Right... I wonder what that will achieve, even if it is remotely realistic?

And who did that Photoshop job on Seif el-Islam? Is it really necessary to make him look a luminious green colour?

Children of dictators are raised in places where absolute power and absolute privilege reside. That is the reason I suspect that they are, if anything, likely to be worse than their fathers. Just last week the Boston Globe opined that in Syria "Bashar Assad, has earned a reputation for reckless behavior, the antithesis of his father Hafez Assad's careful, calculating statecraft." Kim Jong-il is certainly no better than his father. And Odai and Qusay were at least as brutal as Saddam.

Thus, in addition to the reasons you offered for skepticism, I suspect that your instincts about Seif el-Islam are correct.

Great essay. Once again the New York Times gives good press to another socialist-inspired regime. While they say their bias is ‘liberal’, it’s very Left.

This is very bad news. I had been taking it for granted that Seif el-Islam truly believed in democracy. It is also a further reminder that the United States and its coalition partners must continue knocking down the dominoes in the Mid East. We cannot afford to patiently wait until the Muslim world gets its act together.

Michael Totten deserves much credit and our congratulations for his efforts to uncover the truth. Where was the MSM? They have vastly more money and resources than our independent blogger. Yet, it’s Totten who is getting the job done. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Expect the son of Qadafi to suffer the same fate as the sons of Saddam. People of primitive dar al Islam are waking up. Thanks for the dispatch from the belly of the beast, Michael.

I actually registered with the NYT because WSJ and WaTimes referrenced NYT articles so much on this subject I finally had to bite the bullet and see what the original Times pieces contained.

I never expected Kadahfi to liberalize but I had hoped his WMD cooperation and rhetoric had a little more good faith behind them. Reading the Times you'ld almost think they were setting up their readers for a "gotcha" down the road...

That would never happen, of course. That would be manipulating news for an agenda.

/ sarcasm.

I never thought pop Assad used statecraft where a stick with a nail in it was to hand, myself. If we had let Sharon run to Damascus and Cairo in '73 this world would be a much better place today.

BTW, I say "we" because the mistakes of our elected government are ours.

Give the NYT a break

I didn't get a chance to read the whole NYT article. Sorry if I misinterpreted anything. To me, the most damning fact in your essay was this:

"Since one person in six works for the mukhabarat -- the secret police -- everyone who dared express his opinion did so only with the utmost caution in absolute privacy"

This fact makes any claim that Libya is a 'democracy' a joke. I just assumed the the NYT didn't report that, based on past experience.

But the Times isn't all bad. They have some great recipes.

Or to put it more succinctly:

Why should the Thinking People see this as "outing" el-Islam when he makes a statement like his 51% dictatorship statement? Especially when "ChumpyBushMcHitler" won {NO! He STOLE it!} 51% of the vote this time.

I've heard this sort of crap at Certified Smart People™ Parties who insist we are a dictatorship not because of a revocation of Habeas Corpus or the Constitution, but simply because their guy (Alderman, Mayor, Senator, Rep, Gov or Prez) lost in a free election to "That Idiot/Theif/Twit/Tool/Toady/B@st@rd/B!tch/Whatever."

Indeed, how wonderful it would be for these Authentic Men and Women of the People if there was only one candidate in an election -- the one The People ["that are in this room"] want! And everyone else can just bask in the beauty of "direct democracy" (or we can just take them out and shoot them since they are clearly Erzats People).

Nope, I think Seif el-Islam (Green or otherwise) himself will be surprised at how many people he's snowed over.

Moammar Ghaddafi's daughter is less subtle in her politics -- she's doing someone's (?) work regarding Saddam's legal team being suitable for making the headlines to come. There is a lot of spinning going on and MG's son is just one part of it. MG is still trying to sell an old agenda, but his family's activities suggest he thinks better packaging was needed.
