Muslims Against Terror

Chan’ad Bahraini, blogging from Bahrain, posted a photo gallery of a demonstration against terrorism in front of the British Embassy. (Hat tip: Instapundit.)

A few photos jumped out at me:

100_5889.jpg

100_5893.jpg

100_5896.jpg

When I visited Rafik Hariri’s grave site in downtown Beirut a local man explained to me how moving it was to see candles placed in front of his coffin. The reason was because candles, at least in Lebanon, are explicitly Christian. They are not a part of the Muslim tradition. Rafik Hariri was a Sunni Muslim. And so it was shocking in a good way, or so I was told, for Muslims to see Christians lighting candles for him.

I don’t know if it means anything in particular that Muslims in Bahrain specifically used candles to show their solidarity with the people of Britain. Perhaps candles don’t mean the same thing in Bahrain as they do in Lebanon. I really don’t know. In any case, it obviously means a great deal that Bahraini Muslims feel a sense of solidarity with Christian victims of Islamic terrorism.

We owe it to them to take note and not shrug our shoulders. We are obligated for the same reason Muslims in the Middle East ought to note that the United States took the side of the Muslims – not the Christians – in the sectarian civil war that tore the former Yugoslavia to pieces. (We didn’t take their side because they are Muslims. We took their side because the Orthodox Christian regime of Slobodan Milosovic was unspeakably barbarous.)

Only 100 or so people attended the event in Bahrain. That isn’t very many, and I do wish the number were higher – a lot higher. It is worth pointing out, though, that Bahrain is a miniscule country and that only 453,237 people who live there are Bahraini nationals. That’s roughtly the size of the metro area of Des Moines, Iowa. If you want to see a million people march against terrorism, you aren’t going to see it in that little country.

This reminds me of something a military friend of mine told me a couple of years ago. He was briefly stationed in Bahrain. One day he went shopping in one of the downtown malls wearing his uniform. An elderly Arab man - a total stranger - wearing traditional flowing white clothing approached him unbidden, gave him a hug, and said "I am so so sorry about September 11." It was all my friend could do not to break down in tears. He has only the kindest sweetest things to say about the people who live in that country.

Weren't there also a few Muslim victims of the London bombings? Could the Bahrainis have primarily been expressing sympathy with their own? In the end, it doesn't matter. Either way, it's a moving tribute.

Almost the only fun I had during my tour in GW1 was in Bahrain. Some guys from my company went there in a convoy to drop some cargo and when they got back they said it was a really neat place, especially because drinking was legal. We were stationed in Saudi Arabia and hadnt drank a beer in about 4 months.
A couple days later a buddy of mine somehow got some fake documents that gave us permission to enter Bahrain. The documents were a total joke but we hoped that the border guards would just wave us through not wanting to bother with us or not understanding english writing. Anyway 3 of us snuck out of camp one night and caught a cab to the airport. We rented a car and drove over to Bharain. We were worried about getting turned away at the border because our papers were pretty pathetic, I think they were photo copies of actual orders to some other Army personel, my papers said I was a colonel which was really stupid considering I was only 20 at the time. We ended up at a couple bars and a club called the Desert Dome. It was a really cool place for us because there isn't anything like that in S.A. where we had been for months. The thing I remember most is an early eighties camero driving past us as we were walking. The driver and passengers were in full white gowns with the red and white head dress. The car was bright orange with black racing stripes and T-Tops. The rear end was all jacked up with air shocks and everything. I can remember thinking what the hell is this car doing here. As they drove past I yelled watch ya got in that thing a 350? The driver turns and says "400 man". Then he did a huge peel out and almost crashed because he was looking back at us for reaction. We laughed so hard we almost fell over. The driver laughed too as he drove away. I remember thinking wow, these guys are a lot like us in some ways after all.

Great story. Isn't it amazing what a little freedom can do to improve a society? Perhaps there is real hope for Iraq and the rest of the ME. I'd light a candle for that!

>>>"Only 100 or so people attended the event in Bahrain."

Yes, too few. These must be the one out of a million moderate muslims we keep hearing about, but rarely see. Contrast that with the muslims that took to the streets in great numbers worldwide after the Koran desecration story-- these people are not shy about showing their displeasure when it suits them.

It does not escape our notice in the West that terrorists killing in the name of that same Koran barely raises an eyebrow in the muslim world. We're being had.

Posted by: spaniard at July 11, 2005 08:23 PM

We owe it to them to take note and not shrug our shoulders.---MJT

I'm not exactly shrugging my shoulders, but I'm not really turning cartwheels either.

100 people in an admittedly SMALL, decadent Western-corrupted State is kind of miniscule . Perhaps the news hadn't arrived fully yet.

