Thousands of Miles of Hell

Sometimes a picture is not worth 1,000 words. Even though it's impossible, try to imagine thousands of miles of coastline looking like this. It boggles the mind as much as the death toll.

I will be absolutely astonished if the death toll is below 100,000.

I can see the toll possibly doubling from the 23,000 estimated now and beyond who knows from disease, epidemics etc. in the coming weeks, months. I can't imagine they have anything accurate in terms of the deaths yet from Aceh, Indonesia which is closest to epicenter.

It is strange that this disaster has damaged Southern Thailands tourist economy more than the terrorists could have ever hoped. It probably won't recover for two years, but it will eventually recover.

Parts of Malaysia must have got whacked pretty hard too - not hearing much about it.

Please donate to the Red Cross, or any other organisation on the ground doing good work.

I live in Hong Kong and we stuck two cheques in an envelope and posted it to the Red Cross here.

It's very easy and you can donate online too.

Death toll is 40,000 confirmed dead as of Tuesday morning, but officials are stressing that there are many, many areas that haven't been visited yet, and thousands unaccounted for.

ABC has upped the count to 50,000 confirmed, and says that officials expect the death toll to keep rising.

The Red Cross has put out an appeal for 44 million dollars. The Canadian online donation site isn't functioning, from overuse, I'd imagine.

Yes. It's not just the explosion: lava flows could cover much of Idaho and the other surrounding areas. I think about such things even in normal times, which makes me perhaps a bit weird and tends to give me a fatalistic outlook on natural disasters. It also makes me nervous when food production is taken away from local areas and outsourced to the midwest and other countries. It gives me mixed feelings about the removal of farm supports, the current goody goody cure for third world poverty.

Folks, the chance of major disasters in your neighborhood in your lifetime is slight, but proper habits can minimize trouble in the long term. Example: the spread of AIDS is affected by habits of sexual morality that seem to have no immediate rational basis.

Bloggers do it all the time, every day. I posted a link to where I found them. And I've never heard of a case where anyone got upset or in trouble. Sometimes my own photos (like those I took in Libya) get republished and I certainly don't mind.

Posting pictures is ok as long as you attribute and link to, if possible, the original source.

What is not ok is linking to the pictures so that the unsuspecting source sees a sudden bandwidth spike.

a back of the envelope calculation to keep in mind:
Sunday's earthquake alone released an amount of energy equivalent to 1000 Hiroshimas. Consider the fact that some energy was lost in transfer between the earthquake and the tsunami, and that the tsunami lost some more energy during transit, and then look at the destruction you see in pictures. One nuclear bomb would be well over 1000 times worse than all of that. I really don't want Iran to have nuclear weapons.
