Kingdom of Heaven

So I saw Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven. How could I not watch Kingdom of Heaven? I love almost all of Ridley Scott’s movies. (Hannibal is the big whopping exception.) Blade Runner ties with Kenneth Branaugh’s Henry V as my favorite movie of all time. And I can still watch Gladiator no matter what kind of movie I’m in the mood for. I’m a sucker for the big epics.

But Kingdom of Heaven? I won’t watch that one again.

I can’t say it totally sucked. It had some powerful moments, as well as some nice subtle touches. But it’s not a good movie, and I can’t recommend it unless you’re a hardcore geek about Jerusalem, Saladin, or the Crusades.

For one thing, when you want to film a Mediterranean city, don’t put the set out in the Sahara. Those of us who have been to both the Med and the Sahara will scoff. We’ll be thrown out of the story every time the camera pans wide. We may not be the majority of the audience, but come on. At least try to find a location that looks vaguely like the one where the story is supposed to be set.

Another serious problem: Saladin conquers Jerusalem waaaaay too easily in this movie. The surrender of the city comes like a bolt out of the blue. People don’t surrender just because there’s a war on. They surrender when they’re getting their asses handed to them and the choice comes down to surrender or die. Ridley Scott doesn’t seem to understand that. If he does understand that he couldn’t be bothered to set it up properly and make the most crucial scene in his movie believable. I had a hard time believing what I was watching, and I know that what happened in the movie really did actually happen in history.

The film is shot through from beginning to end with a much bigger problem, though, a problem I’m surprised a filmmaker as brilliant and accomplished as Ridley Scott allowed into his movie. I need to turn you over to Dr. Frank here because he managed to nail it better than anyone. Not even Oliver Stone would have done this.

Heh,

doktorfrank makes it sound like a medieval version of Reds. Now there was a movie chock full of gigglicious anochronism and relationship angst. That movie was shot only some 60 years after the events. Amazing, no?

Posted by: chuck at May 10, 2005 08:30 PM

From what I understand, they basically were in a 'surrender or die' type of situation. Their goal was to fight beyond their abilities long enough that Saladin would offer them terms of surrender.

As for the scenery, I have no idea what that part of the world looked like almost 1000 years ago, though I would assume such a hotly contested land would have more than sand hills and camels.

I wanted so much to like this movie. And I almost did. It's gorgeous to look at. But it's a mess. It's the Crusades through the eyes of a 21st century secular Liberal with an axe to grind. It's a damn shame because all that does is pull you out of the moment and into current politics.

The actual cinematography is amazing, and it almost transports you back a thousand years-- until the characters start talking and giving you their little politically correct speeches about how Jerusalem is worthless except for the people living in it-- not the holy sites-- or when they portray all catholic priests as douchebags (standard Hollywood fare), or when the muslims shouting 'allahu akbar' as they march on Jerusalem are all noble in their religious conviction-- they're allowed to have religion-- but not the christians. The christians should be religion-free, otherwise they're douchebags (standard). The more religious, the more douchebag. Only the little brown folks can have religious conviction. When they're religious, it's laudable. But when whitey is religious, he's a douchebag. Brown religion=good. White religion=bad. That's the movie.

Whitey, such as the Bailin character, can only be moral if he's "lost his religion". God is fine, in small doses, but not religion. That's why Bailin says God doesn't talk to him. In other words, he follows his own voice, not God's. Only fanatics and douchebags follow imaginary voices of non-existent gods. So if you're religious, like the priests, you're a douchebag.

But not if you're muslim. In that case religion is fine. And that's why Bailin is the most reasonable person in the movie-- and the most moral. Because he's lost his religion, and religion only leads to douchebagness. But it's an odd morality where fucking someobody else's wife is fine, but not having that same criminal husband executed for crimes against innocent muslim caravans-- because that would be immoral. By what standard of morality? Who knows. He pulled it out of his ass.

If secular Liberals could rewrite history, it would look like this movie. All priests would be douchebags, muslims would all be noble, the guys like Bailin who "lose their religion" are mankind's only hope, etc. Pretty standard Hollywood anti-religion fare. The movie in a nutshell: Christianity=evil, Islam=noble, and secular Libs could have made it all better if they had been around back then.

