I feel like I’ve been to lots of places in the world, but sheesh. From the look of these maps, I’ve hardly seen anything.

I’ve been to all the red places.

Before the end of this year I expect to add Puerto Rico, Italy, and Tunisia.

The way to pad it is to visit the big countries. If I didn't have a rule on how a country "counts," briefly discussed here, I could also add Kazakstan, another pretty big one.

I'm pretty happy with my US map, even if it is half of the states, I again, hit a lot of big ones on those road trips from growing up out in Oregon.

Nathan, excellent, then by your criteria, I can count Connecticut, since I've hit a rest stop or two driving during the many drives from Boston to NYC. Otherwise, I never left the car.

I feel like I'm cheating by counting China, since it was "just" Hong Kong I went to. But then I've been to Monaco, Israel, and Singapore, i.e. little red dots, so I guess it evens out.

Michael,

Back in '96 I was touring with a friend in Newfoundland and Labrador. We crossed over to Labrador on the ferry and were driving to Red Bay which is the furthest point north that you can reach by vehicle. On the road, we caught up with an old beatup pickup truck and camper with California tags. As I passed the truck I noticed that it was covered with bumper stickers from various states and provinces. It was being driven by a grey-haired old lady.

A couple hours later we pulled into Red Bay. There's not much to the town. It was orignally established as a Portugese whaling station a few centuries ago. The most prominent feature was the rusting wreck of a ship that had grounded and capsized in the harbor several decades back. After looking around a bit, my friend and I went for a bite to eat at the only restaurant in town. The restaurant had the captain's chair and wheel from the shipwreck proudly on display.

Anyway, while we were eating the little old lady we had passed on the road came into the restaurant and sat down at the table next to ours. We struck up a conversation with her. It turns out she was a 73 year old widow from California. Her husband had died a decade prior. After her husband's death, she started to travel around North America on her own. Somewhere along one of her trips she decided she wanted to visit every state and province. She would put a bumper sticker on her camper for each place she visited. Newfoundandland and Labrador were the last places she had to visit.

I really admired that lady. At a point in life when many are afraid to go to the corner store, she drove across a continent. I felt fortunate to have been there when she completed her journeys. Her map would be 100% red and would include Canada.

You ought to visit Newfoundland some time. Its a great place. Gros Morne is spectacular. The people are wonderful. You'll think your in Ireland right down to the accents.

I'll second the Big Bend motion. Been there twice with friends, one of whom brought his 13" Dobsonian telescope both times. Saw Comet Hyakutake on the second trip - fainter but much huger than Hale-Bopp. Santa Elena Canyon rocks! If you do the hike around Emory Peak, start at the crack of dawn - it's a long hike, especially if you go all the way to the Southern Rim. For more info, check out the park's official site. A map of the park would come in handy - copy the map image from here and PhotoShop it to a smaller printable size (or paste it onto a MS Word document - same effect). Dont' go during Spring Break - too crowded! Go in late March or early April when spring is just starting - it's a desert, after all.

I just might go myself.
