Lee Harris, who I think is one of the best columnists at Tech Central Station, got some bad reviews because he doesn't trash America in his new book Civilization and Its Enemies.

Today he takes that criticism to heart and, with tongue planted firmly in cheek, makes excuses for himself.

Too true. Same in London. Each bookstore is loaded with Choamsky, Said, et al, with such wonderful titles as Why Do People Hate America? and narry a one that posits any alternative view.

In the run up to war, the absence of any books condemning Saddam was noticeable- only more prominent space allocated to anti-American books.

And who do you suppose it is that has these anti-American rants by the likes of Moore and Chomsky flying off the shelves? There isn't enough people at ANSWER. The consumers of these books are not the fringe.

Very true. My brother just arrived from Spain and he said he even saw them reading Michael Moore's book in Catalan. That was heartbreaking.

A close friend of mine was getting his undergraduate degree in American history about a decade ago and he told me that the required reading was almost exclusively Zinn, Chomsky, and other blame America-firsters. He actually asked me quite seriously if I thought that racism in the USA was worse today than in the 1960s!

As an aside, this crap is sneaking into pop culture as well. Last year there was an episode of the Sopranos where Tony's son was shown reading from the odious Zinn's book and spouting off anti-American propaganda. Of course, Tony gets angry at the kid, but the clear impression we are given is that the old man is an ignoramus, especially when studious Meadow backs up the son's comments.

I couldn't even watch the usually interesting Ken Burns' series on the settling of the American West, because after the first episode, it was a non-stop orgy of how the white man mistreated the Native Americans, Mexicans, blacks and Chinese.

Isn't ironic that Chomsky, whose cultists often complain that the media is stacked against him, has is books proudly displayed on bookstore shelves. Meanwhile even though the computer thingie at Borders has Derschowitz's books on Terrorism and Israel in stock, it is no where to be seen until I asked the clerck to get them for me [from the back]. I asked her why they weren't on display? She shrugged her shoulders, glared at me nastily and handed me the books -- which I put on the shelves where they belonged, right section, right alphabetical order (I had gotten copy from Amazon a week or so before). I can only assume that when I came back an hour later for chuckles that they were NOT still on the shelf because some one bought 'em. Clearly my experiment was a "success." [In all fairness there were some more widely read conservative titles out in the open, but strange how explicitly anti-chomsky lit is missing]

Hell I did myself. I once put all the Marxism and Socialism books in the humor section.

It took about two months before anybody noticed.

The other day I was shocked by a couple of younger coworkers talking about communism as a viable method of government and spinning the USSR as having many good points - no real response to my citing the butchers bill of uncle Joe, Mao, and Pol Pot - just a mention of how one of them got an 'A' from their thesis in college on same.

I wonder how many minds get sent down dubious paths by such 'intellectuals'. I work with these people and they are friendly, and quite smart in their fields - not really idiots. It is the professors that I want to know more about.
