Questions for Readers

I have a cantankerous Wild West of a comments section. And that's great. Today I'm going to put it to productive use for a change. Actually, I'm going to channel it somewhere else.

As most of you already know, Friends of Democracy and Spirit of America are filming a live Iraqi election coverage TV show on C-SPAN Sunday from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm Eastern Standard Time. (That's 11:00 to 1:00 for you late-sleeping laggards on the West Coast.)

This will not be the C-SPAN you know and love (or loathe). It's going to be pretty slick compared to that channel's usual fare. It's being professionally produced and shot in the National Geographic studio, which I can tell you is a very cool place. I spent most of Saturday there getting ready for this thing. Here's a photo our tech guy Donovan took with his digital Nikon:

Part of what we want to do is solicit feedback from readers of the site. I am going to sift through that feedback and read some of it (live and on camera) to our guests and panelists. We have a pretty good lineup. It includes: Christopher Hitchens, author and journalist; Ahman Al Rikaby, former Director of Radio Free Iraq and current Director of Iraq's Radio Dijla; Entifadh Qanbar, Special Envoy from the Iraqi National Alliance; Ghassan Atiyyah, Director of the Iraq Foundation for Development and Democracy; Hassan Mneimneh, Director of the Iraq Memory Foundation; and Jim Hake, Founder and CEO of Spirit of America.

If you have your own questions, please ask them and we'll see if we can incorporate them into our programming. If you prefer to answer some of our questions instead, here is the place to start:

1. Was the Iraqi election successful?
2. Who are the terrorists and insurgents? What do you think they hope to accomplish through violence?

3. Do you think the American people have a good understanding of what is happening in Iraq? If yes, why? If not, why not?
4. People in America see that there is a great deal of violence in Iraq. Is there hope?

These aren't essay questions, and you don't have to answer all of them. A few sentences would be fine, although longer responses also are welcome. If you do ask or answer a question, be sure to tune in live on C-SPAN from 2:00 to 4:00 pm Eastern Standard Time and see if we use your material.

To make it easier for us on the show, please don't respond in my comments section. Respond in the comments on the Friends of Democracy site instead. Here is the link to the post where the questions are asked. That's where we need your comments. Not here. You can argue amongst yourselves all you want (as usual) here, but please don't do it over there.

If you have a blog and you feel like throwing some of your reader feedback our way, please link to that post. Send your vast hordes. Give 'em the chance to have a little C-SPAN fame of their own.

I do have a question or two, though.

What do they expect will happen with the fight over the personal status law?

What are the signs to watch for of Shia overreach?

Will the UIA list hold together or break apart in parliament?

What portion of Sadriyyun will vote, and will they switch allegiances?

Bill, wtf is your problem? That man lost his life because someone hates the very notion of freedom and democracy, and was willing to kill to prevent it. I can think of far worse ways to die for that brave Iraqi soul. May G-d watch over him, and all the good people of Iraq.

I'm going to answer your first question now:

1. Was the Iraqi election successful?

If you define successful as having a list of candidates whose names and positions are published, an informed electorate who participate equally under fair and open conditions, I'd have to say with a resounding voice NO.

Consider the fact that the majority of the over 7000 candidates didn't want their names known, much less than their actual positions on, say, women's role in Iraqi society, how can the electorate possibly be informed?

Considering that in spite of security measures that border on the draconian, and that voters often didn't know where they would be voting (oddly, the insurgents knew it would be schools, and therefore have been blowing them up), how could it be considered fair and open?

Considering the return of horrific repression of women, including "honor" killings of rape victims, it is doubtful that many women will vote because they are simply too afraid of being punished for being "uppity". Those that do, I have to wonder how many of them are simply voting as they are told to without given the chance to determine for themselves who will look out for their rights.

I'd call this election a mockery of democracy.

