Going to D.C.
I'm flying out to Washington D.C. for the Spirit of America / Friends of Democracy post-election event on Sunday. It will be broadcast live on C-SPAN. More details to follow after I land, get settled into the hotel, and figure out exactly what's going on. In the meantime, enjoy the guest-blogging by Mary and Jeremy.

Tonight on my local CTV News in Canada, they offered three stories on Iraq. The first was about the fear of candidates whose names are now being made public. The second was about a possible voting site that had been bombed. The third was an interview with a moderate Sunni who wasn't taking part in the elections. And that's it. I'm not saying that these stories aren't important, but they don't give a very honest or accurate assessment of what's going on in Iraq as a whole. It's nice to get some different perspectives and FOD has those in spades. (I loved the description of the first debate in Samawa! Somehow I think the Iraqis will be just fine.)

I wanted to apologize for swinging at you yesterday. Your "Hubris" remark was wrong, but it struck a nerve and caused me to attack you in a way that was more or less juvenile. I'm sorry.
I literally have friends fighting in Iraq right now. These are guys I drank with, laughed, cried, bled and sweat with as a teenager. Now people are shooting at them almost everyday and I'm half a world away and can do nothing to help. They are great guys and their intentions are nothing but good. All they want to do is their job; help these people, and get home. Please don't diminish what they are doing by making such remarks.

It is impossible to handicap this election with any degree of certainty. My hope is that Al-Iraqiya will outpoll the United Iraqi Coalition by a slight margin in order for Allawi to stay in control. Al-Iraqiya has a more secular bent than the United Iraqi Coalition and having them lead the coalition government will mitigate (hopefully) attempts to elevate religious law above secular law.