The sad thing is that this brand of revisionism will do nothing to sate Islamic extremists. Hard-core true believers aren't placated by this movie; they just smell blood. Deep down they have as much use for Scott as they do for a bag of pork rinds. Islamists understand the depths of the contempt that their secular enablers feel for Western religious traditions, and (rightly) believe that they can step in to fill the vacuum. Once they've done so there will be no more need for sanitized, sensitized trash like "Kindgom of Heaven" - or self-righteous infidel film makers, for that matter. The one thing that makes me happy about the Jihadis' probable victory in the near future is that fools like Ridley Scott will be just as dead as I am in the end.

You can't be serious. If you are, take a holiday and Iran. See how popular Islamism really is in the Middle East.

I meant "in Iran" not "and Iran."

Saladin was not exactly presented as religious either. You were invited to sneer at his religious advisors just as much as at the Templars, I thought. They just didn't ham it up as much.

I just viewed a copy w a german overdub on my laptop. A good thing I barely understand german. Kept the movie somewhat interesting.

This movie was more editorial than it was reporting.
Spaniard, I'm totally down with your take.
The film is sadly disappointing.
I thought Jeremy Irons was really cool, though.

If you're a hardcore geek about Saladin, Jerusalem or the Crusades I would think you would want to avoid this movie at all costs because it will annoy the piss out of you. Just the opposite, it sounds like a fine movie for people who know nothing at all about the Middle-east and just want to see some people riding around on horses.

Here's a link to a contemporary description of what actually happened when Saladin took Jerusalem:

http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/source/1187saladin.html

In a nutshell, the Christians did not surrender until they had essentially run out of healthy men capable of fighting.

Kingdom of Heaven is a fantastic film if you conveniently overlook its historical inaccuracies. It is visually beautiful---in a comic book sort of way---and I mean this as a compliment. The film makers might be politically correct buffoons, but the results of their efforts on the big screen are truly worth seeing. I quickly ceased getting hung up the nominal references to Islam and Christianity. Instead, I imagined the conflict between fictional foes similar to the Star Wars saga. This worked splendidly for me. I will also give give you some other strong advice: each and every time there is a reference to Muslims and Christians, merely replace those religious identities with something imaginary like the "Boolianos" versus the "Catapulios." Maybe it's best to even stop dwelling on the 13th Century and imagine an era in the distant future of 2525 AD. Harry Gregson-Williams' exciting music score should help you get into the proper mood.

I'll wait for the South Park parody: Fahrenheit 1202 A.D., acted out by puppets and featuring some great hot medieval marionette sex.

David Thompson: The film makers might be politically correct buffoons

For this one movie, yes. Remember, though, Ridley Scott also made Black Hawk Down, which is not at all a buffoonish PC movie.

Posted by: Michael J. Totten at May 11, 2005 08:08 AM

Dr. Frank's and the various reviews I've read seem more fun than the movie, but I'll see it this weekend. :)

Don't forget Cold Mountain for New Age war talk (both sides were bad!) or Crash (everybody's racist!) so just give up, life with all these proles is hopeless!

Orlando Bloom is the perfect New Age hero, isn't he? He reminds me of a Keane painting--the big sad eyes.

Posted by: Patricia at May 11, 2005 08:17 AM

lebanon.profile,

Jeremy Irons was fantastic in that role. He should have been the main man, not some little blacksmith who suddenly becomes a genius in siege warfare.

Michael,

I'm willing to bet Ridley Scott doesn't give a crap either way. Some people aren't ideological beasts like the rest of us. He's an artist. So he got a script and he made a movie out of it. Now he's got to defend that politically correct claptrap, and he's taking the heat.

Posted by: spaniard at May 11, 2005 08:17 AM

spaniard, you're giving Scott too much credit. Here read this.

Q"The word "Crusade" has become loaded since President Bush used it, then retracted it, before he invaded Iraq.
AHe was forgetting that the crusaders were the bad guys. Europe was a bleak and miserable place run by a ruling class, which was also the Church. Was it artificial fervour -- let's take back this Holy Place. Everybody got on that bandwagon for 200 years. Go south, young man, you might do better down there."

So much ignorance. So little time. The crusaders were bad because Europe was bleak and miserable. There was even a ruling class! Like the Muslims didn't have ruling classes! You must read his remark on Black Hawk Down in the article as well. He hoped Black Hawk Down would hurt recruitment for the military is what I think he's attempting to say. I discovered in college that artists should stay away from thinking. It's too intense. This just reconfirms my suspicion.