Fearless prediction: The Iraqi election will go well (with at least 50% of those voting being female, Jean), violence will decrease over the coming months because of the capture of cell leaders, and suddenly Iraq won't be story one, two, or three any more. (How many stories have you read about Afghanistan lately?)

Do you think the American people have a good understanding of what is happening in Iraq?
Most have the merest of clues, and what they do know is filtered through the storyline that NPR and the BBC to their shame, have been promoting.... violence, lots of violence, elections held hostage by "insurgents", Iraq a country of warring factions who have no understanding nor taste for democratic institutions. Democracy cannot be induced at gunpoint. Sunnis didn't vote in large numbers, so the insurgents "win." But I have my bias as well. I can be moved to tears easily by the thought of people so long denied on pain of death, any opinion, now taking to the polls to vote. The local news last night ran a couple "man on the street" interviews. They quickly sited excessive violence in Iraq, loss of American boys, and the need for a timetable for withdrawal. Thanks Mr. Kennedy! You've sold your sack of shit far and wide.
This is one time when hope, optimism and bravery in the face of adversity is the story, and most people here just don't begin to "get it."

No one was claiming that the insurgency was over or that the deadly attacks would end. But the atmosphere in this usually grim capital, a city at war and an ethnic microcosm of the country, had changed, with people dressed in their finest clothes to go to the polls in what was generally a convivial mood.

Jean - 1 out of 3 candidates on the ballot are women. Sounds to me like they are indeed being given the opportunity to vote for people who will look out for their rights. That's more than can be said for the women in neighboring Arab countries.

Successful Election--a resounding YES! Love it when the pundits are proved wrong one more time. I am so very tired of negative reporting. Read the Oregonian this morning. They are falling all over themselves in trying to make it a negative. Cartoons that show bodies all over the ground with arrows pointing to the voting booth, negative reports that have nothing to do with actual happenings. They must have set the type early and decided to print them anyway cause that is what they predicted.

So what are you celebrating?

The mass finger printing of every person that votes is the biggest loss of freedom in one day anywhere in the world.
By the end of the day their names and pictures will be in every government database all over the world. They will be forever trapped in a database to be treated as a criminal every time there is a fingerprint search done.

I'm watching the livefeed from CSPAN right now.

Hitch has made the point crystal clear that anyone who had previously depended on MSM is going to be perplexed by the high turnout and relative security of the elections. I agree with him.

If you depended on say, Robert Fisk or the L.A. Times, you would have turned on your CNN expecting to see bodies stacked like cordwood, with intermittent views of abandoned polling stations.

This is not the case. Hitch also opined on how talking point politics, most specifically the adoption of the word "qaugmire" as the foundation of their political position, has seriously marginalized the minority opposition to democracy in Iraq.

That's a Good Thing. We are in the midst of a conflict. The timeline is currently almost three years long and from where this citizen sits the progress being made is concrete and the end goal is worthy of my support.

The fight is over when one side admits defeat. More than half of America is committed to winning, at least as of last November.The opposition does not labor under the constraints of popular support being necessary for conducting operations; they kill retail or wholesale until they are caught or killed... or until the day they are made powerless by the rise of democraticly elected governments capable of bringing rule of law and improved living conditions that will deprive the opposition of their recruiting pool.

Conflict is not defeat. It's a process by which victory or defeat is decided. We are winning, and today's event is a solid entry in the success column.

You are a flaming idiot. They weren't fingerprinted you ignorant slob, they dipped their finger in henna. It is a semi-permanent ink (lasts about a week)that is frequently used at weddings as a demonstration one attended. When my cousin, whose father is from Baghdad got married, everyone at the wedding dipped a finger in henna (me included). It is a sign of participation you effing fool.

I want to find some henna now. In a few days I want to dip my finger to show support for the Iraqi electorate. (Not today or tomorrow though; let the real voters stand out.)

Here's the incredible thing; a large portion of an entire nation can now legitimately think of themselves as heroes. I have high hopes for Iraq.

