Hanging With the Cool Kids

I dearly love living in Portland. Almost everything about it is great - the city, the neighborhoods, the restaurants, the coffeehouses, the arts scene, the microbreweries, the friendly people, the lush scenery, the ocean and mountains nearby, and the climate. But I do have one complaint. It isn’t much of a writer’s town.

Los Angeles is a writer’s town. So it’s a great place for me to hang out. I spent a long weekend down there at La Casa de Roger L. Simon and got to enjoy the company of some of L.A.’s finest writers and bloggers: Roger (obviously), his wife Cheryl, Matt Welch, Emmanuelle Richard, Marc Danziger (aka Armed Liberal), Cathy Seipp, and the Dark Lord himself Charles Johnson. Marc Cooper and Megan McArdle (who lives in New York) were scheduled to be there, too, but they couldn’t make it. Both were missed.

It’s normal to write in Los Angeles. At least that’s how it feels when I’m hanging out in a room full of writers. In Portland it’s strange. I can’t talk shop when I’m home unless I do it by email or phone.

So thanks, y’all, for having me down there and indulging me. Don’t take each other’s company for granted.

I'm a writer too; just not a very good one.

(Sigh, me too! or is it, me neither?)

Michael, care to try a "travel report" about what writers talk about when they talk shop -- sort of a news report example?

If you have a good tutorial you like on How To Be Good Writer, that would be interesting too.

i just got back from a short vacation in Redondo Beach, myself. I scribbled pages of stuff. (not for my blog, just pages of writing). I came back to Coos County and it was like i had eaten a huge block of cheese- nothing more came out.

I have no idea what it is, the LA vs. here thing for writing. Anything i write in Oregon is just mean, rude, obnoxious stuff. I write everything else when i go visit family in LA though. I mean everything.

I kind of think it might be because LA is a huge variety of places, people and things to look at, hear, talk to, and experience. Oregon always seems sort of homogenous to me.

Posted by: pril at September 26, 2004 05:37 PM

Uh, Michael, I don't think you know the right people in Portland. Katherine Dunn, Richard Meltzer, Chuck Palahniuk, Todd Grimson, Rene Denfeld, David James Duncan, Tiffany Lee Brown -- most of these are novelists, but many have also written nonfiction now and then. Mikal Gilmore is from here. Ursula LeGuin and Sallie Tisdale (though they compose, with many acolytes, rather their own sect). Adam Parfrey (Apocalypse Culture and Feral Press, which published for instance the biography of Ed Wood from which Tim Burton made his film) lived here for many years, down in the Pearl. Jim Goad was here for a long time (this is where he was arrested, up on NW Skyline). Jimmy McDonough (biography of Neil Young) is on a farm nearby. Karen Karbo lives here. Many more.

Political writing, if that's your measure, may be a different thing. Political blogs. Sure, I guess that's a different world.

Speaking of the Dark Lord, he recently pointed out more blatant MSM bias as they profile the world of blogs, but only Liberal ones apparently:

Just my two cents worth - I too live in Portland, I have almost my entire life (born there, short stints living elsewhere). I HATE what they have done with this city and with the state. I'm working hard at finding a job elsewhere, hopefully by or before the end of the year - since you like it, enjoy it. It's not the same wonderful city I grew up in, it's gone in the wrong direction IMHO; oh, I'm not a writer.

Posted by: mike from oregon at September 26, 2004 09:08 PM

P.S. I like your writing.

Posted by: mike from oregon at September 26, 2004 09:12 PM

I also like your writing, but I have to say that Portland was our worst experience on our recent motorhome tour of the west coast from San Diego to Vancouver. We spent about 2 hours there, getting lost in the maze of flyovers, going round in circles in one way streets, and trying to find somewhere to park for less than $25 an hour (they claimed we took up 3 spaces in a 24' motorhome), before fleeing east to the lovely Columbia Gorge.
(This is Portland, Oregon; I don't know Portland, Maine.)

