Being Instapundit

Cows have four stomachs. Glenn Reynolds has six brains.

One reads the Internet. (Yes, the entire Internet.) A second brain thinks about what the first brain reads. A third answers his email. (I have access to his inbox. It gives a whole new meaning to the word “Instalanche.”) A fourth brain composes posts on Instapundit. A fifth writes columns for Tech Central Station, MSNBC, and The Guardian. A sixth teaches law.

So when Glenn goes on vacation he has to enlist at least three people (who only have one brain apiece, I might add) to fill in for him.

You know how it is when you click on over to Instapundit. He’s got links to seemingly everything over there. You’ll get a decent idea what’s going on in the country, in the world, and in his six brains just by scanning his list of links. If you click on over today and see what Ann Althouse, Megan McArdle, and I have posted you won’t get that. Sorry. We can’t cover everything. We need three more brains to do that.

Before I became one-third of Instapundit I didn’t know how he does it. Now I really don’t know how he does it. I’m kidding about the six brains. He doesn’t really have that many – I don’t think. He’s just a very talented person. It’s a good thing he makes decent money from blogads. Instapundit is a job.

Ann Althouse wrote about what it's like for her to be another third of Instapundit. You and me both, Ann!

We don't demand too much from Glenn Reynolds. He can get a few minutes of sleep every other week. There's no reason, though, for him to enjoy a social life. Slavery was outlawed in the United States in 1861---but reinstituted when Instapundit started posting on the Internet. The hell with what Ayn Rand thought. Some people are meant to completely dedicate themselves to the community. Reynolds should be glad that he’s not put into chains. Damn it, our needs must be met.

I'd just add that all three of you have earned bookmarks on my system. You have done a great job for Glenn. Personally, I like the higher percentage of longer posts.

Holy $@$#, MJT!!

You linked my site on INSTAPUNDIT??? I'm way not worthy, but thanks for the nod.

I understand your awe of the great Glenn Reynolds, but trust us- you got At LEAST what he gots. You're doing a damn fine job over there...

Now I know what it's like to be Insta-lanched - it's like having many unexpected guests over for dinner. You have to straighten the place up fast and kick the dust bunnies under the couch.

But it's always nice to have guests (thanks for the link). I guess it's even more tiring to plan all of these visits. You're all doing a great job.

Yeah, but he doesn't have any comments section and that blows. What's the use.

Posted by: David at October 27, 2004 08:12 PM

I stopped reading InstaBlowhard ever since I realized that he really thinks he knows everything, and that he's right about everything. He operates in a bubble on that blog, with no input (comments) from the outside. It's not healthy.

Posted by: Greg at October 27, 2004 08:52 PM

The addition of a comment forum would make an excellent site even better. One of the good things about the blogosphere is you get the collective brilliance and wisdom of many minds. The debate is a good thing. If properly done, the truth will be clearer and held with more conviction. As iron sharpens iron so one man sharpens another.

MJT, that is one of the reasons I stop by here regularly - sometimes just to read.

Thanks.

Greg,

Instapundit a bubble? You should see his email. I do. You, I suppose, will just have to imagine.

There's no bubble over there, believe me.

Posted by: Michael J. Totten at October 27, 2004 09:17 PM

There's no bubble over there, believe me.

Perhaps black hole would be a better analogy. If a story has more than one side you're depending on him to provide the other sides.

Unlike you and your posts, there is currently no way to offer a comment on Jane Galt's post about the story of Russia spiriting away the al Qaqaa explosives, unless I wanted to add an off-topic comment to the end of another post that already has 61 entries. Since I already brought it up, I'll note that the Pentagon spokesman has backtracked from Russian suggestion. Said suggestion was offered up by someone else from... the Pentagon.

Posted by: The Lonewacko Blog at October 28, 2004 12:56 AM

“Since I already brought it up, I'll note that the Pentagon spokesman has backtracked from Russian suggestion.”

The Russians probably did remove the weapons. However, the Bush administration is forced to delicately handle the situation. The United States had an odd couple relationship with Russia during WWII---and we have one today. At the end of the day, we must continue cooperating with Vladimir Putin regardless of his government’s past sins.

Posted by: David Thomson at October 28, 2004 01:29 AM

Lonewacko,

Go over to Jane Galt's blog if you want to comment, just like you're coming over to my blog to comment. Or send her an email. She's nice. She won't bite you.

You think you can "get a decent idea what’s going on in the country, in the world" just by reading Instapundit? I'm beginning to understand how the PIPA report found that so many Bush supporters have fundamental misunderstandings about basic facts.

