So Much For My Day Job

It finally happened. I got downsized. The entire department at my day job was axed at 9:00 Tuesday morning.

I saw it coming years ago when the high tech economy imploded. I’m surprised I lasted as long as I did. It was, I think, the seventh round of layoffs that finally got me. That’s not so bad. There’s no reason for me to take it personally.

There’s also no reason for me to get bent out of shape about it.

A few years ago I finally grew up enough that I could start saving money. So when the recession began I opened another bank account and started rat-holing the stuff. I didn’t get rich in high tech (I never made a penny from stock options, even though I had thousands of them), but the job was a cash cow all the same. The bank account that began as my own private unemployment insurance has transformed itself into a career-change paycheck-generator. The money was nice, but that job was in my way. Now it isn't. I won’t have much money to buy anything, but I will be able to live a long time without another day job.

It’s a little bit freaky, though. I feel like a fish that spent his whole life in an acquarium who’s been suddenly released into the sea.

I’ve been making money writing on the side, and I have a few other tricks up my sleeve. When I called my wife at work to tell her what happened I thought she might freak out. Instead she said “Woo hoo!” She is an angel. And she knows what this means. This is great news for me. Really, it is.

I am happy.

Well, I'm gald you're so upbeat about it, and I hope you get anotehr job soon, but I guess you can enjoy the leisure time for now.

I may be in a similar predicament when I get out the Army, but I will be in the Reserves and I can get started with grad school so that won't be a problem, plus I know where I can stay if I need to for a while.

Hmm... It seems insensitive to say "I envy you" without saying "sorry to hear you lost your job", so I'll say both. I'm standing on the same cliff edge but without the benefit of a push (yet). I'm sure I'm not the only one interested in how things work out for you as one of the gainfully unemployed.

Michael -

I was a land surveyor up until January of this year. Truly a path-of-least resistance life for me, but that's not important now.

If you were to give one bit of advice to somebody who wanted to write for a living, what would it be?

Don't say "Learn when NOT to use commas", please. I know that already. My wife was a technical writer back down the road and does the editing.

Best of luck on your new path. For what it's worth I've always benefitted from a layoff, measured either by salary or company conditions, or both.

Well, I'm not the best person to ask because I haven't yet pulled this off unless you count technical writing, which I don't.

Even so, here's my advice. Find a good mentor and write every day for several years in a row.

One of my own mentors told me that each professional writer writes a million words of crap (the equivalent of ten books) before getting published. So write a million words as fast as you can. It took me a long time. And my success is pretty modest so far.

I spent most of my time studying fiction, by the way. Here's a sample. I am NOT an expert in fiction, that's just where I got started. I think it served me better than J-school would have. I never did take any journalism classes. Not one. Believe me, that was on purpose. But I must also tell you that my undergraduate degree in English didn't teach me a damn thing about writing (I did read some good books, though) and I didn't learn anything in creative writing classes, either. I was lucky enough to make friends with a couple who are both professional novelists, and they taught me everything I know in workshops and in one-on-one sessions at their kitchen table. They are still my friends fifteen years later, but they will always be first and foremost my teachers.

I don't know how you can find someone like that. I was very lucky. I lived in a writer's town (Eugene, Oregon). Missoula, Montana and Minneapolis, Minnesota are also writer towns but I don't know how open the communities are to outsiders. Eugene is very open. I can hook anyone up who lives in Oregon if they are interested and don't mind learning from geeky science-fiction writers.

Enjoy the time. When you decide it's time to getting to doing more? Don't find a job. Take one of your passions and create something. Our parents ways of thinking about employment was never the norm. Just a 50 year aberration in American history.

It's an interesting situation you find yourself in -- a common theme in movies and literature, what will you do now that you're free from the "fishbowl?" Best of luck! I was in a similar situation a bit over two years ago. Only difference was that my previous tech job paid poorly enough that I wasn't able to squirrel away a little nest egg before hand. I'm planning on doing so once I get clear of the debts from my unemployment. Here's hoping this works out well for you!

Sympathies and congratulations.
A strange time for you.I have been there and can truly understand the HAPPY comment.After a VERY short time being on the Titanic becomes old and every day is much less an adventure and more of an annoyance.I gather that is what you have been experiencing since you knew that you and your colleagues were "dead men walking" in your company.
You will surely find another position that will suit your talents and will no longer have the weight of the inevitable dragging you down at work.

As someone who was advised to declare bankrupcy on three different occasions (I never did out of principle), I did finally get on top of things. I say it is good to bust out ot the acquarium and learn even more. You are obviously bright and curious and no doubt will land in green pastures (just avoid the cowpies!) Been there, Michael. The dot.com I was working for a couple of years ago turned turtle, and I lost vacation pay and my last paycheque. Sounds like you're far more prepared than I was, so congrats, enjoy some time to redefine yourself outside of a job.

TmjUtah, I did the writing lifestyle for several years. First and foremost, write and read a LOT. Second, submit what you write. Getting your work rejected is no fun, but you need to have the attitude that all those rejection letters (which you'll get more of than checks, especially early on) are going to be fun to wave in the editors' faces when you're the world-famous author. Third, find some low-hanging rungs in the writing world that pay. You won't get rich that way, but you'll be making some money while learning your craft. Fourth, attend writer's workshops. Not everyone there will be a good writer, but most of them will be good readers. Don't take every criticism to heart, but if you hear it from more than a few of the other writers, it's a good sign you need to fix something.

Michael- My husband just got laid off in the same situation--anticipating it for a year.

It was such a relief when it finally ended. We moved to a low-cost rural area two years ago, and my husband stayed with his mom in the city during the week to go to work.

Now that his job is over, we're going to spend the summer teaching our 3-year old son to fish. There are tons of hi-tech jobs back in the big city...but he's ready to kiss beltway traffic goodbye!!!

Michael: I also recently lost my 4+ years job. I was neither surprised nor too disapointed; the company was losing money and the constant intense travel was wearing me out.

While I have not saved as much as you, between good serverance, sensible living style, unemployment, savings, and my wife's teaching job, we will be fine for a good while.

I may also take a long vacation, at least through the summer before really looking hard. I hope that I can profit from this break as much as you seem to be doing.
