When I said Castro might not make it into the top 20 of 20th Century Dictators, it was a joke -a back handed compliment. So was the part about it being 40 years since he threatened us with nukes.

It was not an attempt to defend or apologize for Castro and in fact it was meant as a sort of parody of those who do, like Robert Redford. Afterall, just because you're not ranked in the top 20 of murderous tyrants of the 20th Century, it doesn't mean that you can't be plenty murderous and plenty tyranical. It's just that there's a lot of tough competition in that category.