Posted by: Jeremy at October 28, 2004 05:51 AM

Jeremy -

"...so many Bush supporters have fundamental misunderstandings about basic facts."

John Kerry is left of Ted Kennedy.

He opposed the military transformation that led to the collapse of the Soviet Union. He supported the spread of Sov clients in Central America. He called the Reagan administration a time of moral darkness. He voted to gut intelligence capabilities after the '93 WTC bombings...and showed up for his Intell committee gig less than ten percent of the time. He places U.S. interests a distant second behind some sort of amphorous 'global test' standard. He thinks that Islamic terrorism is a law enforcement problem...and would like to return to the days when it was just a 'nuisance'. Yet he's a candidate for president, with a chance at election.

And you think that Republicans have problems with facts?

Insta-MJT,

Thanks for linking to that Oliver Kamm post.

It's no suprise that sentiments like "where's John Wilkes Booth when you need him?" (even obviously meant to be ironic), is what passes for political discourse amongst the intellecual wing of the far-left pro-theocraticfascist whiners.

I can't believe I'm voting for the guy they want to win. I hate the far-left.

Posted by: SoCalJustice at October 29, 2004 07:02 AM

SoCalJustice,

I'm not sure I understand the term 'pro-theocraticfascist'.

Fascism, as I understand it, is any government that is strikingly similar to Mussolini's style of government. This means that they exalt nationalism above individualism, they use violence, propaganda and censorship and they engage in severe economic and social regimentation. (I double checked with Wikipedia for the best use of terminology).

Theocratic means God Ruled. Theocratic in a government sense, would mean that the government believes itself to be led by God, or god's appointed servant. Ancient Isreal was theocratic, and even under the later monarchy, it was a theocracy (Saul was believed to be anointed (Chosen by god) through Samuel). Any of the Islamic governments today are theocratic, since they believe that they are led by Gods representative.

To say that the Left-Wing are Pro-Theocratic seems to me, to be backwards. It's Mr. Bush, not any Democrat that tralks about God and has made statements that one might construe to mean he thinks he's being led by God. The Left-Wing, on the other hand tends to be anti-religious, in no way do they think that Government is led by God.

Pro-TheocraticFacisism would mean that the far left wing was pushing Nationalisim above all else, and God above all else... I really think that's illogical.

Could you clarify that for me?

Tosk

Posted by: Ratatosk at October 29, 2004 08:13 AM

Tosk:

First, I didn't write the "Left-Wing" - I wrote the "far-left."

The "Left-Wing" includes normal Democrats. The "far-left" does not.

Second, the term that has you in a tizzy is not meant to assume that countries must exhibit all qualities of both full-blown theocracies or Mussolini-style fascist states before the brownshirts of International A.N.S.W.E.R. sign on to their cause. It's meant to describe their proclivity to defend - either by commission or ommision - various brutally repressive (whether in the name of god OR Marx/Stalin) countries.

They happen to support all types of horrific regimes from North Korea to the Sudan. Nary a peep from the "far-left" about the genocides and abysmal condintions in either country. By their actions, the "far-left" (again, and this is important - I'm not talking about Democrats - of which I am one - I'm talking about Communists/Socialists/Chomskybots, etc.) support BOTH any number of ugly theocracies, as well as the last vestige of Communist/Totalitarian hell holes that remain on the planet.

It's not that hard to understand, unless you're willfully trying not to - which seems to be the case now - or just looking to argue for no good reason - which could also be the case.

Clarified yet?

Posted by: SoCalJustice at October 29, 2004 08:30 AM

To revisit the last post, this paragraph should have an AND instead of an OR. It should read:

"Second, the term that has you in a tizzy is not meant to assume that countries must exhibit all qualities of both full-blown theocracies AND Mussolini-style fascist states before the brownshirts of International A.N.S.W.E.R. sign on to their cause."

Posted by: SoCalJustice at October 29, 2004 08:32 AM

Hi, Michael. I just came by from Instapundit, where you wrote about the Chilling Effect.

This is a rant, so anyone who wants elevated discourse, just skip it.

"Chilling effects

I’m just getting over a lingering cold and a few nights of bad sleep, with dreams of my recently deceased sister, so maybe I’m a little testy. Chilling effect. It just dawns on me how contemptible that phrase is. Whenever some lefty –and they’re the only ones I know of who use the term—wants to take an express train to Special Victim Land, s(he) just cries out, “Chilling effect” and then his (or her) own cowardice and sloth, his (or her) unwillingness to stand up and say, “FU: this is what I think anyway”, is decoyed by this piteous wailing. The underlying rule is, “If my evil rightwing enemy asserts him (or her) self, my freedom to say and do whatever the hell I want is massively compromised and the concentration camps (we don’t mention gulags because that was part of a noble experiment gone wrong through patriarchal abuse…)are just waiting to be filled.” And the principle underlying the rule is: Because I am just and virtuous, I am (and must be) powerless, so my rightwing enemy, who loves only power, never justice or virtue, is always both powerful and evil. It’s always his (or rarely her) fault.