On a related note, and I don't have the link at my fingertips, CNN had a web story after the London bombings detailing Muslim reactions. As usual it tried to point out how the vast majority of Muslims were outraged by the atrocities. Outraged I say.

However when you read the fine print, it did not seem to be outrage per se. It seemed more akin to 'tactical' annoyance. It was not RIGHT for these radicals to bring Islam into disrepute, and upset the situation in Europe which was going so well for its Muslim population. I mean the cruel Crusaders and the evil JOOS do these things, but Muslims don't abuse and attack the innocent. Yeah ---- Right !!!

Sorry, I remain unconvinced that there is a 'Reformation' on the near horizon in the Islamic World. Very unconvinced.

Better Late Than Never--- Arab Reactions To London

Posted by: dougf at July 11, 2005 09:23 PM

Michael,
The Bahrainis have experienced quite a lot of terror in the last month.
First, their envoy to Baghdad was kidnapped.
Then, there was a big bomb scare at an auto show.

Another thing to remember, the Crown Prince of Bahrain was one of the first Arab (and a Muslim) to meet with President Bush after 9/11.

Bahrain is also where Coke's Mideast headquarters is located. You don't get much more American than...

Posted by: lebanon.profile at July 12, 2005 12:57 AM

Well, the attitude towards modernity in the West by Muslims is not always positive.

http://csmonitor.com/2005/0711/p01s04-woeu.html

"We don't need to fight. We are taking over!" he said. "We are here to bring civilization to the West. England does not belong to the English people, it belongs to God."

"Hours after the bombings, Helbawi logged onto an Internet chat room run by British Muslim extremists. "They were all congratulating each other on the attacks," he said. "It was crazy. They were talking about how they had won a great victory over the infidels, as if they had just come back from a battle."

Although so far, there is no evidence that British Muslims were involved in the bombs, there is little doubt that many British Muslims feel that Britain "deserved" the attacks for supporting the US invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan."

"Last month, Muslim groups in Glasgow petitioned the City Council to ban an Italian restaurant from serving alcohol to diners seated at outside tables. Hospitals in Leicester considered banning Bibles from hospital wards to avoid offending Muslim patients. In Birmingham, a group called Muslims Against Advertising began a campaign of painting over billboards that they deemed offensive to Islam - targeting ads for Levi's jeans, perfume, and lingerie.

But these small campaigns are polarizing public opinion along ethnic and religious lines - and creating support for Britain's far-right groups, who present themselves as defenders of Britain's hard-won freedoms."
-------------------------
Really, read the whole thing. Very interesting. While it is good that Bahrainis have condemned this specific attack, various hate preachers spew out all sorts of things throughout the Gulf including Bahrain. "Eyes of Zahra" alleging "the Jews" steal Palestinian kids organs including eyes to keep "evil/aging" Israeli leaders alive.

That this would even take place says volumes, it's a positive step, but may indeed be too late.

The problem is IMHO Islam itself, which really has not changed much at all in a thousand years. Spain that most Catholic of countries legalized gay marriage. That alone shows the gap between the modern, ever-changing West and Islamic society stuck in amber. It's even worse in that it's not explicitly a national ideology, or racially based where the interests of the nation/group over-ride tradition as in Japan's shocked adoption of modernity when the Black Fleet steamed into Tokyo Bay.

There's been discussion in the WSJ and elsewhere by UK Muslims (including the documents released by the Sunday Times detailing confidential reports to Tony Blair's cabinet on Muslim attitudes). Islamicists say you cannot be both part of the Ummah and British; each excludes the other. This increasingly seems the attitude of second or third generation Muslims in the UK, particularly young professionals who have economic advancement (it's not the result of discrimination).

The reason this scares me is that Thomas Friedman is partly right (I know he's often an idiot but even a broken clock is right twice a day). Unless Muslims particularly in the West provide no space for the Finsbury Park extremists like Abu Hamza, no more "celebration of the Magnificent 19" or Sept. 11, no more Tarik Ramadan, there will be little support in the West which is decidedly secular for continued Muslim presence.

It seems to me that since the late sixties when the PLO blew up airliners in Amman as a TV stunt (they were empty), Muslim terrorists have been escalating the violence (and Leftist apologists have been appeasing them in one form or another) as the West has ignored them (ala Clinton and most other US Presidents going back to Nixon) or responded half-heartedly (Europe). Eventually, there's a limit and it's likely nuclear.

Even the French who were bled dry in two World Wars will fight and fight ferociously if they lose say, Paris to a nuclear attack. Let alone the UK or US response to losing London, NYC, Washington DC and Boston to such an attack.

