Beirut, Lebanon, is still the poster child for urban disaster areas in some parts of the world.

A comparison of the Weston Road and Dimbles Lane area in which Mr Eccles lived and died to 'Beirut' was described as 'the last thing the area needs' by Mr Bayliss

The "war shattered Holiday Inn" reminds me of the signature scene from "Waltzing with Bashir"... rest of the pics are great... I didn't see that post when you made it, thanks for linking it! A condo with a view like that would probably cost a couple million in the US... not cheap, but doable MJT :)

For a nice restaurant with a great view, I'd recommend Casablanca overlooking the Corniche. All of the pubs and restaurants on Gemayze, and at the ABC mall are probably worth a visit.
A great way to improve Beirut (and Lebanon's) image would be to import more wines from the area. They're very hard to find in the states.