Chilling effect. Chilling effect? Chilling effect????!!!! Can you spell Noam Chomsky, Michael Moore, Maureen Dowd….I have to stop, because in George Bush’s Fascist Amerika, there’s no freedom to speak anymore. Patriot Act, you know. God, how it’s dampened the freedom of political discourse……I’m gonna reverse the direction of my breakfast if I don’t stop.

Despite a lot of reasons why I shouldn’t, I’m voting for Dubya on Tuesday. One reason, and only one of several, why I am doing this is to continue to oppress all these poor victims with an effing Chilling Effect. I feel I owe it to them. God, I hope they get it."

Hmmm. I didn't read the questions on the PIPA survey.

I believe that the war against terror will not be won without transforming the culture of the middle east.

I don't believe that Saddam Hussein was behind 9/11, or had any role in planning it. I reserve judgement on whether or not he had advance notice.

I do believe that Iraq was overdue for regime change dating from 1998. The federal government, under the lead of Bill Clinton, thought the same thing. A political gesture, of course, but accurate in that Hussein had violated the GW1 accords. The League of Thugs...sorry, the U.N., had no interest in enforcing their own resolutions and select memebers of the security council were happy to continue lining their pockets while we maintained the 'box' at a cost of billions of dollars, thousands of sorties, and the daily risk of loss of life on the part of U.S./U.K. pilots.

We won't be done with the war on terror until after we remove the mullahs in Iran, the baathists in Syria, and root out Wahabbi Islam's heart in Saudi Arabia...or the curve of expanding democracy impresses muslims living in theocracies/dictatorships now to do the heavy lifting themselves.

Invading Iraq made too much sense not to invade. The tension here about our elections pales to insignificance compared to the mentalstate in Tehran, Damascus, and mosques scattered from Algiers to Indonesia. I believe the president was sincere when he said you are with us in this effort, or against us. The challenge is worldwide. Those western nations willing to do business as usual behind out shield have been forced to put up or shut up.

The enemy has defined victory as the end of Western civilization; you would have to be a really progressive type to continue to think that negotiation has any place in this struggle. Apparently, many still do. There won't be enough of them to win this election for Kerry.

Or for the mullahs.

Oh, BTW, great story up on Drudge right now.

Oh, and "Heh".

Posted by: TmjUtah at October 29, 2004 09:58 AM

SoCalJustice,

I was posting a serious question. It was in response to a made up word that you didn't bother to define. Pro-TheocraticFacist is not a real word. If you don't define made up words, why assume that someone questioning its meaning is trying to wilfully not understand or had gone into a'tizzy'? Perhaps, you should drink less coffee, or smoke more pot. Either way, I recommend that you tone down your blood pressure before you explode like Mr. Creosote with his 'wafer thin mint'.

Of couI agree that the far-left-wing supports far left-wing ideologies (that's why their the far-left-wing).

I am meither near nor far left wing. I do not approve of any facist or theocratic form of government, therefore I can assure you that I was not upset because your statement somehow varied from my personal views. Indeed, it was only the butchering of the English language which prompted me to query the defination of your linguistic gobbledygook.

I think that you could have stated it as "Pro-Theocratic, Pro-Facist" or "Pro-Theocratic/Facist". However, when two words are combined into a single word (like theocraticfacists) it indicates that both words apply together as a single compound word. The meaning of your new bit of language, as defined by the rules of the English language would be that the far left wing is for a government that is somehow Theocratic and Facist at the same time. I don't think that's what you meant to say.

This brings me to a bit of a tangent, not directed at SoCalJustice, but to the speakers of American Language in general.

It seems to me that, made-up words are becomming more and more prevelant in today's society. In many cases the made up word contains no meaning, but acts as a label to apply to people disliked by the person who made up the word.

Neo-Anti-Semite is such a word, made up in the blogsphere, first noticed by me at RL Simon's. It gets applied to people who are not anti-semite, but are not actively opposing some particular anti-semie's views. Michael Moore gets called a Neo-anti-Semite, because (after asking who else benefitted from the War in Iraq (he was talking about Haliburton)when the crowd shouted Isreal, he agreed.

That is not anti-semitism as it is defined in the English Language. So to label Moore, they call him an Neo-Anti-Semite.