I don't think Islam in it's present form can continue to exist in the West; it will have to change to something akin to Christianity (existing "in a box" of internal life that does not affect life outside the home) or Muslims will simply be expelled.

Posted by: Jim Rockford at July 12, 2005 01:09 AM

100 people was a small turnout - but not insignificant. The vigil was supported by the Al-Wefaq Islamic Society, which is probably the largest political/religious society in Bahrain. The head of the Society Ali Salman was present with the a number of pastors from the various churches around the island, and that's a big deal. This is a change and a change for the better..

You are fighting a war against terrorism, we are fighting a war against ignorance and the loss of our religion. The 'popular' attitude towards islam is to not question anything... many scholars in the more oppressed states have pushed religion to the point where it's brainwashing.. This is what we have to deal with: the death to America chants, the anti-christian anti-west... why? because these people have been spoon fed religion and asked to forget all rational thought. Like I said, things are changing, but it takes time..

There's talk of more planned vigils and demonstrations against terrorism... i'm hoping a stronger voice will be heard...

Maybe its time to replay all that footage of the american and british press cheering the bombing of Iraq? (plenty of video tape evidence for this)

You only care what they think when it suits you! You only look at and study their reaction when something happens to western people!

Where was the analysis of their reaction when "shock and awe" was raining from the skies?

Or what they feel when we back up a brutal leader becasue it suits us?

Or how they feel about americans torturing their friends and families?

Were we, perhaps, too busy cheering?

The iraqi prisoners on the forklift dont seem so funny now, do they?

"The problem is IMHO Islam itself, which really has not changed much at all in a thousand years."

1) This Daniel Pipes post, noting its propensity to be subject to too much change, too readily morphed.

2) This set of english language Matthias Kuntzel posts, noting how its more virulent forms of anti-Semitism were engendered via alliances with Hitler's National Socialism and other European roots, largely imported during the period of the early 1930's through 1945. After going to the link click on one of the following four posts:

a) Jihadism and anti-Semitism
b) Islamic Antisemitism And Its Nazi Roots
c) National Socialism and Anti-Semitism in the Arab World
d) European Roots of Antisemitism in Current Islamic Thinking

Dhimmitude has been around since the beginning, so to at least some extent the concern is warranted. Also, both the above points reflect changes for the worse, not the better. Thus again, lending comprehension to the necessity of applied force. An external force to counterbalance the internal forces until internal changes for the good can begin to gain a foothold and make advances.

Posted by: Michael B at July 12, 2005 12:41 PM

> There are many different Islams.

This is a truth not recognized by many commenters (not just here, but libertarian samizdat, WoC, etc.). Half of my family are Subud, an Indonesian variant of Sufism that has far more in common with Quaker/Unitarianism than with the Salafism and Qutbism that provides the fundamental philosophical justification for Islamist terror. I can assure you that my relatives are just as horrified (perhaps more so, since it's a corruption of their faith) about Wahabbism as any other American. My uncle, a devout and fundamentally good man, went to the new mosque in D.C. built with Saudi money and was appalled by what he saw and heard.

Sure, it's an easy mistake for casual blog readers to make, lumping in a billion worshippers and multiple sects into one big problem, particularly given that these monsters wrap themselves in and justify their atrocities with the Koran, the appalling sermons of many (anti-western, state sponsored) imams, now brought to light by Memri.org, lgf and other sites. It's important to know that some Muslims are incompatibly anti-Western. But it is still an error to think that all Muslims are.

How much of what Westerners find most atrocious about "Islam" (the inegalitarianism, the racism/slavery, the random violence, etc.) is cultural, rather than religious? Not all practicing Muslims interpret the admonition to dress modestly as severely as in rural Afghanistan (that creepy head to toe, grill over eyes thing) or as loosely as in Djakarta (miniskirts and go-go booted Islam), for a simple example. Of course the Koran can be used to justify all manner of horror, as can the Old and New testaments - I don't think that's really the issue.

It would be unthinkable for most readers, I think, if all of Christiandom was judged as basically morally equivalent to the Sniper(s) for Jesus (the people who shoot abortion doctors in the name of their interpretation of the New Testament), or the death camps run by Orthodox Christians in the former Yugoslavia, right?

I guess where I wanted to go with this is that there are moderate Muslims and pro-Western Muslim culture/sect/people, and if there is to be a sustainable resolution to the conflict(s) between Islam and post-enlightenment modernism, rather than endless or worse, final conflict, the moderates need our support. It's hard to change religions, but cultures can experience rapid change over relatively short periods of time. So only a hundred Bahrainians lit candles? It's a start, and still far better than darkness.

