country away.

A phrase I picked up somewhere (probably from Pratchett) is "That's why they call nature a mother."

Excuse me, that was 1953.

In February 1953 the Netherlands faced disaster when the dikes protecting the southwest of the country were breached by the joint onslaught of a hurricane-force northwesterly wind and exceptionally high spring tides. The flood came in the night without warning, a fateful combination of freak high tides and gale-force winds that killed 1,835 people. Almost 200,000 hectares of land was swamped, 3,000 homes and 300 farms destroyed, and 47,000 heads of cattle drowned. It was The Netherlands' worst disaster for 300 years.