Posted by: ilana at September 26, 2004 10:35 PM

Hi Michael,

I live in Portland as well. (Wilsonville, actually.)

I will officially go on record to say that there are at least 250 places in the US that I'd rather live. I won't name them here for lack of space. Portland is anti-business and about as liberal as you can get on the west coast without being in driving distance from the Golden Gate.

The weather is atrocious most of the time. The roads aren't all that great. Traffic isn't the worst (Seattle gets that nod) but for a city our size, it should be better. We've twiddled away hundreds of millions of dollars on a public transportation system that looks good on paper and gets our name in the international papers more often, but only serves about 1% of the population. Our urban growth boundary is anti-progress and forces people to live to close to one another. Makes our architecture look like it was designed by Lilliputions.

We have a durth of eating choices. Hardly ANY large scale family entertainment choices. The list goes on and on.

Good things... the view of Mt Hood. It's green and the trees are beautiful. Proximity to the ocean and desert.

That about raps up the good things.

Believe me, I'm a VERY positive person, but if it weren't for my parents and my wife's family, I wouldn't live here for a million dollars.

Now COLORADO! That's the place to be. :-)

Posted by: Dan Sherman at September 26, 2004 11:10 PM

Wow, that post really brought out the anti-Portland in people. It's odd. I hardly ever meet anyone who isn't happy here.

Dan, a major part of your problem is that you're in Wilsonville. I'd be miserable there, too. Wilsonville is what the Urban Growth Boundary was designed to prevent - too late! Dearth of eating choices? You should move to my neighborhood (Hawthorne). Or NW 23rd. Or Sellwood. Or the Pearl.

Posted by: Michael J. Totten at September 27, 2004 01:26 AM

I'd have to agree with everything Dan said - as for the areas that you mentioned Michael - a decade ago those areas would have been called yuppie. I'm not sure what the new name for those areas, frequented by people who think they are better than everyone else, is now - but that is the attitude I get when I go to Hawthorne. Pearl - ugh, a very strange place, frequented by some very urban folks. Maybe that's my problem with Oregon, I was born here and I remember wanting to own a small bit of acreage and to live in the country. Oregon doesn't want you to do that, they want to stuff everyone into little boxes, side by side and on top of each other. If I wanted to live that way I would move to New York or D.C. - I hate what they have done to this beautiful state.

Thanks for a place to vent.

Posted by: mike from oregon at September 27, 2004 06:36 AM

You know, people should realize that the proper name of the city in which Michael lives is "Portlandoregon"?

As a proud Mainer, I wouldn't have it any other way...

Posted by: Peter at September 27, 2004 07:53 AM

No Peter, the name of the city that Michael (and I) live in is called "Moscow on the Willamette" - although on maps it's called Portland Oregon.

From what I've heard, Maine has become rather progressive, er, liberal (I get the two phrases mixed up all the time) too, is that correct?

Posted by: mike from oregon at September 27, 2004 01:55 PM

To my fellow Portlanders who came in here to complain: I'm astonished at this. I am constantly amazed at how much better I think this city is compared to what it used to be. And I'm not seeing this "anti-business" climate at all. Portland has more money than it has ever had. (I'm ignoring the dot-com bust because that had nothing to do with Portland's politics.)

I have watched one neighborhood after another move from the slum column into the middle-class. Have you been to the N Mississippi neighborhood recently. That part of town went from crack-house central to middle class during the recession. And what happened around Alberta in the past six years is nothing short of astonishing. That neighborhood was hell on wheels only a few years ago. Now it's the hottest real estate market in town.

Posted by: Michael J. Totten at September 27, 2004 02:13 PM

MJT: "I have watched one neighborhood after another move from the slum column into the middle-class."

I believe the word you want is "gentrification". As with just about everything else, it has its good points and its bad.

