Returned to Sender

Many years ago I wanted to move to Canada. It wasn’t because I wanted to flee the United States or become an expat per se. I just wanted to live in Vancouver, British Columbia. It’s one of my favorite cities in the world, and it has been ever since I first saw it. It’s also only a five hour drive from my home town of Portland. I liked the idea that I could live in another country without really leaving the “neighborhood.”

I looked into the requirements for getting a residency permit. Two things on the list I would need to be able prove:

1) I had no criminal record. (Check.)

2) My presence in Canada would benefit Canadian society, even if only by an iota, rather than harm it.

Seemed reasonable enough to me. Why should they want me if I was only going to cause trouble? They have enough problems of their own without needing to import any brand new ones.

I never did move to Canada. But if I had moved there and declared my own personal war against the country and its people I’d expect to be railroaded straight back to the U.S. “Whoops,” an immigration officer surely would tell me. “Looks like both of us made a mistake. You apparently don’t want to be here any more than we want you to be here.”

So color me unsurprised that France decided to deport 12 radical imams for inciting jihad.

France is well within its rights. Inciting holy war – and in this context we’re talking about civil war – isn’t something to shrug at after New York, London, and Madrid. This isn’t a free speech issue.

Clearly France made a mistake when they granted residency status to those who want to destroy them. And clearly those immigrant imams made a mistake when they decided to settle in France. If Canada demands that I, a law abiding American citizen, should have to prove I will help rather than harm their country if they let me in... then slapping “Return to Sender” on their butts is the very least France ought to do.

Residence in or Entry into a Country other than the one in which you hold Citizenship is not a Right.

You are a guest, if you offend your host they
should have the right to ask you to leave.

Now if they'd only done this in 1978...

Just saying.

A Brit Jihadi talks about his views, in the UK Prospect Magazine.

Compelling. Read the whole thing. It's scary.

You'll see why folks are going to get deported rather quickly, and those native born will get interned or imprisoned.

Posted by: Jim Rockford at August 1, 2005 01:48 AM

I support Free Speech everywhere, but when non-natives practice it in one country to hurt that country -- deportation is fairly reasonable.

What will France do to home-grown radical France-haters, or Britain, or the US?

Deportation should be used, but the real problem is too little enforcement against actual criminal behavior -- like raping Muslim French girls or stealing from French protesters.

Same standards, NOT higher for whites/ natives -- but strongly applied. Meaning if one group has more rapists, that group will get a LOT more anti-rapist enforcement. (Many Europeans consider darker-skinned Gypsies and Arabs as "non-whites.")

One of the main reasons illegal Mexican immigration is relatively tolerated in the US is that the illegals commit fewer crimes -- to avoid the real big punishment of deportation.

"What will France do to home-grown radical France-haters, or Britain, or the US?"

Thats one of the main problems in Britain. The first significant waves of Muslim immigration happened in the 1960s and 1970s. By and large, since arriving here they've established themselves and gotten on with their lives. They may not be as well integrated as various waves of immigration to the US, but overall things haven't been that bad.

Their children are the main source of Islamism over here, providing recruits for AQ and its associates.

Posted by: sam at August 1, 2005 04:52 AM

I don't know, MJT.

How long did it take for the Canadians to rid themselves of Ernst Zundel?

Seems they have a rather high tolerance for incredibly awful/noxious behavior from immigrants.

Why stop at twelve? There are 100,000 of these bastards that support the bombers:

"Twenty-four percent of 500 Muslims responding said they sympathize with the suicide bombers. More troubling still, 6 percent said the attacks were necessary."

Obviously Spaniard raises an important issue. The problem goes deeper than the identifiable imams preaching their hate for the west. (and it should be no secret that I have no problem with booting them out). But it raises the question - who is their audience? Who has been going to the mosques and tolerating these hateful diatribes all these years?

I will venture a depressing scenario. Many people in the west, palpably since the London bombings, seem exremely perplexed and discombobulated about the emergence of Islmic extremism among the 2nd and 3rd generation Muslims of the west, because their parents were such model citizens and because it flies in the face of the very tenets of multiculturalism, which assumes the assimilation of successive generations of immigrants.

There are 2 plausible accounts for this phenomenon (well - 2 that I can discern from my readings around the web). One is best explained in this article by Reuel Marc Gerecht

Jihad made in Europe

which posits that radical Islamism as we're seeing it now is the equivalent of "born again Christianity" with a heavy dose of political Marxism mixed in (and Karl Jr. - I hope you will come back at some point and make your case that the "unholy alliance" between Islam and leftism is a fringe phenomenon, hardly worthy of our attention).

