I'm beginning to learn to not trust your absences. They always seem to result in photos that bring on an acute case of homesickness.

Thankfully Southwest now serves Philly, so I can get cheap and easy flights back home. I think I need to take a big vacation this summer and spend a good four days camping in Eastern Oregon and least a few hanging out with my bros in PDX. I wouldn't mind seeing what a real coastline looks like again too (rocks, no sand).

I worked with an extended - family ranching outfit (neighbors back home in Midland) doing end of season gathers in northern New Mexico (Jemez Plateau and caldera). That was way back in the seventies.

Man, I miss those late fall sunrises.

Here in Utah it's time for the Moab Jeep Safari. Even in the middle of a forty vehicle caravan, you can turn around and see a million miles of red rock paradise with nary a soul in sight. Kind of a nice option, when facing a driveline replacement after enjoying the view.

Yep. It's a whole different world in the eastern half of the state. Especially in the Southeastern corner and across the border in Northern Nevada. Real deal cowboys still do their cowboy thing in those parts.

In Portland we've got microbrews, lattes, international cuisine, and the theater. In the east they've got big hats, pickup trucks (they call 'em "rigs"), belt buckles, and shotguns. I don't fit in out there at all, but it's a nice change of pace once in a while. Things are simpler and quieter out there.

Snorkeling: Just west of Lake Tahoe: Loon Lake, 6000 ft., 70-degree (?) water in early August. I used to drink it by the mouthful while snorkeling all day as a kid, risking a little jiardia. Unbelievable taste, unbelievable underwater views.

I once headed up to Twin Lakes on the North Umpqua in mid-June, and the snow was still on the ground! As for the water, even in August, it's a bit too brisk for swimming. It'll be in the 90s, but that water's still a bit too cold to be in too long. So, we usually just went down to the rivers and creeks to jump off the waterfalls over and over again.

As for the cowboys, they're one of the reasons I really like Eastern Oregon. We have a lot of wannabe (and some genuine) cowboys in SW Oregon, but the Eastern Oregon ones are the real deal. If you haven't been to Steens Mountain in SE Oregon, it's definitely worth the long drive (even a long one from Roseburg). Lots of cowboys and some amazing vistas. Looking over the edge of the "mountain" at the Alvord Desert is amazing.

Andrew Sullivan is very smart about politics but he doesn't know military strategy at all. A larger force would require a substantially greater logistical tail and be much more difficult to command. The smaller force we are using is much easier to supply and direct than a giant force would be. By keeping things small, rational, effective action can be taken by commanders at the scene. Bigger is rarely better than smarter.

As for Anthony Cordesman, the "insufficient planning" argument fundamentally fails one key question: Is Iraq better off today than it was one year ago? Since a "sufficient" plan would have taken at least another year of Iraqi suffering and privation, what good is achieved by waiting?

Additionally, the President of the United States with the resolved support of the US Congress decided that allowing Saddam Hussein to remain in power was an unacceptable threat to the security of the United States. Rather than wait for the threat to become imminent, the President decided to invade. Another key failure of the "planning" whinge is that it does not acknowledge the primacy of self-defense. It argues quality of life for Iraqi's in a discussion of survival of citizens of the United States.

I am so tired of the "no plan" meme. Iraq is in chaos. You can't plan anti-chaos in advance. But you can react to it smartly if you're on the ground and flexible.

No "mea culpas" will be forthcoming. Markus, if you expected Iraq to instantly become Costa Rica that's your own fault. That was never in the cards.

Patrick Lasswell -- you are missing my point, which has been argued at length by war supporters like Joe Lieberman, Joe Biden and Thomas Friedman for months now. The chaos and anarchy of post-Saadam Iraq, along with out knack and misfortune for making enemies out of the people we are trying to help, has made it impossible for our small force to take "rational, effective action."

There is not excuse for us not being ready, for this was a war that we did not need to start when we did. Not only was Iraq not an imminent threat, it was not going to become one for sometime. I agree that Blix and the UN inspectors were not a permanent solution to the Saadam problem, but once the United States got them back in as a result of THREATENING war, their continued presence would have precluded Iraq developoing WMD's. With them in, there was no reason that we could not have waited six months, or a year, or however long it took until adequate post-war plans were in place.