So far so good, but casting ballots is just the first step. I'm certainly glad that the first step has gone as well as it did. But we still have several steps to go before we can make definitive comments about election 'success'. These include counting the ballots, announcing the results, having the results accepted and getting those elected to respond to their constituents. I hope these steps all go as well as the first (especially having the results accepted and having the elected officials respond to their constituents).

According to an Iraqi colleague who was there over the summer, they're almost entirely Baathists and foreigners. They two groups have different agendas (restoring a Baathist regime vs some sort of muddled jihadist ideology) and are most likely only very temporary allies destined to clash should they succeed in their primary goal (which I hope doesn't happen).

No. I think the great majority of Americans don't especially care.

My Iraqi colleague (and his much previously much more pessimistic wife) are both optimistic about the future of Iraq although they have no plans to move back (she's especially clear on this point, even though some aspects of life in Europe don't please her).
One point with the violence that's usually overlooked is, the insurgency is distracting a lot of American attention that they might otherwise be putting into half-baked, poorly thought out and even more poorly executed plans to Americanize Iraqis.
As long as the primary targets remain foreigners and those few Iraqis who work closely with them, the great majority of Iraqis can go about their business without undue interference from either pro- or anti- occupier forces.
Assuming that Iraqis know best what they want for their country, a certain amount of resistance that's aimed at US forces isn't that bad a deal for them (this is Realpolitik not an expression of sympathy for the insurgents).

Why is it bad to be a leftist today?

How strange that the election is seen by some as a big win for the home team political ideology, and by others as a big loss.

How obsessively self centered. When its about what is best for Iraqi's, or whats best for us, or for the world... then opinions have a basis and reason for being. When it becomes whether or not this is a victory or a loss for the disconnected observers because they've staked their opinion on the outcome... thats missing the point.

A point about the MSM. They tend to be conservative, but most of all they tend to go for large shares of the audience. Its a numbers game that has to do with advertising and demographics. They go with the story. Explosions are inherently interesting, schools in Iraq are not. Its not becuase they are leftists. They don't show bits of Iraqi's blown all to hell because its disturbing, but not because they want to censor the media for the military-industrial complex's interests.

The MSM get their news from the AP, the AFP, and Reuters... these three serve the whole of the media... left and right. They serve up stories in a watered down form from their correspondents that are edited to not offend one side or the other, that are placed in a journalistic format of the upside down triangle (broad ideas to specifics) and judge stories based on impact, appeal, interest, etc.. etc..

There isn't some mass conspiracy to keep the media leaning one way or the other... though there are certainly influences from either side. Mostly from conservative interests, since they tend to have cash, and lawyers, public relations, own the company, etc.. its inevitable. They really spend the dough on Mad Cow scares. They don't write those fat checks about something as trivial as the war in Iraq.

Tinfoil hat wearing commies or fascists both find themselves underrepresented in the MSM. Its illusionary. They aren't. Tinfoil hats are a niche market, and thus not fit for MSM, as they are fringe. So you get niche media... with advertisements for cruelty free soap, or personal bomb shelters... depending on the color of your tinfoil hat.

To the rest of the world, saying things like 'NPR is the right hand of the communist party' or 'CNN is a puppet of the neo-fascists' just lets people know what kind of tinfoil hat you prefer, and not much else.

If you find yourself saying things like that... believing things like that, its time to reevaluate. Take a walk. Stay off the internet. Listen to the birds chirp. Please make sure let your nurse at the asylum know where you're going. They tend to worry.

If you want to talk about the think tanks and media outlets like Brookings institute, or the Heritage foundation, now you're getting somewhere.

I watched the live vote coverage on C-Span. As a civics/democracy educator I was brought to tears by the photo of the berka clad woman with a tear in her eye proudly displaying her ink stained finger. The first thing I did this morning upon arriving to my office was stain my own finger with an ink pad in solidarity witht he Iraqi people. It is not everyday that you witness the birth of a new democracy, indeed it is not every lifetime.
