No doubt it's probably hard to tell from my posts at this site sometimes but secretly, I consider myself a radical moderate! Using the schoolyard/playground metaphor (what I learned in kindergarden blah blah blah) - politics to me is like a see-saw - if too many folks are sitting on one side it doesn't work. Someone has to go sit on the side that's way up in the air and if need be, switch sides as needed just to keep the see-saw balanced.

(Totten, I enjoyed your essay about Jacksonian America. I recently read a book about the roots of that, for lack of a better word, tradition. The book is Born Fighting by Webb and I think you would enjoy it (if you haven't already). The book is one-sided but still a good read.)

Mike #3 or 4: I'll look into Born Fighting. Meanwhile, I heartily recommend Special Providence, by Walter Russell Mead. It contains the column Mead wrote for The National Interest, along with equally superb treatment of the Wilsonian, Jeffersonian, and Hamiltonian schools. I bought and read that book solely after seeing the TNI article.

They're a lot different than derogatory terms for other races, which just sound nasty.

Lebanon.profile, if you generalize your ethnic sterotypes you end up with "honky" or "cracker". If you want pick on "whitey" you need to dig deep, every white person has some trait that you can turn against them. They might be Irish or Italian etc... If I did not live in America I would think that the "sterotyping" (I type like Bush speaks, AAArghh) is an odd and horrible way to behave.

If you live here you have to accept that eveyone from everywhere is going to show up and your country will be different once they are there. Picking on immigrants, poor people and the government is as American as Baseball. We all hate each other but we find common ground and roll with it.