And it would not have even taken that long to prepare. The fact is that even if we had to invade in March 2003, for political reasons or whatever, we could have prepared effectively for post-war Iraq. All it would have taken would have been for the President to overrule the arrogant bastards in the Vice President's office, the Pentagon, and the American Enterprise Institute, and defer to the military itself, led by Tommy Franks, who wanted a much larger invading force; and to the State Department's Middle East experts, who drew up detailed plans for post-war Iraq, based on likely scenarios that have mostly come to pass. Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Feith, and the rest of the gang willfully ignored those plans, out of hubris, and because they were drawn up by State and didn't provide an Iraq led by Chalabi that was willing to establish diplomatic relations with Israel.

I'm frankly amazed at the content I've seen on Fallujah on the teeny bit of TV time I've had today. This is getting built up to be Anzio or something.

It's exactly the same thing. Well, except the enemy is a fragment of Iranian - supported Shia muslims attempting to execute a Somalia maneuver, and not the Hermann Goering Division dug in on high ground with the logistics support of a modern army. Except that with the exception of the Sunni triangle and spot violence in some major towns that were the traditional tribal or political roots for Hussein, the country is largely self administering now.

Except that at Anzio we set out by mistake to take an EASY way to fight one battle in a larger war (and nobody seemed to look at a map)...whereas before we ever went to Iraq we were told, our represenatives were told and then VOTED that the mission would be expensive, dangerous, and would require the will, the discipline, and most of all the support of the nation to ensure success.

I wish there were other, less damning, issues that could be politicized for Democratic political goals, but they seem to be so plumb out of winners that all they can do is hope for battlefield reverses they can somehow nurture into defeat...

I think we would be having FEWER problems with the Sunnis if we had more troops in their areas, and FEWER problems with the Shi'ites if we had planned post-war reconstruction better. It was in evitable we would make huge mistakes and have a big learning curve -- we simply didn't know very well what was going on inside Iraq after 44 years of Baathism. But I don't know why we would dismiss what little knowledge we did have from our Arab experts in the State Department. I'm having a hard time finding a copy of the State Department's Future of Iraq project online, but I think rather than calling for a dictatorship, it simply placed its emphasis on restroring order in the country. And I find it hard to see how the Pentagon's plans for installing Chalabi involved democratic processes either.

Here's a mistake for you, from the pages of the Los Angeles Times. This one is (unsurprising to me) largely the State Department's fault.

WASHINGTON — Last summer, as Iraqis sweltered outside, the Coalition Provisional Authority met in the marbled corridors and air-conditioned offices of one of Saddam Hussein's former palaces to hash out how to fund political parties. The State Department was adamant, insisting that the CPA should maintain "an even playing field" and should not favor one party over another. Parties affiliated with the Iraqi Governing Council's militant Islamists and liberal secularists should receive the same treatment. There should be no special consideration given to groups seeking to unite Iraqis rather than dividing them by ethnicity or sectarian affiliations.

This may sound like the way to ensure fair elections. But while the CPA has maintained its neutrality, our adversaries have shown no such compunction.

The CPA's evenhandedness may be well-intentioned, but to a society weaned on conspiracy theories, the United States' failure to support liberals and democrats signals support for the Islamists. Equal opportunity may exist in Washington, but not in Baghdad. Michael -- I'd love to fund only good guys too, but perhaps the CPA decided that helping Abdelaziz Hakim was essential if he was not to turn against them. All sorts of moral dilemmas exist in the real world...it's messy. It appears in retrospect that disbanding Saadam's army and firing mid-level Baathist part members was a terrible thing to do, too.

TMjUtah -- the Pew poll linked below measures all people over 18, not just voters, but it does show a unmistakable slide for Bush from earlier measures using the same criteria. His lowest approval ratings ever:

Regarding the Congressional authorization vote, our representatives voted to give Bush warmaking authority for a hundred different reasons. Some wanted war, others wanted to get inspectors back in, others just wanted win an election. Debate in October 2002 for such an important subject was short and pathetic.