President Carter becomes a Neo-Anti-Semtie because he invited Moore to the DNC.

I was concerned that Pro-TheocraticFacist was yet another one of these made up labels. It appears though that SoCal was simply being inprecise.

However, what is it that causes us to believe that its ok to make up new words that truly have no sensible meaning?

Marketing Droids love to make up new words, they usually sound exciting and tend to push their product. Some of the (IMO) less talented musicians seem to use made up words in order to make their songs sound more interesting. 'Bootylicious' seems to do for Destiny's Child, what 'Bubblicious' did for Bubble Gum in the 80's.

Are these new political labels, simply political marketing? If so, should we engage in such activity, or does it reduce our conversation to a gobbledygook of slander and defamation?

Can you engage in meaningful conversation, or does anyone who questions you get tossed into the "Must be Far-Left-Wing" arena?

I really didn't mean to be offensive, I was honestly asking what the hell your were talking about, and was rather disappointed with your rude and uncalled for respopnse. I tried not to be rude in my response (but I was direct), so you respond with "Get over yourself"?

"Can you engage in meaningful conversation,"

Yes. But I'm not that interested in engaging in meaningful conversation with willfully obtuse, squirrel-obsessed individuals.

You ask:

"or does anyone who questions you get tossed into the "Must be Far-Left-Wing" arena?"

You seem to this problem of putting words into other people's mouths. I don't recall ever writing that you "must be far-left-wing."

I have written that you are "willfully obtuse" and "obsessed with squirrels."

I have enaged in meaningful conversation with people on the far-left who are neither.

Posted by: SoCalJustice at October 29, 2004 11:37 AM

Indeed, SoCal I was wrong you did not call me far left wing, you said "It's not that hard to understand, unless you're willfully trying not to - which seems to be the case now"

I falsely assumed that if you believed me to be willfully trying not to understand, it was because my views, you assumed, were more closely aligned to those whom you were slandering. My fault, I withdraw the statement "Can you engage in meaningful conversation, or does anyone who questions you get tossed into the "Must be Far-Left-Wing" arena?"

I am still unsure why you believed me to be willfully trying not to understand you new word, nor did I understand why you believed me to be in a 'tizzy'. I think that I explained why the word made no sense, but perhaps from your interpertation and neuro-linguistic programming it actually makes sense to you.

As for wether or not I'm a squrirrel... Have you met me? Do you know if, when I'm referring to myself as a squirrel, I mean that literally or anthropomorphicly?

In fact, do you even know who Ratatosk is? After all, I am not 'just' a squirrel....

Sometimes people use metaphors. When said people are Discordians, they sometimes use strange metaphors.

Then again... I do like nuts.

Actually, my nickname has been with me for about 12 years. My old mentor, a brilliant engineer named Wayne Ely (Chief Engineer for WABC New York in the 60's and 70's; Chief Engineer for all Ohio University broadcasting stations in the late 70's and 80's), began calling a small group of students 'Squirrels' because he said we were nuts. After he saw how well I could work my way around computer security systems and physical security systems he began calling me 'The Squirrel' (since I was like a squirrel after a bird feeder). Eventually, in my brief life as a black hat hacker, I had the hacker name 5qu1rr3l (squirrel). Finally, once I became a Discordian, I used a random method to decide my Pope name (since I'm an authorized Pope)What should pop up but,'Ratatosk, Squirrel of Discord', from the old Norse legend about the squirrel that runs up and down the Worlds Tree Yggsdrasil, causing chaos between the eagle in the branches and the snake in the roots (both the eagle and the snake wanted to destroy the tree).

I think its an apt description of what I like to do for my beloved goddess Eris. I poke and prod at greyfaces here, I poke and prod at greyfaces on other blogs, I poke and prod at workmates and everyone else.

So, I'm not so much obsessed with Squirrels, as plagued with squirrel nicknames. Its a curse and a heavy accorn to bear.

Posted by: Ratatosk at October 29, 2004 11:54 AM

I wrote that you're a "squirrel obsessed individual."

You write: "I'm not so much obsessed with squirrels...."

My mistake. Clearly. You have my humble apologies.

SoCalJustice,

I wouldn't say clearly, it certianly seems, from the point of view of anyone who has a brief aquaintance with me online, that I would have a squirrel obsession.

Oddly though, I don't have a single stuffed squirrel, squirrel tail, pictures of squirrels or anything else (I don't even think I've been tempted to buy such things). I don't make squirrel noises (well, not on a regular basis).

Its ok if you call me obsessed, as long as you don't call me an Pro-IslamoFacistTheocratic Squirrel, we'll be fine. ;-)
