Programming Note

This coming week starting Monday I will be guest blogging at Instapundit. Jane Galt and Ann Althouse will join me.

Glenn Reynolds will be out of the country for a while. Somebody has to hold down the fort during the runup to the election. Thanks for inviting me, Glenn. I’ll try real hard not to break yer blog.

I’ll probably post here, too, but the main event will be there.

In the meantime, I’m sailing to Gig Harbor first thing Saturday morning. The weather is going to be awful. It sure won't be boring...

Have a great weekend. And see you on Instapundit.

Posted by Michael J. Totten at October 22, 2004 06:25 PM

Congrats for your guest blogging gig - and for getting a chance to sail, even if the weather is not so nice. If the wind is steady, it might be fun.

Posted by: mary at October 23, 2004 10:09 AM

From one sailor to another: the only bad weather is no wind, so long has you have the proper gear and an experienced crew. Good luck, be safe, and have fun.

Congrats, dontlet it go to yer head. ;) Cheers.

On November 2, the entire civilised world will be praying, praying Bush loses. And Sod's law dictates he'll probably win, thereby disproving the existence of God once and for all. The world will endure four more years of idiocy, arrogance and unwarranted bloodshed, with no benevolent deity to watch over and save us. John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald, John Hinckley Jr - where are you now that we need you?

Posted by: British Leftie at October 23, 2004 04:17 PM

Michael, it's official. You have arrived as a member of the blogging elite.

British Leftie...go screw yourself.

Michael, Have a good time at instapundit next week. Just don't get to comfortable over there.

British Leftie, you should be in Jail.

Posted by: Cathy at October 23, 2004 04:50 PM

Instapundit? What an ironic coincidence. The other day I advanced the argument that a subtle form of anti-Semitism pervade the John Kerry campaign. Glenn Reynolds linked to the following piece by Charles Krauthammer:

“Think about it: What do the Europeans and the Arab states endlessly rail about in the Middle East? What (outside of Iraq) is the area of most friction with U.S. policy? What single issue most isolates America from the overwhelming majority of countries at the United Nations?

The answer is obvious: Israel.

In what currency, therefore, would we pay the rest of the world in exchange for their support in places such as Iraq? The answer is obvious: giving in to them on Israel.

No Democrat will say that openly. But anyone familiar with the code words of Middle East diplomacy can read between the lines.”

You're probably aware of this, but I just thought I'd tell you that your site was all wonky this morning. For a few hours all I got was a message from your hosting service. When your blog finally came back, multiple comments on this post and the last few before it were lost.

Just thought I'd let everyone know.

Posted by: Eric Deamer at October 23, 2004 07:10 PM

Yes Michael, I experienced the same thing that Eric is speaking about. There are still some missing messages.

Good luck with the blogs and your upcoming trip. A thought. I worked for a large corporation for 30 years. People who made as many mistakes as the current leadership lose their jobs (as well as many who didn't make any mistakes). The story about the Iraqi officer graduates being shot in the head brings it all to a head. Would anyone not think that a busload of new, bright graduates would have some kind of armed escort? Does anyone think that this will encourage even more to serve the "new" Irag? When you don't have enough troops, you don't have enough troops! I read plenty of military history and history will not be kind to the post war management in Iraq.

Posted by: Ray Stokes at October 24, 2004 07:05 AM

“People who made as many mistakes as the current leadership lose their jobs (as well as many who didn't make any mistakes).”

You have a point which seems at least halfway plausible. Unfortunately, the highly anti-Semitic Democratic Party did not nominate Joseph Libermann---my preferred candidate. We are instead presented with John Kerry, a man who instinctively appeases our nation’s enemies. George W. Bush may indeed leave something to be desired---but he’s the lesser of evils this time around.

Posted by: David Thomson at October 24, 2004 07:56 AM

How anti-Semitic is the John Kerry campaign? Well, enough to get the endorsement of the far right-wing ,“The American Conservative.” Do you have to take my word on this? Nope, look for yourself:

“But neoconservatism now encompasses much more than Israel-obsessed intellectuals and policy insiders. The Bush foreign policy also surfs on deep currents within the Christian Right, some of which see unqualified support of Israel as part of a godly plan to bring about Armageddon and the future kingdom of Christ. These two strands of Jewish and Christian extremism build on one another in the Bush presidency—and President Bush has given not the slightest indication he would restrain either in a second term. With Colin Powell’s departure from the State Department looming, Bush is more than ever the “neoconian candidate.” The only way Americans will have a presidency in which neoconservatives and the Christian Armageddon set are not holding the reins of power is if Kerry is elected.”

Congrats Michael,
I might actually go back to checking out Instpundit for a while. Hope you can bring some "centrism" and/or balance to what has become another rather dreary RW megaphone....

Posted by: Tano at October 24, 2004 02:27 PM

what has become another rather dreary RW megaphone

I know. All that pro-gay marriage stuff, and that pro-federally funded stem cell research stuff, and the anti-drug war stuff, and the pro-human cloning, pro-nanotechnology stuff. Yeah, just another dreary "RW" megaphone. Coming from a dreary DNC-talking point megaphone that's particularly rich.

