The New Digs

Welcome to the new site.

As you can see, I now have a Comments section so you can flail me in public instead of only by email.

The site is brand-new so let me know if you see any kinks that need to be ironed out.

I spent all evening building this sucker so I don't have time for any new postings just yet. But I transferred the past few days worth of posts from the old site in case you missed them.

I know it's annoying, but you'll need to reset your bookmarks and blog links. Sorry about that. But hey, the Web address is easier to remember now. It's just michaeltotten.com. (I did not include my middle initial. Just my first and last name.)

Regular posting will resume as soon as possible.

Thanks, everyone, for reading. Cheers.

(Who's going to be the first to leave a comment? Come on, folks. Don't start me off with a troll here...)

What, is there some kind of prize for being first?

Welcome to Movable Type. Importing archives from blogspot recommended as soon as you're able. Step 2 is tweaking the template.

Takes a bit to get comfortable, but next time Blogspot goes down, you'll be glad you did.

Praise from Matthew Yglesias and a move off Blogspot, all in one day. Wonders will never cease :-)

Posted by: Matthew at July 29, 2003 02:30 AM

I've been lurking for a while, might as well make history by commenting early.

I know that blog housekeeping details can be sooooo boring, but after you've been at MT for a while, if you could gather up in one post all your advice for people planning to switch from Blogspot, I for one would find it helpful. Meanwhile, good luck with it.

Nice new digs Michael. It's always interesting to have comments. Good luck for the future.

I'll be the fifth wheel: congrats on the move!

Posted by: Gary Farber at July 29, 2003 03:39 AM

Good move, Mr. Totten!

Posted by: Gideon Strauss at July 29, 2003 04:42 AM

I can't read the new format. It looks like it's supposed to be two columns wide, but one of the two columns overlays the other, so half the posts are unreadable.

Posted by: Bruce H. at July 29, 2003 05:01 AM

Congrats on the move!

Posted by: Alex Knapp at July 29, 2003 05:35 AM

Sweet merciful crap, what the hell are you people doing up this early?!!!

Oh, yeah. Congrats with the move, Michael. I propose this thread be dedicated to amusing moving anecdotes. I'll start:

Moving tip #1: Whatever you do, do not seal away your utility knife in the last box you pack. Unless you've got really sharp teeth.

Good luck with the new site. It looks good--and readable!

(Yes, I'm up early too, but I never sleep. Glad to see you've enabled comments. I hope it doesn't stop you from leaving some on mine. So far I haven't had to block anybody's IP--though I've come close once or twice. Hope you have similar results; but if you don't, I'll lend you The Schoolmistress for a day...

Michael...welcome to modern blogging!

You'll never regret the move. Enjoy MT and grats. :)

Posted by: Court at July 29, 2003 06:47 AM

Looks good. Is it going to stay as a two column page? The look of the 3 columns is a little more eye catching. Just a suggestion.

Posted by: Kris Lofgren at July 29, 2003 07:24 AM

Congratulations on the move, Michael. Good luck with the comments ;)

Nice new house. A much better neighborhood :-)

Nice new look. Comments section is a great idea.

Posted by: Gabriel Gonzalez at July 29, 2003 08:52 AM

Congrats on the successful switch. You'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner! Cheers!

Posted by: moira at July 29, 2003 09:12 AM

Guess you have to wake up pretty early in the morning to be first around here... Or just be in a convenient time zone.

Congrats on the move. Keep up the good work.

Posted by: ken at July 29, 2003 09:17 AM

This is good. I've always wanted to be able to post comments here.

Posted by: Brandon at July 29, 2003 09:26 AM

Welcome to the dark side, dude.

Bwahahahahahaha!!!

Posted by: grs at July 29, 2003 09:31 AM

Congrats on the move! Looks great!

Having a comment section is terrific. I really do prefer the style of the old site, however, with its headings in Times New Roman boldface and a list of reviews on the right side. It was clear & simple as opposed to 'fancy'.

Posted by: jase at July 29, 2003 10:45 AM

Unfortunately, just disagreeing with someone usually isn't enough to warrant a flailing -- you have to jump the bar and get to idiotarianism, and I haven't seen you do that (yet). I'll just keep disagreeing on my blog and linking.

Posted by: Phelps at July 29, 2003 11:42 AM

Nice new digs, Mr. Totten.

Posted by: Rhesa at July 29, 2003 12:02 PM

columns? Ok, I guess I see columns. Hmmm.. I've an impressive amount of ignorance here. I guess I ignore the left hand links so completely it doesn't qualify as a columm in my mind. Well done. I started messing with a like project a month ago and bogged down completely. But whaddya expect from a schmo who doesn't recognize a column?

Posted by: dloye at July 29, 2003 12:35 PM

Hey, your article about rewarding the Pal's for their terrorist behavior is spot on. An interesting jump of logic from what you wrote- if President Bush means what he says (so far, everything indicates that he does), then the current Roadmap is really nothing more than giving the Pals enough rope to hang themselves so that the US can justify expanding the war on terror into this area as well. And I think that we should.

Welcome to your own site, Mike. Now, I can leave comments to one of my favoirte bloggers on a regular basis. And thanks for considering me part of the new mainstream.

Mr. Totten,

Glenn Reynolds is 6'3". How tall are you?

Posted by: grs at July 30, 2003 06:20 PM

I am 6'0". Why ask?

Posted by: Michael J. Totten at July 30, 2003 08:17 PM

Mike, I see you moved to Movable Type. Good idea, its a beauty. The comments section is a big plus