Posted by: lindenen at May 11, 2005 08:32 AM

Q: Doesn't war always represent that frontier for young men with nowhere to go -- like American kids who end up in Iraq?

RIDLEY: Yeah. I'd hoped Black Hawk Down would put recruiting to rest.

Posted by: spaniard at May 11, 2005 08:38 AM

“For this one movie, yes. Remember, though, Ridley Scott also made Black Hawk Down, which is not at all a buffoonish PC movie.”

But was Black Hawk Down suppose to be a PC movie? Did Ridley Scott fail to achieve his aims?

“Dr. Frank's and the various reviews I've read seem more fun than the movie, but I'll see it this weekend.”

I strongly recommend that you pretend Kingdom of Heaven is a science fiction movie. Do not even for a moment dwell on the actual historical characters and events. Think Star Wars circa the 13th Century, or Mad Max in the unforeseeable future.

Posted by: David Thomson at May 11, 2005 08:44 AM

I think the movie did surprisingly well on the religion issue. I expected it to glorify Islam and trash Christianity much more than it did. It seemed to put down religion on both sides, instead.

One thing I was struck by was how good Balian was at everything. One lesson from his father in swordmanship, and he's a master. Looked at a siege tower model in Jerusalem once, and he's a master of siege warfare. I know it's a movie, but come on.

I also think most complaints about historical accuracy are justified. They got the wrong name for the Templar Grand Master, and the portrayal of him was awful. Having the King of Jerusalem arrest him was also pretty ridiculous. That's basically declaring yourself superior to the Pope, a big no-no back then.

Posted by: Scott at May 11, 2005 08:54 AM

I think the movie did surprisingly well on the religion issue. I expected it to glorify Islam and trash Christianity much more than it did.

Scott,

the movie was mostly neutral towards islam when it wasn't portraying it as noble. And when you're trashing christianity, showing it neutrally is as good as glorifying it. The devout muslims were portrayed as merely devout muslims-- not good, not bad. But even then, there was a nobibility about it. It was the idealized version of Islam-- the 21st century Lib version of islam. And that's cool, I don't crave to see Islam trashed. But when he's purposely trashing christianity, then it's an outrage. For crying out loud, even the young, mean muslim commander wasn't all that slimy. At worst, he was a guy who thought it was a big waste to cross the desert with nothing to show for it.

Re the arrest of the Jerusalem Templar, why not. After all, it was the French king Phillip the Fair who eventually destroyed the Templars.

Posted by: spaniard at May 11, 2005 09:10 AM

This and the linked article are right on, and illustrate what was so great about Gladiator. It had the challenge of creating sympathetic idealists in the sphere of Roman politics, which would be difficult for audiences of our time. The empire had its ideals, but often built them on the backs of slave labor, forced conscription, bloody conquest, and not-quite-representative government.

Instead of trying to give Maximus and his allied politicians some J.S. Mill quotes and high-minded ideas about individual rights, they talk about (if I remember right) the 'dream that was Rome.' They're not trying to save a perfect republic because they're concerned with the rights of the common man - they seem to respect Roman government aesthetically or as a fundamental good.

In fact they refer to the population as 'the mob' almost like a check on the power of the governing elite, a balancing force, not the element that's given power or voice by that elite. And these characters have humanitarian sensibilities alongside their politics. Anyway it's a nice example of avoiding a common pitfall.

MJT,

Alright, alright FINE! I really can't argue with your points, or Dr. Franks for that matter; but I still had a good time watching this movie. If you're like me and are a sucker for Knights, horses, sword battles and that sort of stuff then you'll like this one. Besides you get to walk out of the theater with a nice warm and fuzzy feeling. I'll add this to my DVD collection right there along side Braveheart, The 13th Warrior, Troy, all the Highlanders, First Knight, and a couple others I can't remember right now. Goddamn it I'm a nerd...

Achillea,

Lebanon.profile did use it right, it just sounded awkward. Besides all white people, myself included, should be banned permanently from using such phrases as "Down with that", "For shizzle my nizzle" (in fact make that anything with "izzle" in it), and "What up?". Just, just stop ok? You're not cool, it sounds awkward and stupid, and it's painful for the rest of us. Embrace your whiteness, it's ok.