Posted by: Eric Deamer at October 24, 2004 02:34 PM

Yeah, you are right Eric. I shouldnt have said RW megaphone, since that can be variously defined. Since I cant be bothered to define the precise descriptor for Insta, lets just leave it as "dreary pro-Bush megaphone".

Posted by: Tano at October 24, 2004 02:43 PM

Bush = right wing

instapundit = Bush

get it you fascist?

The Bush foreign policy also surfs on deep currents within the Christian Right, some of which see unqualified support of Israel as part of a godly plan to bring about Armageddon and the future kingdom of Christ.

David Thompson,

Whenever I read a Leftist analysis of the "christian right", of which the likes of you would probably accuse me of belonging to, I just have to chuckle.

I should be offended at the caricature you portray I guess, because your "analysis" of the christian right is straight out of a comic book; but my offense turns to amusement because I know that if Leftists have so little understanding of their enemy, as they do of the christian right -- instead you indulge in caricatures -- then you have little chance of beating us.

Posted by: David at October 24, 2004 06:11 PM

"The Bush foreign policy also surfs on deep currents within the Christian Right, some of which see unqualified support of Israel as part of a godly plan to bring about Armageddon and the future kingdom of Christ.

David Thompson,"

Excuse me, but I did not utter the above sentence. On the contrary, these are the words of the editors of the extreme right-wing publication, "The American Conservative." They are providing the "Leftist analysis" which you consider "straight out of a comic book." Perhaps you should complain to them.

Posted by: David Thomson at October 24, 2004 07:54 PM

You know, guys, this argument of yours is pretty dumb. The American Conservative doesn't provide leftist analysis. They're paleo-con central and their endorsement of John Kerry simply says he is at least somewhat more of an isolationist than the current President. That does say something hugely profound about the fact that Kerry's main message right now is essentially a "return to normalcy", but that doesn't in and of itself make John Kerry an anti-semite.

So, in conclusion, let's wrap this up:

-John Kerry not anti-semitic. Just bad candidate.
-The American Conservative not leftist. Only just as bad.
-This whole debate is dumb.

Posted by: Grant McEntire at October 24, 2004 11:34 PM

And, Tom, don't call Eric a fascist. Maybe that was supposed to be sarcasm, I don't know. But Eric is only a right-wing nutjob, so get a grip.

Posted by: Grant McEntire at October 24, 2004 11:36 PM

Tom Jones,

Are you being serious or sarcastic when you say Eric Deamer is a Nazi? Do tell.

"That does say something hugely profound about the fact that Kerry's main message right now is essentially a "return to normalcy", but that doesn't in and of itself make John Kerry an anti-semite."

Who said that John Kerry is a per se anti-Semite? My point is that a very large number of his followers are hostile toward Israel---and if you take their arguments to their logical conclusion---are anti-Semitic.

You seem to conveniently ignore the fact that the ultra-conservatives are not merely "isolationists," but also blame Israel for many of our troubles with the nihilisitc Muslims. So does a large part of the Kerry campaign.

Once there lived a village of creatures along the bottom of a
great crystal river. Each creature in its own manner clung tightly to
the twigs and rocks of the river bottom, for clinging was their way of
life, and resisting the current what each had learned from birth. But
one creature said at last, I trust that the current knows where it is
going. I shall let go, and let it take me where it will. Clinging, I
shall die of boredom.
The other creatures laughed and said, Fool! Let go, and that
current you worship will throw you tumbled and smashed across the
rocks, and you will die quicker than boredom!
But the one heeded them not, and taking a breath did let go,
and at once was tumbled and smashed by the current across the rocks.
Yet, in time, as the creature refused to cling again, the current
lifted him free from the bottom, and he was bruised and hurt no more.
And the creatures downstream, to whom he was a stranger, cried,
See a miracle! A creature like ourselves, yet he flies! See the
Messiah, come to save us all! And the one carried in the current
said, I am no more Messiah than you. The river delight to lift us
free, if only we dare let go. Our true work is this voyage, this
But they cried the more, Saviour! all the while clinging to
the rocks, making legends of a Saviour.

Although written many years ago, Lady Chatterley's Lover has just been
reissued by the Grove Press, and this pictorial account of the
day-to-day life of an English gamekeeper is full of considerable
interest to outdoor minded readers, as it contains many passages on
pheasant-raising, the apprehending of poachers, ways to control vermin,
and other chores and duties of the professional gamekeeper.
Unfortunately, one is obliged to wade through many pages of extraneous
material in order to discover and savour those sidelights on the
management of a midland shooting estate, and in this reviewer's opinion
the book cannot take the place of J. R. Miller's Practical

Hippogriff, n.:
An animal (now extinct) which was half horse and half griffin.
The griffin was itself a compound creature, half lion and half eagle.
The hippogriff was actually, therefore, only one quarter eagle, which
is two dollars and fifty cents in gold. The study of zoology is full
of surprises.
