Friends of Democracy is Back

Many of you already know that I edited the Friends of Democracy site before, during, and after the Iraqi election in January. The job was a temporary one, or so I thought then. But we decided to keep going and re-tool the site so we can continue publishing news and views from Iraq indefinitely.

We’re finished with the transition now, and the new-and-improved site is ready to go.

The articles we choose to publish are English translations from Iraq’s new and expanding Arabic-language blogosphere. If you don’t understand Arabic you won’t be able to read regularly-updated authentic Arabic-language blogging anywhere else on the Internet. We’ll be adding new articles almost every day. So please be sure to bookmark the site, tell your friends and family if they’re interested in this sort of thing, and – if you have your own blog – help spread the word.

In my opinion, the site is better now than it was. That’s partly because I’m doing more work on it. I’m not only selecting the stories we publish. I’m also thoroughly line-editing the translated pieces so that reading our site will be easier and more enjoyable.

Yeah, well, no one was line-editing anything on the old site. It made the translations rough and hard to read. It's not better because I'm doing more work, it's better because someone is doing more work. That someone just happens to be me.

Exactly right, Michael. The site is much better, because "someone" is doing the work.
I sincerely thank you for being that someone, for now. The contrast with the Feb 29 article is very clear.

Yet I honestly think you should hire somebody else, in a month or so -- because I think your UNIQUE writing talents would be better used in writing your own insights, columns, etc. Perhaps even a "Shadow Friends" where you comment on many of the posts.

I also suggest you look for more info about Coalition agreements. In Slovakia, with Proportional Representation, each gov't is a coalition of different parties (which are often themselves coalitions; like the Shia coalition). Before the gov't is formed, the different parties have to agree on the outline of the gov't program, and which coalition partner gets which Ministry (source of corruption funds/ power).

Such Prop. Rep. gov'ts can then fail because, when a Ministry finally gets the legislative details worked out, another coalition partner might object enough to vote against it, and the law may fail. Then the unsuccessful party may leave the coalition, and the gov't fails, or a new coalition gov't (& agreement) is formed, or there are new elections, or the gov't continues as a "minority" gov't.

The point is to watch the coalition agreement between the Kurds and the Shia over the status of Kirkuk. The Bremer supported Constitution, along with enough Kurdish votes, was successful in making the majority Shia include at least one other partner in their coalition gov't--so there has to be compromise.

This is good; great. But messy, and those wanting fast progress will say it's too slow ... some will say our dear leader could do it better, faster, if HE just had all the power. That's the path towards dictators.

[To reduce the number of parties, Slovakia has a 5% threshold -- parties getting less that number of votes, don't get any representation in the National Parliament. Those that DO get over the threshold, then pick up mabye a seat or two because only 90-95% of the votes go to successful parties. I don't think Israel has this; I think it should.]

Those are some fine reading letters, and they bring me to ask a couple of questions. How direct are the translations, and how representative are these letters?

Because if those are not massaged in translation, that is some fine thinking; and I'm wondering if we are looking at a small percentage, absolute cream of the crop.

Wonderful service provided by that web site, whatever the case. I supported the war, but I knew a good outcome was not assured. Stuff like this warms my cold, conservative heart.

The translations are in rough shape and I clean them up to make them more readable. English is very much the second language of our translator. But I don't change the content at all, nor do I add my own spin to anything. When you see the word "fascism," for example, that's the author using the word, not me. Likewise, when you see the phrase "the regime was knocked-down," I'm leaving it as-is. That's the phrase many of our writers use, at least as it's translated for us in Baghdad.

It's hard to say how representative they are. I don't publish everything that gets sent to me, but I'm not cherry-picking for ideological reasons. Some of the articles that land on my desk are boring or less coherent and I don't publish those.

I've re-read my comment and I hope it didn't sound like an assault, because it wasn't. Friends of Democracy is a valuable and worthwhile project. I was just asking out of general interest.

I understand that "literal translations" are not possible due to cultural differences, and being familiar with your writing here helps me gauge the articles there. And thank you for not cherry picking on content.

As a translator (unfortunately not of Arabic) and frequent editor of English produced by non-natives (including recently doing some editing of English abstracts for a conference on post-invasion/election Iraq to be held at my university*) I can say pretty conclusively that this is impossible. You can say that you're trying not to change the content, but you probably are. Probably not importantly but just possibly greatly. That's the nature of the process. The only way you can know for sure is thru back translations and/or consultations with the authors/translators (obviously not feasible here - my advice is to be aware of the dangers and proceed cautiously and don't be afraid to ask dumb questions).

*the conference organizer and I have both scratched our heads and wondered what's going on in some of the abstracts and a few times I've had to guess at what the author wanted and edit it that way with no real confidence that I've guessed right.

I hear you on that. If the editing gets too tricky I don't publish some pieces at all for precisely that reason. I don't want to guess. I'm sure I've made some mistakes, but when I know I might be making a mistake I have to pass or ask for clarifications.

From what little I know about Arabic, the pronunciation, the spelling and the meaning of individual words is debatable. The translator has to just go with the flow. Making it more readable is only an improvement.

When I read posts like "Letter to the Next Iraqi President" and some of the pro-democracy posts on Iranian sites, I'm just amazed that people who grew up under totalitarian regimes seem to know more about Democracy than some Americans.

Okay ... here's a sample of what I get to deal with (I'm assuming the author is thinking in Arabic and using English words).

"This paper discusses the complicated case related to the subject of variety and diversity in the Iraqi culture and whether these elements have source of weakness or strength? Because we have ethnic and language varieties can we conceder these a building or destructions factors? And for how long this cultural mosaic will stay close order?"

I don't know the language background of the author and whether English is their second or third (or what) language. And this is far from the most incomprehensible I deal with. This is not to imply that the author is undereducated or unintelligent, it's just an example that I have at hand.

task one: decide (basically in a vacuum) whether the first 'have' was supposed to be 'are' (it makes more sense and it's not that uncommon for Arabic speakers to confuse the two since Arabic doesn't have one and uses the other very sparingly), but maybe the author means 'have' in the meaning 'come from'?
