I found his apology quite equivocal and weak on my points. It was good that he apologized so firmly for the crack about Jewish executives "who worship money above all else". It was also good that he actually did try to apologize as opposed to chalking it all up to misinterpretation or to people being overly sensitive, as I thought he might.

However, I was disappointed that he failed to address many of the points raised by those who were outraged by the remarks. He did not explain why, of all the countless people involved in the production and distribution of the film, he found only the ethicity of two Jewish executives to be relevant. He did not explain how his idea that the Holocaust somehow means that Jews should be held to a higher moral standard than others is not in and of itself anti-Semitic, or is not blaming the victim. He did not address the point that he seems to be holding Jews to a higher moral standard than others at all. Most importantly, he did not address at all the point that many have made that he is conflating being ethnically Jewish with practicing the Jewish religion. He defended himself by saying he has attacked Mel Gibson in the past for glorifying violence on film while professing to be a Christian. However, Mel Gibson is an avowed, practicing Catholic. Does he know if Harvey Weinsten and Michael Eisner are religious at all? Or does he just assume that they are because they have Jewish sounding family names?

The timing of the apology was also interesting. Many have remarked that it was quite slow by blog standards. I wonder if he was only moved to post the apology late last night because he was contacted by the New York Times.

I also wonder if those who have defended Easterbrook so vociferously and unequivocally these last few days will now apologize for so readily defending a statement that even the author acknowledges sounds anti-Semitic, and for defending it in such unyielding terms which even the author of the statement has not used to defend it. I especially am interested in whether or not Tom Perry will reconsider his statement that it was just an example of how you can put the word Jew into a sentence without causing a bunch of pantywaists to freak out. (Or words to that effect). Easterbrook at least seems to realize ther's a hell of a lot more to it than that.

The apology sounded very sincere to me. No waffling, no beating around the bush.

Now I can only hope Mr. Easterbrook is doing a little soul searching - and an evaluation of his positions - to find out why he said what he did in the first place.

Heads up : the Tuesday Morning Quarterback is no more. Easterbrook has been fired from ESPN, according to Roger L. Simon. He will no longer write his weekly column for Page 2.

I do find his mistake and apology to be sincere.

His apology was sincere (it agreed with MY analysis -- he was hog wild anti-violence in movies.)

If ESPN fired him because of his "Jewish" remarks, it might well be a little more justified than Rush (though Rush maybe knew the drug bust was coming, so fighting would be losing, anyway). If Eisner fired him for such personal, named insults, that's totally, completely fine.

Nobody in the real world of voluntary contracts and mutual respect should expect to get paid for criticizing the owner. Even if (especially) it's a mistake.

I am troubled, Michael, with how quickly you and others have jumped on Easterbrook's comments.

I have read the column, and it is clear to me that he was making a rhetorical point, that Eisner and Weinstein should know better, considering their background. I could see Michael Medved and Joe Lieberman making a similar point.

His one mistake was in his "Jewish executives worshipping money" line, which, if taken out of context, looks like the old money-grubbing canard that has been thrown at Jews. He should have chosen better words, but they do not amount to anti-Semitism, certainly not in their intent.

If Easterbrook has made other statements in the past that smack of anti-Semitism, then the response have been warranted. That doesn't seem to be the case.

I think that part of the problem is that members of an particular ethnic group are being lectured about their history by an outsider. Furthermore, he isn't in "the business," so he is an intruder.

The response to this is understandable, but unfortunate.

If one wants to see real, hard anti-Semitism, check out the statements of the prime minister of Malaysia. And if you want to see soft anti-Semitism, see Jacques Chirac's actions regarding the European Union's response to those statements.

He wasn't fired for remarks that could be seen as weakly antisemitic. He was fired because he criticized his boss's boss's boss. This is a function of media consolidation, and if the Right really cared about Esterbrook (rather than about using him to score political points) they'd start talking about it.
