Are you thinking what Iím thinking?

Posted by Mary Madigan

I thought Michael was supposed to be back by now. Has he wandered off somewhere new? He keeps doing that.

I hope he comes back soon because I’m running out of stuff to say. All I have for you today is some pictures of orange curtains flapping in Central Park.

It’s not much, and Jeremy and Eric have done better coverage of the Gates issue. But, as you know I like to avoid expressing strong or offensive opinions.

If Michael ever does return, I’d just like to say, many thanks to everyone for listening to and making such great comments about my blather; many thanks to Jeremy for sharing the responsibility of guest-blogging and tons of thanks to Michael for the opportunity to speak to the very large audience that he has done a lot of hard work and excellent writing to attract.

Now, I'll get back to my curtains. Oh, and don't forget, I'm still blogging at Exit Zero and with the crew at Dean's World. (that's another reason why women have a hard time in the blogosphere. We're so humble).

"If Michael ever does return, I’d just like to say, many thanks to everyone for listening"--Mary

Very gracious, but it is we who should be thanking you for once again, doing a great job as 'fair & balanced'hostess during Michael's absence.
As to running out of things to say,I would have accomplished that feat by ,oh about day 2.
Thanks much to both you and Jeremy for another outstanding job of 'pinch-hitting'.If the prodigal returns before you post here again,----Until The Next Time !!!

Thanks, dougf! I try to be fair and balanced. I try..

I was just taking a look at the Gates site - if anyone is thinking of visiting, they should go soon. The installation is going to be taken down on the 28th - a very short engagement.

Bye Mary! I thought your posts were terrific! And BTW - if you ever plan a protest in front of the Saudi Embassy, you can count me in! :-)

Oh and Mary - little addendum - I read your link to Kevin Drum re women bloggers. I'm not a blogger - just a little comments section maze rat (make that prairie dog - don't they also navigate underground mazes?)- and I wonder if he doesn't have a point there about women bloggers? I actually feel pretty bad when I'm really harsh on folks and sometimes I'm so harsh I wish I could take it back altogether (I just sort of walk through my day hanging my head in shame and hoping noone noticed :-). I've never seen you be harsh (well - OK maybe once or twice) but compared to many representatives of the "male species" that post here?

spit (ha ha - a little LGF joke...)

Apropos of your question, "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" - frankly I'm now wondering - What WAS I thinking?? I'm ready to string up "b" from the nearest limb, metaphorically speaking(next thread up). I take it all back. No guilt.

Posted by: Caroline at February 25, 2005 05:54 PM

Mary, both you and Jeremy are owed a debt of gratitude by we & your adoring fans (well, I don't ADORE Jeremy, but I kinda do like him... Well, not LIKE him like him, OK, so he's swell too). (Just kidding Jeremy, put that baseball bat down)

At any rate, I have discoverd great new reading material through both of you and I have enjoyed some great reading here. Thanks

Posted by: GMRoper at February 25, 2005 06:04 PM

Thanks so much, GM. And don't worry, the Louisville Slugger is for guys like 'b.'

And yes, it is pretty hard to believe that 'b' is a she, though by no means impossible. When I worked as a mental health counselor there were a handful of female clients (and dozens of men of course) who would make 'b' seem like a cute little puppy dog by comparison.

But I really appreciate your support, Caroline. While on one level I can pretty much handle a-holes like that, I'd be lying if I said it didn't sap a bit of strength from me (insight into male psyche: I feel I'm risking much by admitting even the slightest vulnerability here, but any man who says he never has his feelings hurt by other men's abuse is lying to you and/or to himself).

Anyway, it's always extremely helpful to stick up for people, even if they don't appear to need it. I'm going to remember that when I see one of the big bloggers catching grief. It never seems like they'd have much need for the support of some random reader such as myself, but I really think that every single supportive comment is a much needed shot in the arm.

One qualification to my remark about men hurting other men's feelings is that it is possible to get tougher, to get a thicker skin through years of verbal sparring. Women are every bit as capable of doing this as men. But we men seem to enjoy it more, that process of learning to take abuse, feel it toughen you, and then hand it back to see whether the other guy can handle it. It begins to feel like a sport.

I think women are generally better able to see how unhealthy this is, thus fewer women choose to practice this 'sport' unless they really have no choice (like having several brothers, perhaps, or simply being intent on succeeding in an old-boys sort of profession).

Sorry, I was offline all day - I don't know if "b" is a Wolcott wannabe, or a Jeanine Garafalo wannabe, but I have noticed that the American left seems to mistake humorless abuse for wit.

I usually respond to abuse with abuse (a tactic that every person who has survived junior high learns) but as a guest-host, it just seems wrong to respond with "shut your festering gob, you tit, your type really makes me sick...etc." We have to be civilized.

Caroline - I didn't disagree with everything Kevin Drum said, but I did think it was ironic. When, on his site, I pleasantly suggested that we should have dismembered the Saudi government years ago, the men site were shocked. In fact, they think any opinion which contradicts theirs is strong and offensive, and women disagree with Drum fairly often. They're disagreeing with him a lot now. He's already disproven his own theory.

Re: the title question
I think so, Mary, but will this "elephant blogging" idea ever catch on?

Posted by: Michael Brazier at February 26, 2005 10:56 PM

Just reconnecting to my computer after an entire day off spent discovering that the central Piedmont rural area of NC where I live - that would be nearest to Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill - is experimenting with wine vineyards! - To presumably replace the dying tobacco industry. Very cool is all I can say although I wasn't very impressed with the just several years old stock. Of course I said no such thing as I really hope it catches on. No doubt it will improve with time and experimentation. (You heard it here first - NC wine country!)

To Jeremy - all I can say is that vulnerability is a good thing as long as one simply feels the pain and then moves on past it (as opposed to shutting down altogether and refusing to take risks). However, I don't see much good from merely becoming hardened. My motto is - have a good cry and move on! (and I think that should apply to both men and women). Having said that - I detest bullies. If there's a little grade-schooler or high-schooler in all of us we're not so little now and we don't have to take it anymore!!

For anyone twiddling their thumbs, waiting for Michael's return (and as he left a comment we know he's OK) - I found this link at LGF - and felt it quite well crystallized much of the debate that has transpired at this site over many months (and the fact that LGF has linked to it is one of the resons why I regularly follow his site):

Wolfowitz plan

It seems to me that what we're talking about is INFORMATION. For every post at this site that has dealt with the Iraq war, tyranny, poverty, oppression, Islam, Iran, the MSM and on and on - practically all of it - I see information as THE central story. It's the 21st century revolution (The information revolution?). The world as we have known it until now cannot survive in the face of free information and the attempt to get at truth (or at least the open capacity to debate about what it is and where it can be found). This idea can even be found in Thomas Barnett's book - The pentagon's new map. ANY form of tyranny can only survive when it controls information. I am quite optimistic that those days are over. Tyrannical forces simply cannot control information anymore. They can use it to great advantages for propoganda certainly but I would say that overall the game is over. The internet changes everything. People will come to some common recognition that they are all over more alike in every way than they are different. That's not to say that the road ahead isn't likely to be rocky as hell - just that I think the outcome is foreordained.

WAY O/T! But what else to do when one is waiting... :-)