Posted by: GeneThug at July 12, 2005 01:15 PM

Michael -- while yes Wahabbism is awful, look at Islamic countries: Iran, Saudi, Pakistan, Egypt, Sudan, Yemen, the Gulf Countries, North Africa, much of Africa, Central Asia, and Southwest Asia.

In all of these countries save a thin veneer of westernized coastal elites in Lebanon, Western Turkey, and urban Malaysia/Indonesia, we find the following:

*Islam as the answer for "all things" instead of existing "inside a box" of personal spiritual actions as in the West.

*Severe restrictions on Women. Not all places impose the Burqa but all fall more or less Sharia which establishes Women as second class citizens. Iran stones 13 year old girls to death for being raped. It's explicitly an Islamic Republic. The same happens in Nigeria, Yemen, and Pakistan. Shia and Sunni both do this.

*Severe restrictions on religious and ethnic minorities. See women above.

*Anti-intellectualism. The Arab Bank in 2000 surveyed the Arab countries (the spiritual and cultural heart of Islam, note the Koran is generally NOT translated into the vernacular but rather Arabic taught as Islam holds that Arabic is the language God speaks, the Arab world is good thumbnail hence IMHO of the Islamic World); and the results were not pretty. Patents, technical education, manufacturing, scientific research were almost nil. Hard to become part of modernity while you're stuck in Madrassas memorizing the Koran. Which is what passes for education in the Muslim world.

*Repression of free expression.
*Lack of civil society. Islam allows for religious organizations, but things like the ACLU, Sierra Club, NRA, Kiwanis, trade unions, and the like don't exist in the Islamic World.

Probably the easiest way to see the failure of the Islamic World is to compare them to South Korea, Taiwan, Coastal China, and Japan which were devastated after wars and built up from literally nothing. In each of these countries there is prosperity far higher than the Muslim World, based not on resource extraction but value added goods for export. There is no Muslim Samsung, Toyota, Honda, Levovo, or APIC. I can't even conceive of a world-beating company in say, "moderate" Tunisia which is stable and across the Med from large export markets. In no Muslim country does there exist a robust commercial sector of world beating technology or value or research. Which speaks volumes of the Muslim's worlds total failure to adopt modern values.

I would argue that the universalist, utopian end state of Islam (which has some good things about it) has led to total stagnation in these critical areas and a very dangerous attitude (I'm with Belmont Club's Wretchard on this one). Look at the attitudes in the PA (again like 9/11 celebrating the London attacks) or in London itself:

http://www.memri.org/bin/opener_latest.cgi?ID=SD93205

That the Director for Historical Studies would claim that there are no civilians, that Al Qaeda did not bomb London but "the Jews" or GWB or other scapegoats did it, but if Al Qaeda did it was a great victory, and that Margaret Hassan and Ken Bigley were not murdered is indicative of the problem. A refusal to face reality, excuse making, saying one thing to Westerners and others to your domestic audience, and a total refusal to condemn the crazy jihadis, instead celebrating them.

This is a "moderate Muslim" living in the West. Dependent on the West's goodwill for his residency.

Islam is broken because it still remains the way it was when the Prophet slaughtered his way across Arabia. Nothing really has changed and a warrior religion that explicitly states that all areas are regulated by Islam which is destined to bring about a universal state of submission to God (I guess Lenin cribbed from the Prophet) is simply incompatible with the modern world. Note the fellow above explicitly rejects nationalism for the Ummah.

It isn't just Wahabbism. Or Shias. Or Qutbists. Or the importation of European anti-Semitism (all of which are serious problems). It's that Islam when faced by massive cultural contact by the modern West acted not like Asian countries which adopted for better or worse most of Modernity has basically looked to various "magic swords" to defeat/destroy the West, hence bin Laden vowing to reconquer "Al Andalus" which has been gone from Spain for 500 years.

EVERY religion has it's crazies. In the West they're David Koresh lunatics who end up dead or imprisoned like Manson or the Aum Shin Ryko leader. Within Islam they end up heroes.

The obvious difference is that these actions are not accepted by "mainstream Christianity." You don't see thousands of "mainstream Christians" in the streets celebrating every time an abortion clinic is bombed. That is the 800 pound gorilla that is continually ignored, at least publicly, in this struggle. Unfortunately, the administration has to "play by the unwritten rules", because that is the system that we have here; if President Bush actually "told it like it is" he would get no cooperation at all from the Democrats, because of their PC fears.

Did thousands take to the streets after the London bombings? If so, where? The only people I know of who ever behave that way are Palestinians. You cerainly won't see that kind of crap in Beirut, Tunis, or Istanbul.