But a second plausible explanation (this is the depressing account) - would explain the rising levels of extremism among European Muslims as a sheer function of their growing numbers. As an expression, in other words, of the internal logic of jihad. The internal logic of jihad is based on the historical example of Muhammad himself. Make peace while you're in a position of powerlessness. As soon as the demographic numbers shift ever so perceptiby in your favor - follow the example of Muhammad in his Medina phase - and make war. Call it the tipping point theory. Islamic history, both past and future and everywhere even today - gives testimony to the latter hypothesis.

The latter hypothesis predicts that each successive generation of Muslims in the west - where demographics are on their side - will become more rather than less militant. Multiculturalism is a western idea. It doesn't confrom to the internal principles of Islamic jihad. Guess, we're about to find out which theory prevails - multiculturalism (with a temporary setback based on the 'rebellion' of a few disgruntled Muslim westerners temporarily aligning themselves with western Marxists, as Gerecht implies), or the age-old imperative of Islamic jihad.

Caroline,

Multiculturalism and assimilation are mutually exclusive. That's the whole point of multiculturalism - to herd immigrants into subcultures.

I have a Muslim friend from Syria who used to live in Europe. Said he was treated like a hated second-class citizen by almost everybody, and that NO ONE has ever treated him that way in the United States. He says the U.S. is Heaven and that Europe is Hell.

Posted by: Michael J. Totten at August 1, 2005 05:19 PM

With all due respect Michael, that is pure bullshit. Multiculturalism is not about "herding " anyone anywhere. It is about treating immigrants with respect as they assimilate - perhaps along the lines of your friend's experience in the US, as opposed to the attitude he seems to have encounterd in Europe - being a second-class citizen until one assimilates to the point of being indistinguishable from a local.

Posted by: IP at August 1, 2005 05:41 PM

IP: Multiculturalism is not about "herding " anyone anywhere. It is about treating immigrants with respect as they assimilate

That's what it should be. But that's not what it is.

I strongly recommed this article by Baharati Mukherjee in Mother Jones. She speaks about the fallout of multicultralism in both the U.S. and Canada from personal experience as an immigrant from India.

Posted by: Michael J. Totten at August 1, 2005 05:57 PM

Michael - I hear you. My brother went to boarding school in England from the age of 12 until he graduated from Oxford. He can talk a blue streak about how elitist the Europeans are behind their superficial multiculturalist 2-faced backs (he spent years as the hated "yank"). The blogger Fjordman, I believe it is, has revealed what really goes on behind "closed doors" in Europe and how classist the Europeans really are underneath.

I am also aware that American society is the opposite of classist and that in fact, that is precisely what makes us quintessentially American.

I know that assimilation and multi-culturalism are presumably not quite the same thing. Although I still imagine that even the multi-culturalists must have arrogantly imagined on some level that multiculturalism would have inevitably resulted in assimilation in the long run. Or else - what the hell were they thinking?? What bloody hubris was that? ("bloody" - a term I picked up from my British-schooled brother at a young age :-))

But, whether one puts one's faith in "assimilation" or multi-culturalism" - I think the bottom line for all western nations is that we need to slow it the hell down! I have seen some figures that suggest that what is currently going on in the west is the largest migration of peoples in almost 1,000 years. It isn't merely an issue of deporting a few radical imams. The truth is that we have no clue about what we are dealing with facing the largest migration into the west in 1,000 years (over just a few decades).

The American insistence on "assimilation" (but what's with my telebanking and my cable company?)is no doubt a step up from what the Europeans have been doing for 30 years but that is no reason to be complacent. In fact, we have the great luxury of watching what happens to Europe - like watching the mistakes an older sibling makes. Frankly, it looks to me like my big sister is in trouble! If we hurry too much, without heeding Europe's lessons, then we run the risk of losing forever one of the best things we have going for us as a nation - the ability to say:

"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

The radical imams are NOT "yearning to breathe free". Rather they seek to enslave every single one of us. We can't sell what we have to offer like a 2 bit whore to everyone who wants to screw us! We need to protect ourselves!

(Oh man - this metaphor (from the Queen of the Bad Matephors) could get downright ugly so this is definitely a good time to stop...:-))

Where I stand on all this? To sum up the next step in the WOT, especially given that Plan A - the democratization of Iraq - may be a massive failure and wind up creating a close sister state of Iran?

On to Plan B: Cease Muslim immigration to the west NOW. It's not racist. It's not cruel. We had a 40 year moratorium on open immigration until 1965. Time to end it for now while we pause to take stock. IMHO it's the most humane next step. My primary interest is in avoiding preventable bloodshed. What is stopping us from doing this?

Posted by: Caroline at August 1, 2005 06:05 PM

That's what it should be. But that's not what it is.

Exactly. That's why the Left now promotes the "salad bowl" instead of the melting pot-- because asking them to assimilate is "racist".

Posted by: spaniard at August 1, 2005 06:06 PM

I have to agree with IP. Herding immigrants into subcultures isn't the point of mulitculturalism.

However, it is the inevitable result of multiculturalism.