The issue at hand is not a statistical snapshot of polling preferences. It is maintaining the resolve to finish what we set out to do. That's generally easier with a nation pulling toward a common goal but we do not have that situation now.

I agree with MJT in his above on mistakes' but I do have a caveat; in my personal opinion people have been too ready to accept the word mistake in place of the more suitable word obstacle.

Nobody ever said it was going to be easy - least of all this administration. We were shooting Nazis in the street in occupied Germany until well into 1947. The Israelis average a proportional death count (to 9/11) at the hands of terrorists just shy of every two years or so...some years are better, some worse. Fifty years of that....with or without 'engagement' on our part.

Bush commented on Mr. Sadr by name at a post-speech press brief today. I heard the audio. I believe that Mr. Sadr better not count on a knock on the door and "We have a warrant". He's beyond any help an OJ jury could provide.

There's something unmistakeable about a Marine infrantry battalion making an unsocial call. Noisier for a start, and it just gets more exciting from that point on. I wish I was there.

In spite of the reflexive urge to do the Carthage Maneuver after the events of last weekend, we are identifying individuals responsible for discreet crimes. There are over two hundred Iraqis security police with our Marines in order to minimize confusion and needless conflict. This, in the midst of a war our opposition is intent on fighting (and marketing) as a religous jihad.

I'm pretty proud of that. I hope that the sentiments I see in my local community (granted, pretty far right) are shared widely across the nation. We cannot fight this like it was happening to someone else and even pretend to expect to accomplish our goals.

It goes a little something like this:

STAGE ONE: Bush repeatedly and needlessly antagonizes the overwhelmingly popular and democratically legitimate leader of the Iraqi people, the moderate Grand Ayatollah Ali Al Sistani, despite the fact he's shown an abundant willingness to work with Coalition officials and despite that he has repeatedly called for patience and non-violence in dealing with American troops, by and in large due to his hostile views towards Israel. In a nutshell, he's an enemy of Israel but a friend to the United States, he's the only Iraqi with enough popular support to democratically rule over his fellow countrymen, and he's the best of what's around. Not good enough for the Bush Administration though, so he's marginalized.

STAGE TWO: Into the vaccum of power we've created steps the radically anti-democratic and anti-American cleric Moqtada Al Sadr who declares solidarity with Hezbollah and Hamas. Sadr starts printing a newspaper laced with inflammatory anti-American rhetoric. Despite the fact that the newspaper hasn't (reportedly) actually provoked a single attack on US forces or rival Iraqis, we decided to shut it down on the 28th of March. Sadr, as a result, instantly gets protrayed as a pious Muslim hero all across Iraq and throghout the Middle East. All hell breaks loose. We're now, thanks to the Bush Administration, left no choice but to further empower Sadr's cause by calling for his arrest.

STAGE THREE: Grand Ayatollah Sistani ONCE AGAIN calls for peace and non-violence in dealing with Coalition Forces, though, now marginalized, he is forced to rhetorically sympathize with the demonstrators as to hold on to his popular support with the Iraqi people. So, now instead of one broadly popular Iraqi leader we have two. Sistani has been, is being, and will continue to be our go-between with the Iraqi people so long as he is in power. The question now lies in whether or not he will remain in his position of democratic authority in light of Sadr's rise to prominence, a rise indirectly and inadvertently facilitated by the Bush Administration's foolhearty overreactions.

Yes, Michael, chaos cannot be controlled. But it can easily be managed or at least not made any worse than it already is. You know me, man. I'm not some kind of wild-eyed "blame America first" leftist. I call it like it is and I blame whoever is truly to blame, regardless. But we screwed this up, plain and simple.

It will take Sistani to diminish the impact of what we've enabled Sadr to do. What we do with Sadr can't be pretty, can't be easy, and will probably have unintended consequences. Thank President Bush for bringing us to this point.

