Doing a search on the Oregonian web site should indicate fairly clearly that my brother, mother, and father exist and that they acknowledge somebody named Patrick to be a part of their family. OryCon does exist, and I am included in several of their historical web sites. All of this assumes that I am in fact the person I claim to be. On the other hand, anybody who was me would certainly not put up with somebody pretending to be me, as is clear from the public record.

What bugged the hell out of me was the revolutionary denouncement of your position. Not that your ideas were mistaken, but that they were deliberately insidious. It still bugs the hell out of me that some people would think it necessary to create a conspiracy in order to express disillusionment with the radical left. Perhaps they need the eggs.

FWIW, Michael, I believe you exist, and no, I don't think you're a DINO. I do have to wonder if you're a traditional "Southern Democrat", though, because you seem to be more aligned with Texas's Charlie Wilson or pre-switch Phil Gramm than with, say, Molly Ivins or Jim Hightower.

(Yeah, they're all Texans. I'm a transplanted Texan in Chicago now. And yeah, it's a particular brand of Southern Democrat in Texas, too, that doesn't jive well with Southern Democrats in, say, Georgia. But still, that's how I've been pegging your remarks.)

Your decision to all-but-endorse Bush is, to me, mind-boggling, but I don't question your party affiliation. Just your party loyalty, which only really works if you're a partisan Democrat like me. ;) )

I don't think of myself as a Southern Democrat at all. I've never even been to the South, and have never been directly influenced by the culture of that region. And I certainly don't admire the history of the Southern Democrats at all.

I think of myself as a Roosevelt/Truman Democrat. But these days there aren't too many of them left. And so I may, in the end, have to settle for Independent.

That's really weird, because I totally think of myself as a Truman Democrat too, and yet I disagree with you on a majority of the issues you bring up. Guess that's why he was always a divisive president, eh? ;)

Go ahead and give us Democrats hell, whether you're Southern or not, Michael.

And I wouldn't be too hard on the Southern Democrat history, at least recent history (the guys I named); there's a lot of those guys left. Zell Miller's a perfect example of one.

I don't know what planet the accuser comes from, but clearly he's beyond Mars.

As a conservative republican, I suspect that my views regarding domestic policy would differ significantly from yours. That's fine; that's what politics (and this country) are all about. In fact, I suspect that we are very far apart when it comes to domestic policy.

Yet...you have my respect, and I mean that in a very sincere sense. This country is at war with a very real danger - and I thank you for articulating it over these past months.

I am predisposed to voting for George Bush in 2004. Personally, as a conservative, I can find fault with a number of his domestic policies. However, I think this administration takes the threat of Islamic terror VERY seriously. I don't get the sense any of the contenders for the Democratic nomination do. They'd rather talk about this or that benefit for this or that domestic constituency. This I cannot accept. I will go head to head with anyone regarding the appropriate level of taxes, spending and influence the federal government should have on this country. However, the real issue at hand is security. I think you and a number of other liberals get this. For this issue, I don't care about red and blue states - I care about defending this country, and I will gladly join hands with anyone who believes this is a nation and an ideal worth defending. We can enjoy the luxury of arguing about domestic policy when we ensure that our children don't have to worry about random death. (I have a 10 year old daughter who constantly talks about death and airplanes because of 9/11. I cannot tell you just HOW pissed off I am at those sons-of-bitches - and yes, Saudi Arabia is firmly in my cross-hairs and will be for quite some time).

You have my thanks for providing a sincere and coherent response from the left since 9/11. I look forward to the day when we can argue heatedly about domestic policy - because our safety is secure from radical Islamic terrorists.

It's funny because I've long viewed myself as a Truman Democrat, with the understanding that no political boss ever won my personal loyalty. I also always understood that Truman was always a Southern Democrat, he was just the first one after the Civil War to make a rational decision on matters of race. He was certainly not the last. What Michael decries are the Boll Weevils, the Dixiecrats of ancient tarnished memory.

The guy who questioned your existence and accused your blog of being a front ("Scott") spent most of his comment space quoting in full a spin piece sent to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution by the former chairman of the Georgia Democratic Party that basically smeared and disowned Zell Miller. I suspect "Scott" is the kind of partisan activist who's never met an independent-thinking Democrat, only predictable members of various constituencies of the kind picked to create focus groups for political consultants, the very hacks who have turned the Democratic primary into the sad farce it has become. Those guys need to spend more time listening to a wider variety of uncontrolled opinion instead of focus groups, pollster samples, and predictable media.

I'm an ex-Dem who's never voted for a Republican presidential candidate except for John Anderson when he ran as an independent in 1980. I'm at a loss whom to vote for this time around.

I'm a conservative - not a Republican - and I put it this way because I approach politics with a certain set of, conservative, ideals. It is true that I usually vote Republican (occasionally Libertarian) but that's because the candidate's positions most closely match mine. My party affiliation, such as it is, is tenuous - constantly being evaluated and subject to my assessment of the match between what I believe and what the party advocates.

I see MJT as operating in a similar way, albeit from the Liberal side of the ledger. And that's why I visit this blog every day - I can count on finding good information, reasonably and rationally argued positions, and proper facts to back it all up.

Keep up the good work - real or not!

I've noticed that the left-leaning criticism you get is along the lines of "he's carrying Bush's water" or "he's not a real liberal", and now they even question if you are real period.

What it boils down to is that they want you to shut up. However, much to their dismay, they can't shout you down on the internet. Not like the good old days on campus. Frank J of IMAO could make this a perfect Filthy Lie. The ones about Glenn Reynolds putting puppies in a blender, Andrew Sullivan being a closet heterosexual (only pretending to be gay to get women), and the Vodka Pundit being a teatotaler were all hillarious, and I imagine we'd all get a chuckle over him making one about Michael Totten being an agent of the VRWC would be quite amusing to say the least, plus it would be a filthy lie after all :)

I remember learning that Hayek and Keynes were personal friends who argued Economic policy on Cambridge rooftops as air raid wardens during WWII.

I find ideological purity a philosophy for sheep and this applies equally to the right and left as well as moderates who decide to follow a checklist of positions without really thinking about them.

I have a friend who is gay, socialist, and a Christian fundamentalist, which is probably one of the most interesting mixes to make, plus he favors stateless socialism, though to me socialism puts a heavy emphasis on the state, unless he is referring to a collective socialism practiced by a small voluntary group (like Jesuits).

Keep up the Good work, Michael, and Indymedia may honor you with a deck of cards for their least favorite bloggers.