"I am surprised. If they are UK born, surely they must have seen the thousands of Londoners marching in protest against the War in Iraq back in 2002 and 2003. Why would they kill those same people?"

Just could not resist giving this gem a bit wider distribution. I encountered it while slumming at the BBC today.

I am surprised... . Pretty much says it all, I fear. A whole collection of Homers whose lifestyle and values are built upon sand and whose only fallback position is D-O-H.

Posted by: dougf at July 13, 2005 05:58 AM

I very much agreee with your post, except for the following, which is really one dimensional.

We are obligated for the same reason Muslims in the Middle East ought to note that the United States took the side of the Muslims – not the Christians – in the sectarian civil war that tore the former Yugoslavia to pieces. (We didn’t take their side because they are Muslims. We took their side because the Orthodox Christian regime of Slobodan Milosovic was unspeakably barbarous.)

first there were three major sides - ALL of whom engaged in unspeakable barbarity -- in that conflict. Also you naming the Moslems and Orthodox Christians but leaving out the Catholics, who as you wil recall were led by a fanatical, murderous, unreconstructed fascist.

Posted by: Dave at July 13, 2005 07:42 AM

I also don't recall any Catholic leaders in America speaking out against the atrocities commited by the Croatians, nor any marches by American Catholics denouncing Tudjman. Does that mean there are no moderate Catholics? Obviously not.

Posted by: vanya at July 14, 2005 12:48 PM

>exhelodrvr: "The obvious difference is that these actions are not accepted by "mainstream Christianity."

exhelodrvr, pardon my delay in response (the lab comes first). My initial response is to argue semantics with you over the term "mainstream" - e.g., didn't sympathetic pro-life locals shelter and support the Christian bomber of woman's clinics and gay nightclubs, Eric Rudolph, in his community for years? Were there large Christian demonstrations against the democide of Muslims by a nation of Orthodox Christian Serbs that I missed (I remember anti-war demonstrations in the US, but those would've been functionally pro-democide, wouldn't they)?

But this sort of back and forth oneupsmanship is unproductive. Is it realistic to expect that there would be Christian marches against Rudolph or the Serbs? I think most people I know thought of the whole Serbian thing as political/ethnic rather than religious conflict, and that Rudolph was a psychopath whose insanity expressed itself through religion. How much more unreasponable is it to expect more Muslims to march against extremist muslim violence when they're far more likely to be targets of it?

I don't want to put words in your mouth, but I think you're suggesting that the full blown psychosis of Palestinian and Salafist terroristm is somehow "mainstream" Islam, that terrorism enjoys broad "mainstream" support throughout the Islamic countries, even in places like Turkey and Indonesia? Here we must disagree, I think, though I might feel the same way, reading the blogs and news, if I didn't know any Muslims I felt comfortable discussing these issues with. Have you talked with any Muslims about this? As I said, I think a lot of the social/political/cultural pathologies middle east are ancillary to Islam. Socialism, corruption, totalitarianism, racism, gender apartheid aren't particularly Islamic per se, anymore than the biblical justification for apartheid that was preached in South Africa was particularly Christian, but I can see how it's easy to lump the whole mess together under that rubric.

As a numeratist/empiricist argument, there are ~2 million Palestinians (assuming for the sake of argument that they've all joined the "death cult", and perhaps 200,000 active Al-Qaedists by a rough estimate, out of a total population of about a billion Muslims, or ~0.22%? That's a pretty broad generalization. Even if the extremists have a few million active supporters, that number is dwarfed by the number of Muslims who are merely trying to live their lives. If the estimated number of active muslim terrorists/symps was off by, say an order of magnitude, wouldn't you expect there to be far more terror than we've seen since Bin Laden's jihad against the West was declared? On the other hand, perhaps you're more concerned than I am about people's (largely passive) anti-Western sympathies than their actions. That's fair, though I still think that in practice, most of the popular Anti-Westernism is due to decades of State propaganda rather than formal religious injunction (consider the popular attitudes towards the West in Turkey vs. Egypt or Saudi Arabia, for example).

Lastly, I want to point to wretchard's latest post looking to an internal solution to Muslim extremism (http://fallbackbelmont.blogspot.com/2005/07/al-jadida.html) and an article regarding the "curing" of terrorists through a correct interpretation of Islam via spiritual argument http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/0204/p01s04-wome.html . Wishful thinking? Perhaps. But again, it would be best for both parties, I think, if the Islamic problem has an Islamic solution - aided by diplomacy's alternative when necessary. If, as you seem to argue, Islam is the problem, we'll look back fondly on these troubled times, I think.
