Staying in Lebanon

I was scheduled to come home early next week, but things are heating up here in the Paris of the Middle East. I am going to stay for a couple more weeks.

I hope you're all reading my Lebanon coverage over at the Spirit of America site. And I hope you're all donating some money. The democracy movement needs every last nickel and dime it can get. Remember, the tent-city is ground zero for the Cedar Revolution. These people quit their jobs and dropped out of school to make it happen. They are not making money, but they desperately need it.

Great pictures. Can you tell me what building materials they use for the pictures you post April 16th?

I have no idea what materials they used in the buildings. These are the originals. They were torn to pieces during the war, and their restoration is remarkable. They look brand-new, but they aren't. You can still see the bullet holes, actually. They left the holes in on purpose, but they partially filled them in to make them subtle, not obvious and ugly.

O/T factoid: After I listened to their music, I remembered that guitarist Dick Dale was the son of Lebanese parents. You can hear the influence in his riffs.

Michael, if you are staying longer in Beirut, I advise to try and visit the rest of the country: It will help with your take on the situation. Beirut is kind of like NYC, and the area you are in is like the Village. you have been to Hizbullahland as well, but the mountains and the rural areas provide an impression from the heartland so to speak, more conservative, less open to outsiders, more tradition bound etc, but great people just different. Plus it is really beautiful country. Its kind of like the difference between NYC and Arkansas, understanding both is integral to getting the US. It is the youth from the "heartland" so to speak that the tent city folk will have to appeal to if lebanon is to undergo lasting change. I am hopeful but it will be a long slog.