Posted by: Mike T. at May 11, 2005 06:38 PM

Most of Hollywood seems to want a weak, vacillating "hero" who doesn't stand for much of anything, and then just "wins" by some plot contrivance. This is the big flaw in Troy and Kingdom of Heaven. Hollywood loves Bloom cause he plays this role well.

However, you can't force people to see movies, and this type of character doesn't seem to work for most people, but hey, Hollywood seems to want to force it's agenda on folks instead of say just making pictures folks like.

Look at comedies. PC is the enemy of comedy, which is the main reason movies just aren't funny anymore.

KoH could have been a ripping adventure yarn, or a message movie. Same with Cold Mountain, or Troy. Goldwyn was right.

Posted by: Jim Rockford at May 11, 2005 11:32 PM

Spaniard,

I was trying to say that I've come to expect much worse. I agree that they should strive for a balance, and that if they want to show Christians as awful, they shouldn't shy away from the awful things Muslims did. After all, brutality was just part of life back then.

As for the Templars, the Philip the Fair persuaded the Pope of the day to let him destroy the Templars. Kind of a stupid move for that Pope. Also, I'd have to say that King of France carries a little more weight than King of Jerusalem.

Posted by: Scott at May 12, 2005 08:08 AM

Also, Nate, the gladiator was a man of action who loved his family and was seeking retribution. There's an element of nobility in his character arc: how will he fulfill his destiny? Anyways, he sure wasn't hanging at the Palatine Hill Cafe, sipping absinthe and pondering the meaningingless of existence.

Posted by: Patricia at May 12, 2005 08:17 AM

Also, I'd have to say that King of France carries a little more weight than King of Jerusalem.

That's very true. In fact he was so powerful that it was Pope Clement who was more or less subservient to him. I'm not trying to be a know it all, but the Templars were a fascination of mine once upon a time.

I can only speculate as to what would have happenned to the king of Jerusalem had he beaten a Templar grand master.

Posted by: spaniard at May 12, 2005 09:56 AM

I am a huge Ridley Scott fan. 'Blade Runner' IS my favorite movie of all time and I really enjoyed 'Black Hawk Down' and 'Gladiator'. I knew the Black Hawk Down story and thought the movie was well done and largely absent an overt political message. Apparently, as has been said earlier, in the context of Scott's purpose in making the movie, he failed.

Following my first viewing of Gladiator I was intrigued to know if the characters were from history or fictional. So I did a little (very little) research.

Commodus is, in fact, a former Roman Emperor who did enjoy playing gladiator in the Colliseum. But I could find no indication that he had patricidal and incestuous tendencies. Instead, he seems to have been a happy-go-lucky sort whose interests tended more toward the circus end of the Bread and Circus strategy of keeping the masses under control. In which case the change doesn't negatively affect the quality of the story or the movie. It helps that there is no obvious political message too.

No, the damage Scott does to his own effort to teach us a lesson via 'Kingdom of Heaven' is best said by Spainiard:

"It's the Crusades through the eyes of a 21st century secular Liberal with an axe to grind."

Were it not so obvious he might have pulled it off.

Posted by: too many steves at May 12, 2005 10:07 AM

Spaniard,

I'm only speculating, as well. None of us really understand the motivations of medieval Europeans entirely. I was just pointing that out as something I found hard to believe and very Hollywood, that a King is just top dog and can do whatever he likes.

Obviously, the movie has some pretty serious flaws. I was just picking at little things that bugged me, because the I had anticipated those big flaws.

Posted by: Scott at May 13, 2005 08:16 AM

I realize of most people here I am young. However, as much as I appreciate the literature recommended by my intellectual conteporaries here I would like to recommend to you a bit of music that, while you might not enjoy it's sound, you should be able to see past that and recognize the meaning. (HED) p.e. put out their album "Only in Amerika" last February and it is top notch. Besides being crude and vulgar, it encapsulates what much, very much, of my generation is feeling right now. Look past the references to female genitalia, curse words, and vulgar statements. The message is independent thought, regardless of who or what you represent. The other is a call for unity among all those who love hard rock and rap, and love America above all. You, and I at times, can debate political intricasies all that you would like, but it is people like me, my buddy Darrell in Iraq, and Jahrred from HED who will define the next generation. My grandfather flew B-17's over Berlin; I will join my brothers adn destroy our nations enemies in every which way possible; it is in my blood. Listen to HED p.e., love your country, and above sacrifice all that is necessary to preserver her.
