Defending Saddam

Via Jeremy Brown at Who Knew comes this little tidbit.

A French lawyer [Jacques Verges] known for his notorious clients said on Monday he would be ready to defend Saddam Hussein and that the former Iraqi leader must be presumed innocent at any trial.

I understand we’re supposed to presume innocence at trials. But some things are better left unsaid. I’d wonder if Mr. Verges feels embarrassed to say it, but he did defend Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie, the Butcher of Lyon.

He added:

If [Saddam] is judged and treated like a pariah, clearly his defence counsel would have to say 'but this pariah was the friend of all the Western heads of state. He was not only their friend but their ally.’

This is true, and it’s an excellent reason to let Iraqis try him themselves. Long ago Saddam Hussein was an ally of the United States, as well as an ally of the rest of the Western countries. The French government stuck by his side even after the Gulf War, and even after September 11. Make your case, Mr. Verges. Baghdad needs to know what Paris has been up to.

I think that the US should take the heat once and for all. Then we should spit in the eye of anyone who dares to comment on it. Repudiate the actions of those who came before and put the ghosts to rest.

If the United States can't build a policy based on a belief in the future instead of the baggage of the past, nobody can. Instead of dooming the world to an endless, mindless dance of recrimination we should lead. It is one thing to acknowledge the past, but that should not condemn us to live in it forever.

Yes, we supported him, as you said, so did "everyone else." The difference, as Bush indicated in his speech in the UK, is that the time for coddling tyrants for short-term expediency has led the US to Sep 11 and the rest of the world should take note. Accordingly and hopefully, the US is starting to change (though it still overtly coddles the Saudis and the Chinese - grrr, but only the deaf could ignore the hissing toward Beijing and Riyadh from our side of the Atlantic). Meanwhile the "Axis of the Pissy" continues to behave with its normal two-facedness, with nary a mark raised against it from the people who "care" about justice.

It's amazing how the "Left" stereotypically almost uniformly insists that criminals are forever redeemable, and that victims holding grudges are the real block on true justice. However, when it comes to the US & Blairite Britain on their past misjudgments, they are not only forbidden to judge others but must always be permanently judged and condemned forever as the arch uber-criminals of the world-stage. Meanwhile France remains the great conciliator.

So let's here the defense. US and the UK were backstabbing Judases to the poor victim Saddam. While France was true blue to the end as Saddam's last victims were fed feet first into the shredder. Cursed be the USA, and long live French integrity.

I did not dispute that Saddam invaded Kuwait or was a brutal tyrant, but your castigation of the French for being his "pal" (what, were they hanging out playing Xbox together?) even after 9/11 is simply uncalled for. Unless you have some evidence that he was involved in 9/11, (and no, that laughable Standard article doesn't count) you should probably quit trying to imply that he was. Saddam's real crimes are numerous enough that we don't need to add made-up ones to the list. These continued attempts to portray Iraq as part of the War on Terror are beginning to really annoy me. Make a case for the invasion on moral grounds if you wish, but Saddam's ties to terror are among the weakest in the middle east.

This is a pet peeve that drives me crazy. Hussein was never an "ally" At a time when it appeared that Khomenei's Iran was poised to take Bagdhad, the Reagan administration made a strategic decision that American interests were best served by preventing Islamic Shiite Radicals from conquering Iraq and its Oil fields. So we aided Hussein in order to restore the balance. This actually had the effect of ending the war as both sides finally realized neither could win. You may, of course, disagree with the wisdom or even the morality of this policy. But it does not mean he was our "ally". An ally is a country with whom we have a strategic defense relationship. Obviously the countries of Nato are our allies. Stalin's Soviet Union was our ally in WWII. Israel is our ally. Iraq was never our ally.

Regarding "presumption of innocence" - a startling irony. Presumption of innocence is an Anglo idea - the French system is Napoleonic - the accused are presumed guilty and have to present evidence of their innocence. Such is the law in Louisianna - "Presumed Innocent" is a something one shoud not assume.

That the French lawyer insists we presume Saddam innocent is quite funny as it implicates French standards as inferior to ours.