I am really surprised that there are no (or very few) venues that would fulfill your literary desires, especially where you say you are. I used to live on 75th between Powell and Division and went to the Hawthorne area quite a bit. "Nature's" (or "Wild Oats" now, I guess) on Division was about the only place that sold my husband's favorite beer.

Although I'm a born-and-raised Idaho farm girl and, still, a conservative, I have always liked the more "bohemian" aspects of Portland. It's fun and different, but it can get a bit too much and too tiring at times. I lived in Houston for about 10 years before we moved back up here to the GPNW, and although Houston is a HUGE city, Portland seems to be more of a "city" than it. Now I'm in the more conservative "no-man's land" right across the river; we're affected by Olympia, but all attention is towards Portland.

Hope you find what you're looking for...

Posted by: cardeblu at September 27, 2004 04:05 PM

Cardeblu,

Well, like I said I love Portland. I just don't have many other fellow writers to talk shop with. There are a few around, but not as many as in a huge city like Los Angeles or New York.

Posted by: Michael J. Totten at September 27, 2004 05:23 PM

If you lived in L.A. and had to pay their real estate prices, you might have to cut back on your writing and take a second job just to pay the mortgage. That makes cheaper Portland a good town to practice your skills and Possum Trot, Alabama even better. If I had a preference, I would choose to live in a medium sized college town in the South--like Tuscaloosa or Athens.

Posted by: Woody McNair at September 28, 2004 10:09 AM

Michael, I would like to sit down with you sometime and talk about Portland. To be real, I don't ever expect something like that to happen (you're a big time writer and I'm an unemployed, unhappy Oregonian). Someday you'll realize how poorly they manage the money they get both in the state and this particular city. Love your writing though.

A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is "blogging" and someone who keeps a blog is a "blogger." Blogs are typically updated daily using software that allows people with little or no technical background to update and maintain the blog. Postings on a blog are almost always arranged in chronological order with the most recent additions featured most prominantly.

Anxiety and Medication
Many a time it happens that people complain us that we have not been treating them well, or may
be our attitude has changed, or that we keep on shouting at others without any solid reason, we
may just burst into tears and take verybody by surprise due to trivial impediments. When ever any situation like this crops up in our life and continues for a long time, it definitely makes our mental state more restless and worrisome. At times we may also feel that this is not ‘I’--the
same person, who ha become so irritable for others now.Even though we may realize that there’s something wrong with us, some strong nervous disorder like anxiety or depression, but still may be shy to go and visit a physician or a psychiatrist, just because we may not be comfortable to go and see the physician personally and talk about our mental state. Recently I came to know that there are such sites who not only get you physically and neurotically examined by their own team of doctors but also prescribe the required dosages of the anti anxiety drug http://www.buy-xanax-online-now.com (xanax), online. So isn’t it really great that your prescription is requested online and you don’t need to see your regular doctor. Your personal information stays personal and your local pharmacist or physician won’t even know about it! Moreover you would have to pay just for the required dosages of http://www.buy-xanax-online-now.com (xanax) and no consultation fee for consulting the physician. So don’t shy away to get yourself treated for your anxiety.
http://www.buy-xanax-online-now.com (Buy xanax online) now and forget about the complaints of our changed behavior from your near and dear ones. Lead a normal carefree life as earlier.

Cerebral diseases are growing these days!! Due to: fast life style, decreasing of society values, rise of personal focus etc. It's sad to see the downfall of human. The deep chasm between the worldly growth and pious growth is main reason for all this. Due to this most of the people (adult and teenagers) are suffer from anxiety disorders There are so called medicines like xanax, valium , Zoloft which may probably help give temporary relief to patients suffering from anxiety disorders. . But does the answer really lie in these medicines?Almost certainly NO!. I would inform such patients to help themselves with yoga and meditation. This possibly is the surest way to relieve cerebral pressure. You can get remidies from here.We offer best xanax deals in the world , You can buy xanax, buy valium rather i should say cheap xanax and cheap valium online from http://www.valiumhome.com.
