Video of the Tsunami

Pundit Guy is hosting several "home videos" of the tsunami. There is no gore, but more than enough horror. Some videos even show tourists on the beach who have no idea what is about to happen to them. If someone you know is missing you might not want to watch these.

He's getting hammered with bandwidth charges, so if you watch the movies please click the "Make a donation" link. He promises to send half the proceeds to disaster relief.

When are folk going to get wise to bitTorrent? This is a perfect example of where to use it. He should have gotten the files, started a torrent, posted a link and relaxed. He would not be having bandwidth issues, the files would be downloaded much faster and without service problems.

Bit Torrent is the way to share files. Instead of everyone downloading files from one site, everyone shares the bandwidth. For example, if I want to watch the videos, he takes the files, creates a tracker and puts the link to it on his site. When I download the tracker (several Kb instead of several Mb in size) I start downloading from him. As I am downloading, someone else wants to download the files, instead of downloading from him, they start downloading from me. Now I am uploading and downloading instead of just downloading. His bandwidth problems vanish and everyone gets to see the videos. The videos are a little on the small size for bit torrent (it gets better the bigger the files are because more people are downloading/uploading at once) but if he took a bunch of the videos and and zipped them up it would be pretty good.

It does require a client on the end-user side, but it is well worth it. This is how we can quickly and cheaply disseminate large quantities of data. Blogging is great for spreading text, but bit torrent is great for spreading video.

I already sent him an email letting him know about it. Hopefully, he can set it up and save on his bandwidth costs. And help get the videos out to more people.

Maybe I have configuration issues, because when I try to use Bittorrent my download is no faster than usual.

Regarding those beachgoers, they literally did not know what hit them until they were swept away. Poor guys. Some of them are just standing around watching, and then it was too late when they wised up.

David, it depends on what you're downloading, but the most important thing is to make sure you've got all the ports opened up that you should have.