I think there may be a wee bit of contradiction there, Grant. Oversimplification would be too generous a gimmee.

The most direct route to stop killers is to kill them. The process is unpleasant and expensive but it is the one sure way of making sure they don't kill any more. The only difference between al Qaeda's declaration of war on civilization and al Sadr's recent manifesto could be expressed as "holy moley, we don't even have to negotiate frequent flyer miles to attack them". Better we confront them on their ground with armed troops rather than waiting around for them to execute attacks at their discretion. Their displeasure at facing coordinated military retribution vice blowing up civilians with relative impunity is their problem.

Your Stage One is revisionist at best, dishonest at worst, too. "Democratically legitimate" how, Grant?

I guess I missed the election. He's a respected cleric, yes, but his authority is assumed by diktat; there's no mechanism available to his followers to influence his actions outside of apostasy. That's not democratic legitimacy - that's the pointy end of the definition of tribal backwardness that leaves entire populations at mercy of whatever personality rises to the positions of power within the system.

We pulled a knife out of the heart of a nation. Call it a vacuum if you want, but trying to parse this situation by capitalizing on the absence of elegant perfection at any given moment without acknowledging the necessity of time to make it work is has become a kind of Greek Chorus.

I am referring back to the other insurmountable obstacles that arose over the last couple of years of this war:

By engaging the enemy directly where they live we will enrage the Arab street, and will see bloody revolutin across moderate Islam.

The impossibility that we could eject the Taliban after the Soviets broke themselves over ten years in the mountains of Afghanistan.

The certain humanitarian and refugee crisis that was to come in Afghanistan if we acted to remove the Taliban.

The certain bloodbath we would face in Afghanistan by civil war between warlords.

The thousands of U.S. casulties we would sustain by WMD/the absence of readily located stocks of WMD.

The quagmire we had fallen into when the sandstorms rose on our sixth day of assaults into Iraq.

The slaughter in the streets of Baghdad that would rival the Soviet assault on Berlin.

The impossibility that Muslim cultures can embrace democracy ...except that the adoption of a constitutions recognising government by consent in Afghanistan and Iraq has already happened and at least in Afghanistan they are already self-administering.

Now we have a situation that somewhat relates back to a broad reference to the Arab street...except that it is more accurately described as an externally instigated effort aimed at fomenting unrest or civil war that can in no way benefit Iraqis but only Iran.

Or John Kerry. Certainly not our war aims, or the outlook for security of our troops or the Iraqi civilian population.

Here we go again. I wonder what the issue will be two weeks from now? What new damning, insurmountable failure MUST be acknowledged?

Don't see it happening that way in the end. By passing civil authority to an Iraqi government we avoid the babysitting trap we've been involved in in Kosovo for SEVEN or EIGHT years.

Funny how we never hear much about that situation, isn't it? Especially since we went there to protect muslims from genocide. Now the coin has flipped and you can't buy a column inch in a mainstream U.S. media outlet to discuss what we can do to "easily" manage that particular chaos.

Know this is late so you all probably won't read it or even care- I'm from Enterprise- glad to see such beautiful pictures of my home county! This is the story of the brand from the brand owner:

We acquired that brand when my grandfather Walter Brennan (old time movie and television star – 3 Oscars for Best Supporting Actor) bought Lightning Creek Ranch, down near Imnaha, in 1942. The quarter circle is technically supposed to be located more in the lower left quadrant, but for some reason over the years as Dad made new branding irons he sometimes located it more centrally as shown on the barn... In my understanding of brand hieroglyphics placed at the bottom there it would read “rocking” But he likes it better there. And he shortened and separated the arms of the K to make it more symmetrical and he told me because of how it showed up on the cows – the intersection of all those lines sort of blobbed together into an unidentifiable mess.

Since most people recognize the symbol for “rocking,” people often misread our brand. I’ve heard the forest service employees sometimes jokingly refer to it as “rocking roadkill” because the arms of the K look a little like legs on a bloated carcass. When he first put it up on the barn, the little windows (then white) made it look like a smiling pig, and I’ve heard people call it that too – even after we painted them red.