The point of mulitculturalism is to alleviate leftist guilt and to allow them to deny they are or ever have been racists or bigots.

Posted by: mary at August 1, 2005 06:13 PM

Australia refers to a multi culti society as a "mixed salad" where parts retain their individual tastes as opposed to assimilationist "melting pots."

The problem with multi-culti is that by its nature it means you cannot hold objective values as you always need to use cultural relativity...but in real life societies have to make decisions that will not allow cultural relativity....

female infanticide, female circumcision, okay these are easy...how about honor killings? easy. How about females not being let out of the house? Or female education?

Dan Kauffman: Re: "Residence in or Entry into a Country other than the one in which you hold Citizenship is not a Right."

Unfortunately, in Canada, both the government and the Supreme Court have decided that is almost a right. Someone only has to arrive and say "I am a refugee" and it is practically impossible to remove that person given the innumerable hearings and appeals available - all at taxpayer expense.

As SoCalJustice stated above - look at the example of Ernst Zundel and the years it took to remove him.

Posted by: John B at August 2, 2005 07:34 AM

MJT: Multiculturalism and assimilation are mutually exclusive. That's the whole point of multiculturalism - to herd immigrants into subcultures.

Hmm. Strange. You say Vancouver is one of your favorite cities, yet you opine the above.

Vancouver is arguably one of the most multicultural cities on Earth. The directions to the washrooms in my kid's elementary school are in English and Chinese. They celebrate Chinese New Year in the schools. We have special rules regarding helmet laws and police uniforms to accomodate turbans. There are entire shopping malls where you will not hear English spoken.

As an immigrant myself, I'd say that your assertion that multiculturalism is aimed at herding is somewhat off-target. A multicultural society forms a stronger culture, and embraces respect and tolerance. For example, from the article linked to above:
Vancouver has a bustling music and art scene, one of the largest gay communities in North America. The city is relatively free of racial tension; every ethnic group is represented in every social class. One result is a relatively high rate of intermarriage; trans-ethnic couples are unremarkable in any neighbourhood.
To some minds, those are weak attributes. I'm pretty sure you're not one of them. Posted by: double-plus-ungood at August 2, 2005 01:32 PM

I think I'm going to have to agree a little bit with ++ug. As a lifelong resident of Toronto, which is way more multicultural than Vancouver (cheap shot at my countryman above), I can say that a multicultural society can work, but you have to be careful.

There was a series of articles recently in the Toronto Star about the rise in number of ethnic enclaves in Toronto; place where one can go days only hearing Chinese, or Punjabi, or Tamil, or whatever. Your neighbours are from the old country, there are stores that carry foods and other goods, and you don't have to venture too far outside very often. It's important to note these aren't the ghettoes of Western Europe (like the citées of Paris that Michael blogged about a while back). They tend to be middle class subdivisions that are dominated by one ethnic group.

So is this a terrible thing? No. A bad thing? Yes. These aren't the sort of places where radical ideologies are fomented due to resentment of the new country. OTOH, are these people actually being integrated into the larger culture? The answer is no. Mind you, this largely applies to the adults. The kids are at school, mixing with others, playing hockey, that sort of thing.

Multiculturalism is not necessarily antagonistic to integration (which I’m assuming is a worthy goal), but as we’ve seen in Europe, it’s very easy for that situation to arise. I’m not saying that we’ve got it all figured out up here, but it does work. Of course, the reverse is also true; integration is not necessarily antagonistic to multiculturalism. The USA is a good example of this, with a culture that is far more multicultural than it is generally given credit for.

Posted by: Dave Ruddell at August 2, 2005 08:42 PM

Quite right, and not because all Muslim immigration to Europe is bad either. But Europe needs to focus on integrating the Muslims it has, and that involves setting the proper tone politically and making demands on Muslim communities there in exchange for the (considerable) benefits they get from living in Europe. Refraining from preaching holy war against the society they live in would be reasonable demand #1.

Probably lowering immigration #s would be a helpful step toward assimilation too, but have to wonder how practical that is?

Posted by: MQ at August 2, 2005 09:17 PM

I think I'm going to have to agree a little bit with ++ug. As a lifelong resident of Toronto, which is way more multicultural than Vancouver...

Hey, is not. We have 37% visible minorities. You guys have only 36%. Nyah.

Although, as a former resident of Trinidad, I am deeply jealous of your sizeable West Indian community.

Posted by: double-plus-ungood at August 3, 2005 08:22 AM

Actually, last I saw, we were claiming 45% or so. But I've always loved that term 'visible minority'. Does that mean there are invisible minorities? Who are they? Gays? Mormons? Trekkies?

Posted by: Dave Ruddell at August 3, 2005 12:38 PM

Who are they? Gays? Mormons? Trekkies?

Yup. I guess we're all minorities in some undistinguishable ways. I, for example, am one of the few people who are never wrong. But you couldn't tell that just by looking at me.
