Remembering Samir Kassir

The bastards are still active in Beirut.

Samir Kassir - a founding member of Lebanon’s Democratic Left movement and a prominent anti-Syrian journalist for An-Nahar newspaper, was murdered – assasinated - by car-bomb in Beirut, almost certainly by Syrian security agents.

Samir is the first person I have known personally who has been murdered by terrorists. I met him several times when I was in Beirut, twice in the Democratic Left’s headquarters, and once again at a rally. I sat right across from him at a table in that headquarters - as an observer, of course. I can’t say I was scared when I was in Lebanon. I wasn’t, and I wished my wife could have gone with me. But when I sat across from him at those meetings I did feel a bit like I was in the line of fire. I guess I was right.

I can’t say I knew him well, but I did know him. On the surface at any rate, he was a kind, gentle, warm, and welcoming person. Now that he’s dead I will not forget him. When I saw his face in the New York Times I felt like I had been punched in the stomach.

My friend LP at the Lebanese Political Journal (may he not be hit with a car bomb) is outraged at this atrocity.

We're not asking for bread on every plate. We're not asking for the oligarchs to give back their money. We just want the shadow authorities to take their boots off of our necks.

Samir dedicated his professional and his private life to ending tyranny in his country. He was an activist as well as a journalist – an honorable combination in an oppressed country like Lebanon – and he died for his efforts.

My condolences to his family and his country.

UPDATE: See Michael Young's obit for Samir in Reason. Michael, also, is a journalist in Beirut - he's the opinion page editor at The Daily Star. I met him while I was there, too, and he told me he can get away with criticizing Syria and its spooks because he writes in English rather than Arabic. I hope, for his sake under the circumstances, that he's right about that.

This terrorism has provoked an outpouring of anger against Syria. If their goal was to silence people, it had the opposite effect.

I didn't realize you met with the Democratic Left while here.

I am friends with one of Samir's children.
I met with Hariri's children within days after their father's death.

For someone who always has a lot to say, I can never find the words.

Sadly, these attacks don't look like they are going to end soon.

I am far more optimistic. This murder may represent an end to an era. The thugs realize that they will not return to power. Lebanon, hopefully, has reached the tipping point stage where democracy is now inevitable.

Lib.prof -- I'm afraid you're right on car bombs. Until democracy is more entrenced in the culture, and even then an Ok. City bombing, or other nutcase, is possible.

But murdering specific anti-Syrian folk increases the anger and the fear -- what effect with it have on actions?

Shelly has (and had) no problem with me going to Lebanon. If she did not own a business and needed to stay in Portland she would have gone with me. I will go back to Lebanon as a tourist, and she will go with me. She has lived abroad in the past, and has visited far more dangerous places than Lebanon for fun. She isn't a coward or a "princess."

I commented on the elections in the South on my site. I also went on an all out attack against Hezbollah.
The election law guaranteed that Hezbollah/Amal would win. It made it impossible for anyone else to compete.
The way the election law used to work is that each district voted for their own candidates. This was somewhat like the US congressional districts. But the law was changed, so that the South votes en masse. That makes it more like a statewide vote. Obviously, New York City dominates in senatorial races, but has nothing to do with the voting in Buffalo Congressional races.
What makes the elections even more of a farce is that each region has a different law meant to minimize political competition and isolate groups Syria doesn't like, like Christians and religiouns Sunnis.

When I heard of Samir Kassir's murder, the first thing I thought of was Hizbullah. Funnily enough, Hizbullah was also the first thing I thought of when I heard of Rafic Hariri's murder.

Given Hizbullah's obvious experience and expertise with the weapons used, and given that they appear to be the ones most to benefit, in Lebanon, from these highly targeted attacks, I wonder why more attention is not paid to them.

Any ideas?

I can understand why there is a tendency to avoid talking about them in Lebanon - it's the fear of a wealthy and sinister armed group supported by Iran.

Perhaps outside of Lebanon there is also a different kind of fear of Hizbullah? Fear of pushing the country over the brink? Fear of political correctness in the face of Hizbullah's role in provoking Israel? If so, is that actually in Lebanon's interests?

Qassir was a hero. And the term martyr does fit in this common Arab understanding.
He wasn't a hero for being killed. He was a hero for his actions in life. He actually stood up to the Syrians when everyone else was afraid to. He never spewed petty racism and anti-semitic remarks when writing.
There is no journalist in the United States I think I can compare him to. He put himself in the line of fire. If Woodward and Bernstein count as heroes, Samir is about three degrees above them for what he did. Of course, Woodstein had a much more powerful effect, but they weren't working under a totalitarian dictatorship willing to assassinate any foe.

Hezbollah doesn't really mount attacks within Lebanon.
I can't stand the organization, but political assassinations are not their style. Suicide bombings, sure, but not really the car bomb in postwar Lebanon. They don't fit the profile.

Their incentive to murder fellow Lebanese is also small. They gain all of their credibility from attacking Israel. However, Syria had great interest in killing both Hariri and Qassir. Although, so did the Lebanese security services which are Syria's hand in Lebanon, but also can operate on their own. Those guys are pretty depraved.

One cannot rule out any possibility, but it is far more likely that Syria, Lebanese Internal Security, or the Syrian Social Nationalist Party killed the two than Hezbollah or Palestinians.

It just doesn't fit. But if an American Embassy employee was assassinated, an Israeli killed, or a Jew visiting Lebanon kidnapped, Hezbollah would be the second on my list. Palestinians and Sunni Islamists would be first.

if you are killed in defense of freedom that automatically elevates you to the status of hero in my book-- especially if he knew the risks. I'm sure he did. This man, whom I've never even heard of, is a legitimate hero.

"Martyr" is a religious term and applies to people who die for their religious beliefs. Suicide bombers are "martyrs" for their religion, whatever religion that might be.

The fight for freedom is always hard. We know this in Lebanon. We have spent decades under the threats of "neighbors", foreigners, and people who just want to steal our dear country from our own hands. We paid a lot of blood in the rivers leading to liberation. From Kamal Jumblatt, to Bashir Gemayel to Rafik Hariri; a whole long list of golden names transforming their deaths into hopes for a revived Lebanon. Samir Qassir joined them in the heaven of martyrs for the Lebanese cause. Let's pray for all those brave spirits, and let's try to protect symbols of freedom who are still between us.... It is very hard to recover from Human losses. God, please enlighten the dark heads of those who really don't know what they are making....

I think "hero" and "martyr" do get thrown around too much. But this man truly was a hero. He knew it was likely people would try to hurt or kill him for what he was doing on behalf of the Lebanese people. He must have received numerous threats. He kept on doing it anyway. That's the kind of heroism we in the West generally only read about.

He was a martyr in the literal (non-religious) sense of dying for what he believed in. He deserves every accolade, memoriam and award that can be bestowed upon someone who fought for democracy and freedom armed with only a pen.
