No Eulogy

I second Ken Wheaton's pledge:

I pledge to do my best to unseat any U.S. politician, regardless of party, who sings the praises of Yasser Arafat upon the death of said terrorist, thug and henchman, a scourge to Israelis, oppressor and thief to his own people, and murderer of both.

I too rise in support of this resolution.

Posted by: FH at November 4, 2004 04:26 PM

TOTALLY RIGHT ON.

I shudder to think of how much pressure will be put upon the new adminstration to "say something nice" about that cold-blooded murderer. I don't think FDR sent roses to Eva when Hitler died.

Posted by: steve matlock at November 4, 2004 04:33 PM

steve,

Bush has already said "God bless his soul". As a christian, as Bush proclaims to be, it's something you would hope for anybody's soul, even a terrorist's.

I wish the old coot the same thing, though I won't shed a tear when he dies.

Posted by: David at November 4, 2004 04:39 PM

Dude's been on my "better dead" list for a long time...

Posted by: Brian Swisher at November 4, 2004 04:47 PM

David,

I wouldn't say that President Bush was "saying something nice" about Arafat when he said that. He was just being true to himself.

He might have even been thinking "may God have mercy on his soul" at the time. He can't say that at a press conference though.

BTW, I don't know who Ken Wheaton is, but I like his style.

And Ken, since Cynthia McKinney just got re-elected, you have your first assignment.

Get busy, and godspeed.

Posted by: SoCalJustice at November 4, 2004 04:49 PM

SoCalJustice,

McKinney got re-elected? Really?

Posted by: Michael J. Totten at November 4, 2004 05:07 PM

MJT

Yes. Sad, but true:

http://www.wsbtv.com/news/3885283/detail.html

Denise Majette, who beat her last time around, decided one term was enough and ran to fill Zell Miller's open Senate seat. She lost to Johnny Isaakson, as everyone knew she would.

McKinney won the Dem primary in July - which is basically a general election victory in that district.

So in short, she back.

Posted by: SoCalJustice at November 4, 2004 05:11 PM

I'll take that pledge too..

..and Reid has the whole sad story about McKinney at:

http://www.photodude.com/article/2562/god-sent-her-home

Posted by: mary at November 4, 2004 05:12 PM

BTW,

McKinney's comeback to the House, and the landslide re-election of Jim "If it were not for the strong support of the Jewish community for this war with Iraq, we would not be doing this" Moran is straining on my last Democratic nerve.

I know the party has "left" a lot of people - not me yet, but it's getting there.

I am praying that people like Evan Bayh and John Edwards find a way to rescue us from the bigots and the psychos that Terry MacAulliffe refuses to call out.

Posted by: SoCalJustice at November 4, 2004 05:16 PM

Whoops, make that:

So in short, she's back.

Posted by: SoCalJustice at November 4, 2004 05:19 PM

Hope Arafat has a fire suit.

Not really.

Posted by: Joe Marino at November 4, 2004 05:26 PM

I can't believe she got re-elected. Yeesh. I wonder if there's anyone in Georgia I can shame.

Posted by: ken at November 4, 2004 06:02 PM

I can already see the spectacle of every country sending its top diplomat to that murderers funeral like he's Ghandi or something. Except two of course, Israel and the United States.

Posted by: Doug at November 4, 2004 06:29 PM

Doug,

We may not send him but I'll bet Jimmy makes the party.

Posted by: Rick Ballard at November 4, 2004 07:40 PM

Rick,

Who said Carter's an American?

Posted by: Doug at November 4, 2004 09:37 PM

I just took this pledge moments ago without even knowing it existed:

"I'm sure the eulogies will flow, especially from Europe. But I refuse to play the game. Arafat was a mass murderer, not a hero, and a major impediment to peace. In the 1990's I had watched the Arafat-Rabin handshake on the White House lawn with a lump in my throat, and thought that perhaps it was really possible that an avowed terrorist could be transformed into a statesman. But Oslo and its aftermath disabused me of that notion. Arafat passed up on his chance for greatness, and went to his death as a washed-up terrorist who brought ruin upon his people. That he has finally passed from the scene offers a possibility that there can finally be a real chance for peace between Israelis and Palestinians. With Arafat holding the reins, there was none, just murder and deceit. He has betrayed the Palestinian people, filled their youth with hatred through his propganda campaign, and sent them off to sacrifice themselves and others on the bloody altar of his ego. Good riddance."

Posted by: PurpleStater at November 4, 2004 10:57 PM

I'm not going to praise Arafat or disagree with anyone who reviles him.

He has been a bigger obstacle to peace and justice than the settlers have been. His death allows things to move forward.

At the same time, Isralis have to make peace with people who believe him to be their hero.

As a gesture, Israelis ought to let him be buried in Jerusalem, a city that does not belong only to Israelis.

Posted by: Markus rose at November 5, 2004 02:36 PM

Markus, Markus, Markus

He is a killer! A muderer of thousands and thousands of Israelis and the tormenter and fascist thug dictator and yes killer of his people. If they revere his memory they are doomed. Their only chance is to become fully aware of what he was and what he did to them. And only a new Palestinian leader can reveal this truth and I will know a new day has dawned if this happens. (I will not hold my breath) He is not to be buried in Jerusalem. By rights his body should be cremated and scattered at sea as was done with executed Nazi war criminals lest a shrine to his memory be erected. Since this will not happen I will be DAMMED if his corpse descrates the holiest city on earth. If this shocks or disturbs you wake up and see the world as it is not as you wish it to be.

Concerning your article:
I second Ken Wheaton's pledge:
I pledge to do my best to unseat any U.S. politician, regardless of party, who sings the praises of Yasser Arafat upon the death of said terrorist, thug and henchman, a scourge to Israelis, oppressor and thief to his own people, and murderer of both.

I won’t defend the Arafat case and his acts, however he is so defendable, but tell me if this is racism and discrimination coming from officials
I’ve never been really Pro-Palestine, but I’ve always been against injustice.
Note for the reader do not confuse Jewish and Israeli.
http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/meast/11/05/arafat.health/index.html
Although Arafat's family wants a Jerusalem burial, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has ruled it out.
Israeli Justice Minister Yosef Lapid lambasted the idea.
"Jerusalem is the city where Jewish kings are buried and not Arab terrorists, a mass murderer." Lapid said.
1st point: Alive or dead, you will never sleep in peace, many years in exile, 2 years prisoner in his own house and country but still …
- If he was terrorist then why they didn’t imprison him?
2nd point: “…Arab terrorists…” Is someone who’s fighting for his land a terrorist?
- Talks by itself
3rd point: “…Arab terrorists…” Who talked about Arabs? All the “Freedom fighters” are Palestinians. Have you ever heard about a Egyptian, Moroccan or … fighting there.
- Propaganda and encouraging discrimination and racism in other words Nazi
4th point: “…a mass murderer.” What about Mr the Prime minister “…Sharon, described as the "butcher of Sabra and Shatila" "was responsible for a particularly barbaric Israeli punitive operation in two refugee camps in west Beirut, in September 1982, when thousands men, women and children were massacred."
- It took him three days to do that, Arafat was never as much successful as Sharon.
